Chapter 219: He Is Not Good

Chapter 219: He Is Not Good

Avery broke down at Evelyn’s question, tears streaming down her face. She stood up and hugged Evelyn tightly, her body shaking with sobs. She had been holding back until now, trying to be the courageous kid for her family, but she couldn’t hold it in any longer.

Everyone turned emotional as the best friends cried in each other’s arms. Gracia turned away and wiped her tears, holding William’s hand. Though he showed no expression, he seemed broken deep inside. Even after knowing Elias was not his son, he still treated the boy as if he were his own. He might not have been a good father to Evelyn, but she could tell Elias was very dear to him.

Rosalind, being comforted by Jonathan, watched with a heavy heart. In just a few months, Evelyn had become her favorite child. She adored and loved her a little more than her own kids, and seeing her broken into pieces again, her heart ached deeply.

Avery broke the hug and sat beside Evelyn on the bench. Zevian wrapped his arm around her, and Evelyn leaned on him, clinging to his hand tightly. Her teary eyes were fixed again on the timer screen, her heart beating loudly with each ticking second.

Damien took a bottle of water from Lucius and walked over to her. He handed it to Avery, who sniffled and looked up at him. "Do you have any tissues?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Damien took out a kerchief from his pocket and passed it to her. Avery took it and wiped her cheeks, trying to compose herself. Once she was done, Damien opened the bottle and handed it to her. Avery took a sip and clutched the bottle tightly along with the kerchief, still in her hand.

After what felt like an eternity of excruciating tension, the operation screen finally showed that the procedure was completed. Evelyn got up from the chair and moved closer to the doors, everyone else following her lead.

The main surgeon, Dr. Samantha, walked out. She looked at the group and sighed, the weight of her expression heavy on their hearts. Evelyn’s eyes searched for any glimmer of good news, but the doctor’s face gave nothing away.

"How is he?" Damien was the one to ask the tough question.

"Not good," Dr. Samantha shook her head. "Elias sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his chest. Although the bullets narrowly missed his heart and we managed to remove them surgically, they caused significant damage and severe blood loss."

The room fell silent as Dr. Samantha continued, explaining a few medical terms and how the lack of blood flow affected Elias’s brain. "We will have to watch him closely for a few more days." she ended.

Evelyn felt dizzy, the world beneath her slipping away, but Zevian’s strong hand held her firmly. She leaned into his support, holding onto his hand tightly as both tried to process the news.

William, with a trembling voice, asked, "When will he wake up?"

Dr. Samantha sighed, "It’s hard to say. With injuries of this severity, the recovery process can be very unpredictable. There is no way to determine exactly if he will regain consciousness. It could take days, weeks, or even longer. But we will monitor his condition closely and provide the best care possible."

William nodded and questioned, "Can we see him?"

"He will be in the ICU, but you can visit him for a few minutes. Please, don’t crowd the room and keep it to just two people at a time," Samantha replied, glancing at Evelyn. She had heard that Evelyn was pregnant and understood she might need someone with her.

When everyone nodded in agreement, Samantha gestured to her nurses to take care of the family and excused herself with her junior doctors.

Zevian looked at Evelyn and murmured, "Let’s get cleaned and visit him. You are covered in blood stains." Evelyn nodded, and he helped her out of the corridor.

"I will be with her. You can stay here," Rosalind told Gracia. When the latter nodded in gratitude, she quickly followed behind the couple. Theodore looked at Damien, and at his assuring nod, he followed his wife, leaving things in his care.

Avery tagged along with Lucius and Damien, who decided to take care of the hospital procedures. Ronan decided to report to his grandfather and also leave since there was nothing more he could do there. Evelyn had enough people to take care of her, and he would bring his grandparents once Elias woke up.

By the time Evelyn returned after taking a shower and eating a light meal that Rosalind had forced her to, Elias was already moved to the ICU ward. The nurse helped her put on the PPE to avoid contamination. Though Zevian had insisted on coming with her, she wanted to see Elias alone.

She walked closer, the nurse following behind her. Elias lay on the bed, his body covered in instruments, tubes running through his mouth. He was supported by the systems, his face pale and lifeless.

Tears that Evelyn had tried hard to hold back trickled out of her eyes. She turned around, covering her mouth, trying to suppress her sniffles, unable to look at him in such a miserable state.

The nurse quickly passed a few tissues, feeling bad for Evelyn. "Thank you." Evelyn took them and tried to control her tears. She took a deep breath and turned around to face him again.

Evelyn sat beside him on the stool, her hand holding the bed rail tightly. "Just when I was about to praise you for handling the interrogation so well, you had to pull that stunt, didn’t you?" she scolded Elias, her voice shaking as she tried to hold back her sobs.

Leaning closer, Evelyn gulped and continued, "Remember in 8th grade, you fell off your bicycle and broke your leg? I stayed beside you the entire time, scolding and annoying you until you could walk again." With a pout, she continued, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I’m gonna do the same thing, Eli. So you better wake up soon."
