Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Please help with the work

Zhao Dong and Sun Mei worked together, pouring the soy milk onto the filtering cloth.

With a gushing sound, the milky-white soy milk flowed through the filter cloth into the large basin below.

Zhao Dong, thinking of something, suddenly said, "Sun Mei, I’ve been thinking. Making three to four hundred pounds of tofu a day is truly exhausting. It’s manageable for a day or two, but no one can keep it up for long. So, I believe it’s time we hired some help."

Sun Mei asked, "Hire help?"

Zhao Dong nodded and elaborated, "Yes. I just did some calculations. If we increase the amount of tofu we sell in the afternoon, we could make one or two silver taels a day. Hiring help won’t cost much, and it would significantly reduce our workload. It’s a very good deal."

Hearing this, Sun Mei nodded approvingly. "That does sound good," she said. "But if we hire help, our tofu recipe might get out, and we wouldn’t be able to make as much profit."

Zhao Dong pondered for a moment. "You’re right," he said. "I had that concern as well. To avoid that, the helper we hire should ideally be one of our own, someone reliable."

"One of our own?"

Sun Mei began to think. Her father-in-law, related by blood, and his new wife’s family were definitely out of the question; it would be a blessing if they didn’t try to steal her tofu recipe. As for Mrs. Wang’s youngest son, Zhao Qiu, although he had always been on good terms with the eldest branch of the family and their second branch (Zhao Dong’s family), if he came to help, Mrs. Wang would undoubtedly force him to hand over the prescription. So, he wasn’t an option either. As for Elder Sister-in-law from the Zhu Clan, absolutely not; she couldn’t be considered under any circumstances. Therefore, after much deliberation, the only ’own people’ left were from her maternal family.

Sun Mei looked at Zhao Dong. "You’re not thinking of asking my family, are you..." she ventured.

"Haha, exactly!" Zhao Dong chuckled. "Sun Mei, you truly understand me."

He continued, smiling at his wife, "Look, your brothers are all good men; we definitely wouldn’t have to worry about the prescription being leaked. Also, we can’t just focus on making money for ourselves. We should bring your parents’ family in on it too. I’ve already thought it through: we’ll give them thirty percent of the shares. What do you think?"

"That’s not a bad idea," Sun Mei replied, intrigued. Moreover, her maternal family lived in Sun Village, not far from Zhao Village. It was just past the next village, and the walk there and back wouldn’t even take two quarters of an hour.

Zhao Dong continued, "The day after tomorrow, I need to go to the marketplace, and we’ll need to pick some lotus leaves. Coincidentally, Sun Village has a lotus pond. We can take some tofu to your parents then and discuss this matter with them."

Sun Mei thought it was a good plan and nodded in agreement. Then, she asked, puzzled, "Why do you need to pick lotus leaves?"

Zhao Dong paused, then a triumphant smile spread across his face. "Sun Mei, you see! And you claim to read so many novels. When I go to the marketplace, what am I going to use to wrap the tofu for customers? We have to use lotus leaves, of course."

In ancient times, dry food items were wrapped in oil paper or lotus leaves. Oil paper was relatively expensive and not cost-effective. Lotus leaves, however, were cheaper; one could buy three or four for a single coin, and one lotus leaf could wrap two pieces of tofu.

Sun Mei slapped her forehead in realization. "Ah, I forgot!" she laughed. "By the way, since you don’t read novels, how did you know that?"

"Hahaha, actually, I didn’t know either," Zhao Dong admitted. "Butcher Zhao told me. He often goes to the marketplace to sell meat..."

Inside the kitchen, the two chatted while busy with their tasks, not feeling tired at all.

The next day, early in the morning, after the villagers who sold tofu had collected their supply, Zhao Dong, Sun Mei, and Zhao Zhitong packed a large piece of tofu in steaming cloth. They also filled several bamboo tubes with bowls of tofu and prepared to head to Sun Village.

Sun Mei, shouldering a bamboo basket, noticed Zhao Zhitong hadn’t come out of her room yet. She stood in the courtyard and called out, "Tongtong, we’re leaving! What are you dawdling in there for?"

"Coming!" Zhao Zhitong shouted back. She then ran out of the room, carrying a small bamboo basket.

This basket had been woven for her by Zhao Dong. It was quite small, about the size of her head, just right for the young girl to carry.

Yesterday afternoon, after returning from school, she had heard from Zhao Dong that they would be visiting her maternal grandparents today. So, she had run to the roadside, picked some wildflowers, and decorated her little basket with them.

However, when she woke up this morning, the flowers had all wilted, which had upset her for quite some time.

Sun Mei locked the door of the main house, then walked over and took Zhao Zhitong’s hand. "What were you doing in the room?" she asked.

Zhao Zhitong was overjoyed. "I was preparing gifts for my cousins!" she exclaimed.

By this time, Zhao Dong had already pushed the cart out and was standing outside the gate, hurrying his wife and daughter in the courtyard.

"Hey, are you two ready yet? Let’s go, let’s go! We still need to pick lotus leaves."

"Coming, coming! It’s your precious daughter who’s been dawdling," Sun Mei replied. She then lifted Zhao Zhitong onto the cart, turned to lock the main gate, and the three of them set off towards Sun Village.

Zhao Zhitong sat on the cart, looking around excitedly the entire way.

The moment they reached the entrance of Sun Village, Zhao Zhitong could no longer sit still. "Daddy, let me down!" she clamored. "I can walk by myself."

Zhao Dong, having no other choice, stopped the cart. Sun Mei lifted Zhao Zhitong down, constantly reminding her to be careful and not to fall.

"I’m already in the middle class at preschool; I won’t fall!" Zhao Zhitong announced in a child-like voice, then scampered ahead with a HUFF and PUFF.

Sun Mei sighed. "You’re running so fast. Do you even know where your grandparents’ house is?"

Zhao Zhitong shouted back, "I know, I know! I have a very good memory!"

Sun Mei’s parents lived on this street, so both she and Zhao Dong felt at ease and let her run on her own.

Zhao Zhitong ran, looking left and right. Upon spotting a large Shi Tou in front of one family’s gate, she dashed straight towards it. As soon as she reached the entrance, she leaned against the door and shouted inside, "Grandfather, Grandmother, Tongtong is here to see you!"

Meanwhile, at her grandparents’ house, a drama that unfolded almost weekly was currently in progress.

At that moment, in the courtyard, Sun Kang’s beard quivered with anger. He pointed at his sons in the yard and yelled, "Every single one of you, why are you all so worthless? Alas! Is the skill of our old Sun Family to die out with me? How did I end up fathering such unfilial sons!"

The three sons of the Sun Family stood in the courtyard with their heads bowed, enduring their father’s scolding. When he finished, they turned to their own sons, who were playing nearby, and berated them, "You worthless boys! Why don’t you learn medicine properly from your grandfather? You’re all good-for-nothings!"

Sun Kang snorted. "Don’t scold your sons. It’s because you yourselves are incompetent that the children you’ve produced aren’t cut out for medicine. Either you quickly give me a grandchild with talent, or you force yourselves to find that talent and learn from me. Figure it out yourselves!"

The eldest son, Sun Youwei, looked up at the sky, pretending not to hear. "..."

The second son, Sun Youli, said honestly, "...Dad, I’m trying."

The youngest son, Sun Youcai, grinning cheekily, tried to change the subject. "...Wow, Dad, the weather’s great today, isn’t it, Brother?"
