Chapter 418: Chapter 351: Fairy of the Lake

Having left the completely abandoned arena, the journey to the lake did not take too long.

The military headed towards the fishing village, and in the tail end of the sweltering summer, traveling in heavy armor was extremely unpleasant.

As they drew near the lake, the wind blowing in their faces provided some relief; merely gazing at their own reflections in the water seemed to cool their spirits.

The accompanying wizard was using magic to help erase their tracks, they had to be as silent and unnoticeable as possible, though that was nearly impossible.

The Undead were still stubbornly holding onto their chocolate Wives, during the journey they had received numerous contacts, especially those who chose to travel alone to Black Island were constantly complaining.

"Knight of Dependency, you’ve caught us again! Clearly, the army hasn’t arrived here yet, the plot hasn’t unfolded."

"It’s absolutely impenetrable, I suspect it’s an invisible wall made specifically by the game developers, if so, the setting is too epic."

"Other games prevent passage with clearly divisive invisible walls, this game seeks realism, simply by making us unable to win or kill our way through."

If it were an invisible wall the Undead might actually settle down and wait for the "plot to unfold", but being unable to breach the enemy’s firepower is different, especially when they found they could fight back.

I’ll just advance and kill before the plot starts, that’s what makes it fun.

Thus, Black Island was forced into a protracted defensive battle, and what made it worse was they were struck with splitting headaches without even catching a glimpse of the Rand Legion.

...

The legion continued on, advancing along the lakeside path, finally catching sight of the village, though there were fishing nets hung from every household, there were no boats.

It was only when a soldier told the Crimson Knight that the villagers here might not be human.

"We are the Rand Legion!" the Crimson Knight bellowed, his voice scraping across the ground.

Doors of the houses were pushed open, something emerged.

These were fish people, their bodies covered in scales, stains, and moss, their clothes sticky and damp, and worst was the foul smell detectable even without getting close.

Little fish people hid behind the bigger ones, gazing fearfully at the Rand Legion in their golden armor.

When the Crimson Knight faced the fish people, covered with scales and muttered "monsters", he nearly couldn’t restrain himself from crushing them with a punch.

Could there be anything more monstrous than these creatures?

He instinctively felt something was off, normal people might mutate from drinking Magic Potion, but it definitely wouldn’t turn a whole village into a new species.

"You better start talking truth!" the Crimson Knight was certainly not a suitable leader, his character as a slaver had persisted until now.

But it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, in execution and management, no one could match the experience of the Crimson Knight.

The eldest of the fish people finally spoke, "Our village once dug mud from the river to make bricks, but we..."

The Crimson Knight’s palm hit his shield, the dull thud interrupting the fish person’s story.

"Making bricks, do you know who I am? Even three years ago, I never heard of a mud brick-making village here." the Crimson Knight feigned impatience.

He used this tactic when intimidating slaves, and it worked extremely well.

The Rand soldiers also raised their arms, drawing their weapons, ready to act on command, which would result in death here.

"We," the old fish person immediately corrected, "originally started making bricks, but it was hard to make money, even to feed ourselves was difficult, however by chance we found, in the belly of a fish from the lake, gold."

"There’s treasure beneath the lake." the Crimson Knight nodded, this matched his guess, otherwise there’d be no need for a village to cling to life by the lake.

He did not think his presence would reduce the surrounding crime incidents.

"Yes, we thought it was a blessing from the lake fairy, and then we hid this news and arranged for people to dive to the lakebed to retrieve treasures... but they claimed they heard strange sounds, the sounds that proclaimed themselves to be the lake fairy. Everyone loves the lake fairy, but one day a group of people were invited by the lake fairy. We did not feel joy, sir. We were terrified."

"Because you only love treasures," the Crimson Knight twisted his body, his towering huge figure, nearly fifteen feet tall, made any minor movement catch others’ attention.

The old fishman continued, "They disappeared, completely vanished into the lakebed, perhaps they indeed went to the fairyland where the lake fairy lives. We bless them, but life must go on, and we could only arrange for other people to dive. Yet, not long after, they too heard the lake fairy’s call."

The old fishman paused, "We dare not let people go to the lakebed anymore, but the lake fairy didn’t plan to let us go."

"You do not love the lake fairy," the Crimson Knight emphasized again as if making a final verdict.

He heard layers of self-glorifying language biased towards the fishmen, the true situation was clearly not the same as they described.

Was it really to retrieve treasures from the bottom of the lake, or was it to sacrifice a batch of "divers" to the lake fairy at the lakebed in exchange for the treasures?

After the apocalypse, gold and treasures became worthless, but the lake fairy might still use treasures to exchange for sacrifices.

The people before him did not wish to continue the trade, but they had no one to rely on before to breach the trade.

This was the most likely scenario.

Otherwise, these people would not have evolved with scales.

"Do you have a way to cross the lake to Black Island?" the Crimson Knight asked.

"Yes, we can carry you."

The Crimson Knight laughed out loud, not believing that a few small mudfish before him could carry him across the river.

"Sir, the lake fairy will come soon, very soon! Everyone of us has heard her voice. We will swear loyalty, we can give everything as a reward, treasures, all, please!"

The fishmen knelt down all at once.

The Crimson Knight nodded in agreement, he had to prioritize completing the Duke’s orders, yet he felt this group of fishmen were unreliable.

Night fell.

The Soldiers had already made their preparations to surround, even if just facing some potentially weak enemies, he still chose to use stones and other materials to build temporary defensive works.

Every Great Knight was a precious warrior, on this point, the Crimson Knight agreed with Lind’s views.

Everyone was accustomed to hard days, the difference being that the Crimson Knight had always been oblivious, so he did not know the abundance of Great Knights.

Lind was just stingy. For him, NPCs were a slow-growing resource, while Undead, those things grew much faster than leeks.

A massive black shadow crawled up from the shore.

Flames burst from the towering figure nearly fifteen feet high, the fire lizard looked down at the thing crawling up the shore, belching flames, gnawing off chunks of riverside rock with its scorching claws.

It was a monster, and what it spat out when it opened its mouth was not a tongue, but a beautiful woman with her upper body bare.

Upon seeing the Crimson Knight, the monster tried to draw attention with the woman, but what awaited it was the fierce pounce and biting of the fire lizard.

The tongue was brutally torn apart.

The Crimson Knight speared the "woman" who jumped up, emitting a strange soul-entrancing fragrance. The woman had no viscera or anything like that, just a solid lump of flesh that had grown human-like.

"It seems I can cross the river now," the Crimson Knight looked at the trembling black shadow.
