Chapter 450 - 379 Bursting
Chapter 450: Chapter 379 Bursting
From the cliff downward, traversing through a deep redwood forest for an unknown duration, and breaching the throng of clawing undead, they finally reached their destination.
This was a building assembled with a sense of aesthetics for light and space; looking up, one could sense its desolation.
In the dimly lit space, a fortress burdened with a mission of resistance stood, where countless had perished, staining it with the hues of tragedy.
The fortress gate was tightly shut.
William stepped forward and pushed, then turned to Lind, shaking his head, "Lord, it won’t open."
When a Hero Rank Great Knight said it couldn’t be opened, it meant violence was ineffective.
The Undead couldn’t help but exclaim, "No way, what kind of stupid setting is this!"
Another door that couldn’t be opened from this side; bless you when you need to use the toilet and find out you can’t open it from this side and must climb through the window to enter the bathroom, then "open a shortcut."
"I will chop down this door!" The hot-tempered Undead, not believing in curses, was already taking action.
As expected, they couldn’t budge the door.
The ancient, decaying scent-filled fortress gate itself represented the will of the fortress, where nothing could escape once the door was closed.
Lind remembered what the Crystal Mage had said; during the construction of the fortress, they used a certain inherited method that would prevent the building from being destroyed.
Just like the Great Hall of Leon City in the past, and now Star Dragon City, Epic battles also couldn’t destroy those walls.
Bricks and mud alone are certainly not enough to stop the Abyss; what specifically was used, the Crystal Mage only mentioned that it was related to the Abyss.
Only the power of the Abyss can resist the Abyss.
The fortress used a stone material akin to granite; the high walls, under the dim light, emitted a faint gray glow, like bone flowers blooming close to hell. The surrounding defences, with in-wall small towers that had already ceased operation—if not, Lind’s strike team would have certainly faced a barrage of arrows upon approach.
The Undead tried scaling the walls, but the fortress had anticipated this as well; appearing along with the "cannot be opened from this side" was the "cannot be scaled."
Whether climbing or leaping directly, both would be obstructed.
"Damn air wall setting!" They always found some ways to convince themselves.
Previously, they had scaled high walls of Goliath, so they didn’t believe this wall was unscalable, they just blamed the air wall.
To the east of the fortress was a building, gripping the undulating mountains like a wild beast; if one could climb the mountain to get over the city wall, perhaps they could get in.
"Lord, we want to check that place out!" The Undead actively sought out Lind.
"Go ahead, find a way to open the fortress gates." Lind nodded.
He even generously assigned an oral task, allowing an extra day of frontline exploration as a resistance medicine reward for opening the fortress gate, prompting the Undead to probe more.
Everyone has main missions that must be done, and if they could bag some side quests along the way, no one would refuse; this was the kind of incidental gains everyone loved doing.
The elite Undead were all players with excellent gear and combat awareness; they conscientiously split into small teams, forming groups of three or pairs.
Moving en masse would make them too conspicuous, and the most critical point was that resources would be harder to distribute, with the fast hands getting and the slow hands missing out; among dozens of hands, there would always be the slower ones.
Only William was left baffled.
Exploring the frontlines of the Abyss is very dangerous, like Griffin Fortress which frankly refused to send soldiers, but Lind’s method of "giving you an opportunity to meet your demise" was still a revelation to William.
The cheerful manner of the Undead’s movements let him know that they truly appreciated Lind’s promised "reward."
"Lord?" William looked to Lind.
"Stay here, trust the Undead."
Lind casually commented, then sat down on the ground and opened the official website.
The grueling exploration and scavenging tasks were left to the Undead; they enjoyed doing this and instead of that, why not surf the internet?
He wanted to see how far the exploration of the Great Rift in other regions had progressed.
Seeing Lind seemingly lost in thought, William also dutifully stood by, guarding with his sword at the ready, as delaying the general’s affairs might impact the overall progress of the campaign.
Lind: "This outfit is quite interesting, but it demands a bit from one’s figure; only Doris could pull it off. This set suits Lania, but still lacks something, the Queen’s disdain shouldn’t look like this, it seems to let the Undead have more fashion items they like, some new appearances need to be sold."
The Duke Lind, controlling nearly all domestic production and manufacturing, creating new clothes could spur Undead consumption and increase employment.
Win-win!
...
War, death, fear, like an endless lament swirling over the skies of Calamity Executioner Fortress, interwoven into a saga destined to be tragically heroic, as though a holy spear from the chronicles pierced and pinned it to this land.
And now, with hearts filled with heroic resolve, the Undead had lifted the curtain.
"This world is too realistic, often making it hard for me to tell if it is reality or a game," the Black Tortoise Shield turned and looked at Lind, who was deep in thought by a distant campfire.
The man was likely worried about the Abyss again.
The deeper the involvement, the more he felt as if he weren’t playing a game but traveling to another world in his sleep, like in "Avatar," where he connected neurologically and entered another body in Another World.
"Found the path, hurry, come here!"
Black Tortoise Shield immediately snapped back to attention, "They’re here!"
They climbed up the mountain and discovered a section of the wall had been smashed open by some force, creating a hole that led directly onto the wall itself.
Standing on the wall, they looked down at the vista before them, the towering walls of the fortress soaring into the sky, giving them a commanding view that felt both empowering and dominant.
Below were several figures in armor wandering around, but they were so far away they seemed like ants, their names not even displaying in red.
Further away, it was completely out of sight; it was unclear whether they were playing dead to lure the Undead closer or simply hadn’t "refreshed".
Looking into the distance, they could only see a part of the fortress.
A large area of housing seemed to be the residence of the Catastrophe Executioner; beyond that was an intricate network of countless pathways and bridges making the whole fortress complex and easy to get lost in.
Half of the fortress area had been overtaken by a dark river, and beyond the river, another taller wall blocked their view.
As a fortress "resisting" the Abyss, it made sense that the walls got higher the closer one got to the Abyss.
The Undead were thankful they had approached from the rear; otherwise, they definitely would not have been able to enter the fortress.
The Undead didn’t have much time to marvel; their only way forward was from the ramparts, and jumping down would surely kill them, especially with the dense enemy numbers below making them wonder if they had entered a biohazard situation.
They had to proceed by leaping from rooftop to rooftop, then jumping down at a spot where the enemies were fewer.
Fighting alongside old friends in the game gave them a sense of battling side by side on the battlefield.
Black Tortoise Shield, with a heavy shield in his right hand and a spear in his left, primarily provided defense for his teammates, but that didn’t mean he lacked offensive capabilities. After blocking an enemy attack with his shield, a quick poke to the edge with his spear made the fanciest attacks useless.
He encountered the first wave of enemies on the rooftop.
[Wandering Abyss Plague Zombie, lv10]
[Health: 50/50]
The level was not low, but the health points were quite low, almost the same as the zombies outside, despite the big level difference.
Black Tortoise Shield instinctively charged forward, knocking several plague zombies back with his shield, then quickly stabbed, piercing three plague zombies’ heads with a triple poke.
If he had the Dragon Scale Sword, he could have taken them all out in one move, but that guy was still busy handling other enemies.
The remaining two plague zombies suddenly had their chests swell.
"Vomit" came a very clear vomiting sound.
Other Undead saw clearly as the plague zombies started spewing out a black, viscous liquid from their mouths, which seemed to consciously wrap around the plague zombies’ bodies.
In an instant, they turned into a bizarre, viscous blob, with only the thin legs of the plague zombies supporting on the rooftop tiles.
[Wandering Abyss Plague Zombie, lv10]
[Health: 1050/1050]
"Damn it!"
The difference was too great; the level remained the same, but the health points drastically increased.
Black Tortoise Shield shouldered his shield, feeling as though a wild bull had charged into him. Although he successfully blocked the hit, his body was still pushed several steps back.
"My posture bar is full!"
The game definitely had many hidden attributes regarding Undead, such as "Toughness," which made you stand more firmly when hit and a "Posture Bar," which could be overwhelmed, among other things. These were all summarized by the Undead themselves.
Of course, there were also vulnerabilities about enemies, such as humanoid monsters that had clear weak points: aiming for the head usually triggered an "instant death" effect.
For non-humanoid monsters, if they were large, one could aim to cripple them by attacking under the groin, damaging the joints.
And they had one common weakness: weak against fire.
Dragon Scale Sword rushed over, his sword shimmering with splendid color and a layer of frost blowing over the blade as he charged forward, his arms already swinging in a sword strike.
The bodies of the two exploding pus-filled plague zombies wrapped in a layer of frost and ice particles, their speed was forced to slow down.
Dragon Scale Sword turned back, his other hand stabbing a short blade into the body of a plague zombie at close range, with hot smoke billowing from the wound.
Withdraw the blade, then stab again.
Repeatedly stabbing in rapid succession.
The plague zombies chased with their cumbersome bodies, but Dragon Scale Sword dodged as if his evasion was maxed out, his body twisting and leaping like a dance, easily avoiding several attacks, his fire-ice dual blade repeatedly leaving wounds on their bodies.
When Moon Slash Blade also joined the battle, the tide finally turned.
Two plague zombies collapsed on the ground.
The air was still swirling with sparks and ice particles.
But the pus on the bodies of the plague zombies had vanished.
"We need to be careful, it seems everything here can burst and then all attributes supercharge, let’s try to finish them off as quickly as possible!"
