Chapter 167: Spilling The Truth

[Next Day]

The day went in a blur, everyone waiting for Gracia to wake up soon. Evelyn hadn’t left the hospital and Zevian tried to convince but gave up understanding her feelings all too well. Rita had brought Kiana in the evening, whose excitement and positivity that her grandmother needed her beauty sleep and would wake up soon kept everyone a little relieved.

Kiana opened the energy drink Damien’s men had given her. Placing a straw in it, she first took a sip to check if it was good and hummed in approval. Turning to Evelyn, she lifted the bottle and demanded, "Mommy, drink this!"

Evelyn smiled and shook her head. "No, sweetie. I am good!" Passing back the bottle, she added, "You should drink it."

Kiana narrowed her eyes and with a huff, she got up, making sure she looked bigger than Evelyn. Placing a hand over her Mommy’s shoulder, the little girl added, "Are you going like this in front of grandma? She will be sad to see you so pale."

With a pout, Kiana continued, "She will blame me and stupid Daddy for not taking care of you well." Passing the bottle, she blinked innocently and added, "Please~"

Evelyn gave up at her cuteness and took the bottle. As she started drinking it, Kiana beamed with a grin, earning thumbs up from everyone around her. Sitting beside her Mommy on the bench, she danged her legs in the air and patiently waited for Granny to wake up.

"She is such an adorable kid!" Derek couldn’t help but compliment Kiana, recalling his bratty son who was almost the same age.

"Yeah!" Rita agreed with a smile, proud she was her best friend. Ever since their amusement park ride, they have bonded pretty well and Kiana told everyone that she was her best friend, even though they had a huge age difference and it made her happy.

Just then, Damien and Zevian walked back into the corridor. Ronan had decided to rest since he had sustained a few minor injuries too. Kiana jumped down the bench and ran to her father.

"Daddy!!!" Zevian picked her up in his arms with a smile.

"Look!" Kiana looked in Evelyn’s direction and whispered, "I made Mommy drink the juice."

Zevian’s smile widened and Damien smiled too, ruffling the little devil’s hair. "Good Job!" They both praised her together.

Evelyn noticed them and quickly got up, her heart anticipating some news about her mother. "What’s taking so long? Is she really out of danger?" she asked to Damien.

"She is fine, Evelyn." Damien pressed for the zillionth time today. Placing a hand on her arm, he added, "Her body is weak and needs lots of rest. She will wake in a couple of more hours. But..."

"But what?" Evelyn asked with a frown.

Damien looked at his friend who sighed and took a step forward, standing close to Evelyn. Damien retracted back, letting Zevian do the convincing job.

"We need to leave to Vespera." Zevian declared making both Evelyn and Kiana look at him in shock.

"No! We are not leaving without granny!" Kiana rebuked, throwing a glare at her father.

Zevian sighed and held Evelyn’s hand. Caressing the back of her hand with his thumb, he added, "Uncle Theodore may get in trouble if we stay for long. We have a court hearing soon and need to prepare for that too."

Evelyn pursed her lips, feeling torn apart. True, getting out of Annabelle’s case was important. And finding what happened to her was more important. They couldn’t ignore her just because she was dead now. If not for her entry into their lives, she could have never been able to find her mother again.

"Don’t worry. I will be here to watch out for her." Damien said in a serious tone. "And Ronan will stay over for a few days before returning to his base." He said since the guy had stayed longer than enough just for Evelyn.

Evelyn nodded understanding his point. Though she hoped for him to travel with them to Vespera for Annabelle, it would distance him from his grandfather. But she could fight it alone and bring justice to Annabelle to show gratitude for whatever he had done for her until now.

"We will leave once meeting him," Evelyn replied and looked at Zevian. He didn’t object to it and agreed with a nod.

Ronan wanted to mend up for not taking a stand for her in Annabelle’s case, not accepting the truth in front of William and he had done more than enough for her. Without his help, Damien could have taken more than a few weeks to get to this point and they needed to be grateful for his help.

"The flight is in a few hours," Damien murmured, looking at the time. "We can all have lunch together once."

Evelyn agreed with a small smile. She would anyhow invite him and Benjamin again once Gracia was back, to show her gratitude for their help but a little toast wouldn’t hurt now. After all, they had fought almost a war to bring Gracia back.

"Are we partying?" Kiana asked in confusion, trying to grasp the elders’ talk. When Damien nodded with a smile, she excitedly clapped her hands. "Yay! Let’s go! Let’s go!"

Everyone smiled at her infectious energy. Having a little chat with Jimmy and Derek, they all left back for the mansion.

[Vespera City]

The next few days passed very quickly for everyone. While Sophia was busy trying to find Annabelle, believing Evelyn’s lies, Lucius was trying to get the truth out of the maid, Brienna’s mouth. She kept claiming that it was Elias, he was the main culprit but something seemed off in her story.

Avery and Evelyn parked in front of Damien’s other secret dungeon that was located on the outskirts of the city, having been requested to come since the maid had confessed to spitting the truth finally. Rita walked them inside the hidden venue, transcending through a series of corridors they reached a room.

The guards opened the door and they walked inside to see Brienna tied to a chair, with a light bulb moving over her head. In front of her, Lucius sat with a grim expression, his legs folded casually as he leaned behind, having paused their interrogation.

"Boss!" Rita greeted him in a chirpy voice.

Lucius turned around and smiled at Rita, before nodding at the two women. Avery clung to Evelyn’s hand, feeling his gaze linger over for more than necessary. It seemed like his son Yael had already told her about her cupid skills and she just hoped he wouldn’t slice her neck for ever agreeing to Kiana’s request to find him a new love.

Lucius broke his gaze and turned around to Brienna. "She is here." He declared since she had requested to tell everything only in front of Evelyn.

Brianna looked up, her face pale and covered in bruises. Evelyn felt a pang of guilt since she had nothing more than a scapegoat for Sophia but it was Brienna’s fault too for being stubborn and testing everyone’s patience.

"Promise me that I won’t be killed," Brianna asked Evelyn, sharing her fear. She was delaying it, quite sure they would kill once she spilled the truth.

Evelyn crossed her arms, thinking about it for a while before she replied, "You will be submitted to the court."

Even Lucius was surprised by her decision but found it fair as she continued, "If you are truly innocent like you claim, then we will let the judge decide your fate."

Brienna found a new hope in her words. Yes, suffering in jail for the rest of the time was better than living with the guilt. It would eat her alive and never let her be in peace even if these devils sent her away to a faraway country to lead a new life.

Taking a deep breath, she started, "That night..."

Evelyn and Avery walked closer to her, while Lucius turned to his men. They quickly started the recording, keeping evidence in case the maid switched in the future.

"Annabelle, Elias, and Sophia were arguing about something." Brianna shivered, recalling the chilly details that were stuck in her mind like a nightmare. "Annabelle held a phone which the mother and son duo were trying to snatch away. She kept threatening to show it to William if Sophia didn’t fulfill her terms."

Evelyn tried to picture the scene, the grand stairs in the Wright mansion coming into her mind. But a frown tugged her lips, wondering what Annabelle had against Elias. If it was something related to just Sophia, he wouldn’t have reacted as much as he pretended to not like his mother after getting to know about her wicked games.

"They started to fight, it got worse that even I could hear it from the kitchen," Brienna added as she stayed behind to finish cleaning. "And when I walked out, I saw Elias pushing Annabelle away. She lost her balance and tripped, rolling down the stairs."

Evelyn couldn’t help but recall the same stunt Annabelle had played during the Wright Corporation party to bring her down. Her act had forced Viktor to break off their engagement. It was ironically sad that Annabelle died in the exact same way.

"So, that’s how she died," Avery murmured, concluding. And Elias to save himself, let his mother wash his brain and use Evelyn. It all made sense but Brienna shook her head.

"No, that’s not when she died." Her words made everyone frown. Taking a deep breath, she continued, "She could have been saved if she had been taken to the hospital immediately. If not for the baby in her womb, at least Annabelle could have been saved that night."
