Chapter 251: Chapter 216 Scapegoat

They came with sufficient goodwill, but just now, under the obscurity of circumstances, something unexpected happened at either the Snake People Outpost or Snake Catcher Fortress.

Then, they were unfortunately saddled with a huge black pot.

This was not the time to contemplate who was orchestrating these events from behind the scenes.

Lind was not present, and Lance was serving as a guard alongside him, leaving Riff the only one able to mobilize and command the soldiers.

His position was adequate, and he was deeply trusted by the Lord.

"Surely there has been some misunderstanding," Riff did not wish to resort to violence immediately, as they stood within the Snake People Outpost, facing a group of Great Knights whose numbers surpassed their own.

A forced confrontation would inevitably lead to immense losses.

Being surrounded and killed would absolutely be the most suffocating way to die.

"Lord Lind has never intended for a conflict to occur, even if the opposing sides are at war, Nobles need to protect their peers from their own territories!" Riff, scrolling through the sparse information in his mind, used some hearsay to persuade the opposition.

"That’s for Nobles who possess a sense of honor, and there’s no need to show any goodwill towards your group of Deceivers!" This was the information Pang had received, which was very troublesome.

Perhaps prior to this, he had harbored some goodwill towards Riff and the others, but now, probably none at all.

"I wish to see Lord Lind first," Riff said in a low voice, "no matter what has happened."

"No matter what has happened?" Pang sneered, "Yes, no matter what has happened, that’s exactly what you are doing now!"

"You should at least explain what happened!"

"You attacked the fortress!" Pang exclaimed angrily, "You lured us here to station ourselves, then took a different route, circling around to attack the fortress! And I thought you were a man who liked to drink fiery liquor; you really should be drinking horse piss!"

"Damn it!" Riff wanted to retort, but Pang had already pounced on him.

Riff’s combat skills, honed by Lind’s training, were stronger than those of the average Great Knight, but Pang was also no ordinary opponent.

Raising his sword in a frantic defense, he managed to block the slashing attack, but it was merely a parry. The attack was as swift and fierce as a snake, biting towards Riff from a sinister angle.

As a representative of "Balance," Great Knights of Sun’s Testament were ordinary in all aspects, with neither weaknesses nor strengths, unlike the Snake Catchers.

Malicious, nimble, quick!

In a moment of delusion, Riff felt he was not fighting a man but facing a hissing venomous patterned rattlesnake, and his armor seemed unable to block the opponent’s fangs, threatening his life with every contact!

The cunningly aimed sword bypassed Riff’s hand holding his weapon, stabbing towards his armpit.

Such sinister methods of attack startled Riff into a cold sweat, his elbow rapidly pressing down, using the armor on his arm to forcibly deflect the snake-like probing sword.

Riff had the advantage in strength, but he had underestimated the sharpness of the snake’s fangs.

Upon contact, the armor corroded with poison, sizzling with Poisonous Smoke, and through the armor he could feel a burning pain.

Pang’s assault continued, but the attack of a poisonous snake often decided the outcome in an instant.

Exposed in front of a large predatory feline, the snake would have to face claws, teeth, and a fierce counterattack!

Could the delicate snake scales withstand it?

Riff did not want conflict, and he was very clear about not being able to hand over his weapons now, let alone surrender without a fight. The Snake Catcher Soldiers, already governed by anger, could lose control of their emotions at any moment. Without weapons, their lives were entirely beyond their control.

And there was the Lord!

Indeed, the Lord was mighty, but that did not mean he could handle ten Upper Rank Grand Knights and face an onslaught from dozens of Great Knights simultaneously.

Protecting the Lord took precedence over everything. If the Lord had the strength of Riff and the other Great Knights by his side, they would surely come out unscathed. Afterwards, whether it was negotiation or whatever means, they would have the initiative.

Thinking of Lind charging forward time after time, Riff felt flames about to burst from his body. He tried to guide them, then he prayed, which took but a short moment.

With both hands, he used the sword to fend off Pang’s poisonous fangs, causing the blade to start heating up.

Twisting his waist and propelling forward simultaneously, the blade had turned red-hot.

All Pang could rely on was agility. After his weapon had been fended off, he quickly adjusted. However, this time Pang did not attack, because he had already seen Riff raising the longsword high.

As the sword was lifted upwards, it emitted intense heat, distorting the air, and when he hacked it downward, the flames erupted.

The first thing his nose picked up was the scorched smell of hair.

Pang used his sword to block, but upon contact with the fiery longsword, his own blade snapped instantly. With his snake-like agility, Pang forcefully contorted his body to dodge Riff’s slash, as the surging flames caused his heart to pound violently.

Agility was his strength. Although his sword was broken, Pang still chose to attack actively. He was well aware that facing Riff’s continuous attacks, he could hardly parry. The man in front of him was like a wild bull, more precisely a lion gone mad, baring its claws and teeth.

Reversing the grip on his hilt, he used the solid brass round ball, weighted at the end of the Broken Sword’s hilt, as another weapon for attack.

With strikes from the hilt combined with his serpentine body posture, he launched another form of attack.

This time he succeeded, slamming the hilt into Riff’s head, blood spurting violently!

Riff’s back slammed onto the ground, tumbling backward and therefore losing his grip on the sword as it flew out of his hand.

Severe pain swept through Riff’s spirit, dizziness made it hard for him to stand, and the blood flowing from his forehead blurred the vision in one of his eyes. Squinting hard, he found he couldn’t adjust to seeing through blood nor stop the bleeding from his head; he could only squint with that one eye.

The pain bred not only fear but also anger.

As Pang’s attack clung to him like an intractable disease, and faced with the poisonous snake’s approach again, Riff, lying on the ground, could only raise his left hand.

"Clore’s Explosive Flame!"

Anger ignited the Explosive Flame, the flames roaring on behalf of Riff as Pang, facing it head-on, took in nearly the entire burst of the explosion, his upper body’s armor torn apart by the blast, flesh charred.

Ultimately, he was still a Great Knight. The Explosive Flame that could turn a normal human’s head into charred remains had only blasted Pang’s body away, much like Riff before, hitting the ground injured but not dead.

Riff stood up, the blood oozing from his head wound trickling into his mouth—a bloody taste that was both annoying and exhilarating. He admitted he was very much exhilarated now.

He could even understand now why the Lord always charged first.

There must be a sense of duty to choose to forge ahead for the sake of the land.

But there would also be a part that enjoyed battle, the challenge of defeating strong foes, experiencing a fight so tense one dare not breathe wrongly. Such feelings are captivating; all pain gets ignored, leaving only exhilaration.

Now, Riff was reveling in such intoxicating exhilaration.
