Chapter 222: Chapter 194: Magic Ring Shard

The ghost thrown into the well struggled, the agony and struggle of the soul needing no medium to be conveyed, resonating naturally.

"Sir?" Reed frowned unconsciously as he looked at the scenes below.

As living beings, anyone who witnessed such a scene would feel an uncontrollable instinctive disgust.

The sight wasn’t particularly horrifying, but the soul’s instinct was resisting the uncomfortable twisting and merging.

Another three ghosts were forced to jump into the well, but this time the effect wasn’t as good, the struggling and writhing ghosts didn’t jump back out, only bubbles gurgling and bursting sounds were heard before the well finally returned to silence.

A failed attempt seemed to have angered something here, as the howling and moaning wind appeared again, and ghosts began to flee uncontrollably.

Lind finally understood why after a while that irritating wind would blow, and why ghosts would run out; they weren’t attacking, but escaping.

Fortunately for them, the ghosts weren’t fleeing in their direction, otherwise the uncontrollable ghosts, yearning for the lives of the living, would inevitably have lunged at them.

"Sir, we should get out of here," Reed said, suppressing the nausea in his soul and avoiding looking at the well.

The moaning in the wind had stopped, and ghosts continued to be driven into the well.

"You know I won’t leave," Lind said. "Have you forgotten why we came here in the first place?"

Feeling the soreness in his body from prolonged fighting, Reed raised his sword, "Sir, I think charging in directly is not a good idea."

"You stay here," Lind said with a slight smile, "and follow my commands as bait."

The Lord’s figure disappeared from Reed’s sight.

In his eyes, the ability of a Rune Messenger to craft Mystic Rune weapons far exceeded that of an assassin, but it didn’t mean Lind hadn’t learned to use this power. Any skill, given the method and steps, he could master at a glance, and he did it even better than the Undead and Milan, achieving true "stealth," suppressing even the slightest sound.

Moving stealthily among a group of ghosts that cared only about the presence of the living and not sounds, Lind wasn’t entirely sure, but he could also adopt the logic of the Undead: best to succeed in stealth, and if it failed, kill everyone who saw him.

The stealth was very effective, Lind easily bypassed each ghost, searching for the master hidden in the tomb, the sinister force behind the experiments fusing souls to create something horrific.

As another fusion attempt failed, the whining howling wind sounded again, and Lind immediately pinpointed the direction of the wind.

It was a small tomb chamber with a gold coffin placed at an angle, within it was a gaunt figure with four arms, no lower body, as if fused with the gold coffin.

The four arms didn’t appear to come from the same person, even the fingers were wildly grown.

A ghost monster forcibly pieced together.

Holding the Banshee’s Horn and with flames, Lind charged, the cold dark chamber was filled with high heat the moment the attack was initiated. The smothered tomb chamber turned bright with fire in an instant, like power was accumulated at a peak then suddenly found an outlet, and burst through the narrow door of the tomb chamber that only allowed one person to pass, spewing out flames.

In the blast of flames, Lind immediately went for the figure in the coffin, who wasn’t very strong, but the revulsion from the soul made him reluctant to confront the figure.

The Banshee’s Horn struck like a small hammer on the head of the four-armed ghost, and the flames seemed to have had some effect. When the ghost’s head tilted from the blow, half of its head showed slight melting, and the ghostly eyes fell from their sockets.

The whistle of the wind howled again.

Pry hidden outside, Reed saw the bursting flames and heard the wind. Noticing that the ghosts seemed to be drawn by the sound, he gritted his teeth and stood up, "Hey, look here! Daddy’s over here!"

Raised Longsword and shouted like imitating some historical hero, but looking at his teeth-gritting, trembling state, one could hardly see any heroic grandeur.

Especially when hundreds of ghosts uniformly turned to look at him, under the pale green light, Reed felt a spasm.

As bait, Reed was successful. The ghosts completely lost control upon spotting a living person, including those knight ghosts carrying swords and dressed in armor.

It was a chaotic, primal chase.

Facing the first ghost that rushed forward, Reed quickly raised his sword and severed its head. Then, not bothering to see if the ghost was dead or alive, he turned and fled toward the back.

But ghosts don’t need legs to run, their chase was much faster than Reed relying on his legs.

Dragged along, Reed had to turn and strike back repeatedly.

His sword cleaved through the first, but immediately two more clung to his body, the bone-chilling cold struck him, stiffening his body, reminding him of Lance’s ever-chilling Ice Bow.

Rolling on the ground, the structure of the tomb seemed to have some rules. The ghosts could not pass through walls or ignore collisions with the ground, allowing Reed to barely break free and use his lifelong combat experience to kill two more ghosts.

Three more pounced...

The ghosts crowded together into the tomb’s passageway, hundreds of ghosts densely packed in the narrow passage, resembling a tidal wave of pale blue.

Lind pushed his knee against the chest of the four-armed ghost, continuously smashing the horn in his hand. The ghost in front of him was at best at the level of a high-ranking wizard, and it couldn’t move.

A wizard trapped and unable to move.

He had never encountered such an easy target to bully.

The head became mangled under the repeated strikes of the horn and finally burst open completely.

Even without a head, the body of the Ghost Wizard still managed to keep moving, its four arms flailing wildly in the air, trying to tear Lind’s body to shreds, but it only brought a slight chill and shiver from the soul.

Since smashing the head was useless, he might as well smash the entire ghost.

Lind also heard the noise outside; he quickened his hammering, losing any playful or investigative spirits.

Reed had an absolute rule: never treat the lives of his comrades as a joke.

Finally, he defeated the quad-arm Ghost Wizard. As he emerged from the tomb, he saw Reed engulfed in a swarm of ghosts, his face ashen and his armor severely scratched and damaged.

Reed quickly rushed forward, squeezing through to reach Reed and shield him with his body.

"Go over there!" he pulled Reed up, "Can you still move?"

The horn’s deterrent power was not low, yet when those armored ghost knights wielding swords approached, Reed still encountered some difficulties.

The weapon was too short, which made it difficult to counter the opponents’ sweeping slashes, and the constant stream of ghosts sneaking attacks repeatedly impeded Reed’s assaults.

"No problem!" Reed, exerting himself, took out another bottle of sword oil and applied it to his blotchy and deformed sword.

A normal sword in the "Clore’s Fury" would continually weaken as if being forged again and again, becoming increasingly fragile.

Weapons were consumables for them.

The two fought side by side, with Reed leading the charge to break through the encirclement.

Struggling mightily against the heavy encirclement of spectral monsters, they reached a well.

Wells had an inexplicable deterrent effect on ghosts.

"They dare not come over! Hahaha!" Reed laughed out loud sitting next to the well.

The encirclement suddenly diminished; he breathed a sigh of relief.

Only the sword-wielding ghost knights continued to advance unheedingly. Without the nuisance and numerical advantage, individual ghost knights posed no real threat in Reed’s eyes.

One-on-one sword fighting was Reed’s forte; he quickly lowered his posture to close the distance. There was no other way but to attack fiercely when facing a long-handle weapon with a short blade.

The "small hammer" struck the chest of a ghost knight, the sudden impact denting the armor, followed by a second blow that successfully smashed through its body.

When Reed had dealt with all the ghost knights, there were no more ghosts in sight, and hundreds of other ghosts had fled.

"It’s this thing," Reed looked at the well beside him.

It was emitting a ghostly blue light, and it seemed like there was something inside.

Going directly in was unwise; Reed did not want to merge with something and become some kind of spectral monster, nor could he stand his body and soul becoming viscid.

"Sir?" Reed sensed Reed’s hesitation. "Is there something inside?"

"I know who can help get it out."

The [Banshee’s Horn], bound with chains, was lowered into the surface of the well by Reed in a fishing manner, just touching the surface.

Whish~!

The figure of Ghost Selena appeared in the well.

She was first a bit dazed then very excited, "I can feel my soul boiling."

Soul boiling?

Reed had always thought this well was some kind of vile thing, forcibly merging souls into something entirely new, definitely not something benign.

"Don’t you feel uncomfortable?" he asked.

"No, of course not!" Selena rolled in the water, "It’s comfortable, I feel favored by magic!"

Reed frowned, leaned over the well, and gently touched the surface of the water. The moment his fingertips touched the water, he felt a clear surge of power flow into his body.

But unlike what Selena described, he did not feel his soul boiling, but rather his flesh and blood boiling, and the four crests on his chest seemed somewhat excited, speeding up significantly in their operation.

His body felt like it was suddenly in an enhanced state.

Even his understanding of power seemed to have risen momentarily.

This feeling was like—evolution!

Reed withdrew his hand, "What’s in there?"

"Wait!"

Selena dove deep into the well and after a while came up holding a sparkling, translucent shard.

Although it was less than one-fifth the size of a little fingernail, it emanated a dazzling brilliance that irresistibly drew the attention of both Reed and Selena.

There could be nothing more beautiful in the world.

"What is this?"

"My memory seems to have recovered a bit," Selena said, "This should be, a shard of the Magic Ring."
