Chapter 366: Chapter 310: City of Gold
Lind sat cross-legged on the ground, his left hand holding a bowl that, to others, would probably be considered small, which contained piping hot meat soup. The steam rising from the soup became even more prominent after a shower had lowered the temperature.
In his right hand, he held a large piece of dry, hard bread.
Although he was not afraid of flames, that did not mean he could drink scalding hot soup without any expression.
He gently blew on the soup, took a sip from the edge, and then bit fiercely into the bread.
No one had the right to waste food, this was the apocalypse after all.
His teeth were like steel trap jaws, quickly chopping up the hard bread before swallowing it with a "gulping" sound as his cheeks puffed.
Every soldier skilled in combat had a good appetite, and the Great Knight was among the best. Strength didn’t appear out of nowhere.
Lind needed to eat a lot. Indeed, he could have taken a Magic Potion to replenish his energy, but he enjoyed the feeling of his mouth working.
It made him feel alive.
The rain outside had lessened somewhat.
The thick clouds were like a blanket spread overhead, the sky was gloomy, with only the occasional shaft of light piercing through the thinner parts of the clouds.
They couldn’t just camp and rest now; it was still afternoon and they could cover dozens more miles.
If the road ahead became smoother, they could make up for the time spent resting today.
The Riven Soldiers had finally caught up, the heavy rain had spared them, lagging twenty miles behind. However, the muddy roads made the journey difficult. But with this time, they could at least close the gap between them.
The years of disuse had left the gravel road like a giant, broken fishbone, the thoroughfare that used to ensure north-south passage was now just barrenness left untended.
They passed a Sun Church, but time had corroded it beyond recognition. The roof had long since scattered on the ground, and life-vigorous new mutant vines clung to the rafters like a spider web holding its prey.
The silhouettes of Dragon Knights on the door lintels and arches were fracturing and incomplete, but that was the only way to identify which church this had been.
The collapsed walls were overrun with sawtooth vine plants from the Vitaceae family.
Encountering a dilapidated church on the road back to Royal City from the border felt like witnessing the decline of a nation, a sight that made the soldiers uneasy.
They marched on into the night to camp. This area was seldom trodden by man, and a lot of the Undead finally received orders, happily setting out to scout, bringing back not only the destruction of their enemies but also crucial information.
But it wasn’t long before Lind heard rumors about himself.
They were all over the forums!
"Doris."
"My lord, I swear I didn’t spread the gossip about you and Miss Druids!" Doris stated, puffing out her chest, but her emphatic demeanor was hardly credible.
"I haven’t even asked you what’s going on yet."
"Ah?" Doris looked down in confusion.
She really hadn’t expected the Undead to take such an interest in Lord Lind’s love life. Indeed, she had let slip a few things that day, but she assured that it was only a bit, and most of it was true.
"My bitter love story with Lania and my romance with Tione—how come I don’t know about it?"
Lind himself didn’t realize that he and Lania shared so many unforgettable memories. There might be a chance for a love-hate relationship, but not between him and Lania.
The only possibility he could see for a union between him and Lania was if he lusted after her and she needed his strength to secure her kingdom.
His relationship with Tione was even more nonsensical. She was his fiancée, but that didn’t necessarily mean there was any affection between them.
Marriage required a lot of consideration, and love happened to be the least significant part of it.
The more people you had to consider, the more there was to think about.
Tione was just conveniently suitable.
As for Miss Druids.
He wanted to curse. It wasn’t exactly a stain on his romantic life, but it made him feel a bit nauseous, especially the thought of having accidentally shared a dish with her.
That woman was just like her mother.
Lind had not attended many balls, but he was sure he would never forget the sight he stumbled upon that day when he accidentally wandered into the wrong room upstairs.
Miss Druids was proficient with musical instruments, and a group of noble youths were practicing with her—it was an eye sore.
However, that woman’s mother was quite cunning, as she had preemptively claimed that Lind was infatuated with her daughter, which the nobles took as a joke since Miss Druids’s lack of charm was well-known to everyone.
But it was different for the common people; they firmly believed that Lind was enamored with Miss Druids, until the matter finally settled down when Lind got engaged to Tione.
Lind waved his hand, indicating that the questioning was over.
After all, Goliath was already within sight.
...
With its towering walls and solid barriers, many people could even recall classic battles from several decades earlier when Goliath was invaded by four armies but ultimately repelled them, or perhaps from even further back in time.
The longer the time, the more incredible the stories about it become.
Time has a way of draping every story with a cloak called ’epic’.
Before even approaching, Fireballs were already roaring in the sky, and catapults drew huge arcs aiming toward the army.
The numerous pits ahead showed that, even after three years, the defense system was still operational.
Goliath stood before them, its thick, towering walls not enough to conceal the high towers within, their spires piercing straight into the sky.
The unhealthy sunlight stretched the shadows of the walls.
Should anyone seek buildings of a similar style, Snake Catcher Fortress prior to becoming ruins might have had a higher degree of resemblance.
The gray stone walls were stacked into towering structures, with spire tips extending out from within the walls, glistening with gold and silver.
Even from a distance, every person visiting for the first time couldn’t help but feel intoxicated by the title ’City of Gold’.
The towering buildings were not ravaged by time; one could see figures moving along the walls, hurriedly organizing their forces.
Long before the Expedition Army had arrived, the enemy had already discovered their existence.
Lind shouted for the troops to halt their advance.
"Marcus, the Cavalry will take the vanguard," Lind announced.
This was the task Marcus had always undertaken; he lifted his own chin, taking pride in the responsibility.
"Reed, Leo, go take care of the siege equipment immediately! We can’t match the range of the Goliath Guardian Army. Have the Wizards who are proficient in magic cast spells, whatever magic, I want you to blow up those guys on the walls from this position."
The two immediately nodded in agreement.
"Undead, have them clear the debris around; I need to make sure there’s nothing messy when we are ready to attack."
"Lance! I remember there’s another road to Goliath."
"Yes, my lord, right by the encampment of the Second Legion."
"Then take some men and keep an eye on it! That place should be wide open to us by now."
Nearly the entire Second Legion had been sent to various locations following the Doomsday Riots, leaving at most the First Legion’s infantry and some of the Third Legion’s Cavalry in the Royal City; their numbers would not be substantial.
Lind issued one command after another, allowing no room for refusal.
This was essentially still a battle of vanguards, where the disparity in strength made the usual strategizing and formation often meaningless.
"Did you all get that?" he bellowed.
All the senior commanders bowed their heads in respect, "Yes, sir!"
"Then move out!"
He roared loudly, "For the return to the Golden Throne!"
