Chapter 119: Kick Her Out
Chapter 119: Kick Her Out
Unlike William, Evelyn recognized the video in just the first frame. After all, it had been one of the best moments of her life with her Mama. It was also the very reason why AWE was started in the first place and why it was thriving so exceptionally well today.
"Grandma said she’s chasing her retirement dreams," little Evelyn curiously remarked, glancing up at her mother, who was engrossed in a live meeting with her team.
Gracia, being the head of the architectural team at Wright Constructions, was the boss feared by everyone including their CEO, William Blake. The word perfectionist doesn’t completely justify her personality. Every design, even for the smallest room, needed her stamp of approval. Tonight, her staff was working overtime, and grilled until she was satisfied with the results.
Gracia furrowed her brows, lovingly adjusting the bangs of her little bunny. "Are you talking about her long vacation, Evy?" she asked, gradually understanding what her daughter meant.
When Evelyn nodded, Gracia chuckled softly, the change in her expression relieving her workers too. Her mother-in-law, Charlotte Wright, had declared she was tired and had cleared her intention to retire from managing the household, setting off on a yearlong vacation. That was also the time Evelyn was kidnapped when Charlotte had left, and it eventually led to Gracia’s tragic death.
"Yes, what about it?" Gracia asked, turning her full attention to her daughter, and allowing her team to breathe for a moment. If anyone could soften Gracia’s iciness, it was Evelyn, her little princess. The workers even adored her for the brief respite she always provided, saving their lives from this demon boss from time to time.
"What are your dreams, Mama? I’ll help you fulfill them," Evelyn asked, her tiny face serious as she clutched a small secret diary, ready to note down her mother’s dreams so she wouldn’t forget once she grew up big.
The gesture warmed Gracia’s heart, a wide smile gracing her lips. She pondered for a moment, rubbing her chin theatrically while Evelyn waited patiently. The little bunny had seen how her Papa helped her grandmother plan her vacations, and she wanted to do something similar for her Mama when she grew up.
Finally, Gracia’s eyes lit up as a thought crossed her mind. "I want to build houses for the homeless," she said, looking at her daughter. "Once you take over my position in the future, I’ll be free to pursue that dream without being disturbed by these morons."
Her team members flinched at her words, though she said it with a touch of humor. It was also an indirect warning, to stop slacking off, and do better instead of getting on her nerves.
Evelyn blinked thoughtfully, considering how she could help her Mama with this dream. William had mentioned her Mama was the best architect in the world, and there was nothing she could not do.
"Okay!" she said enthusiastically, scribbling in her diary. "You build the houses, and I’ll turn them into homes."
Gracia’s eyes widened in amusement. "And how will you do that, my love?" she asked with a smile.
"I’ll decorate them nicely, like my room," Evelyn replied, ticking off her little fingers as if she had already figured out a detailed plan. "And I’ll fill them with lots of love, so everyone who lives inside them feels loved too. Love is what makes a house a home, right?"
Even the staff, watching the interaction, couldn’t help but smile. They were astonished at how this small child already understood the profound difference between a house and a home. It was clear that Evelyn had inherited her mother’s heart and brain, and she would take Wright Constructions to new heights one day.
"Yes, sweetie. You’re absolutely right," Gracia said softly, pulling Evelyn into a proud hug. "I’ll take you with me when the time comes so you can fill those homes with love and affection."
"Okay! I’ll go to bed now," Evelyn replied, closing her diary with a satisfied smile. She shared a tight hug and a kiss with her Mama before climbing off her lap.
"That’s us!" Kiana’s voice broke the surprise that filled the table. Pointing at the screen, she continued, "Mommy and I do the same every night." So, her grandmother had thought about this tradition, she thought with a bright smile.
While on the big screen, the video came to an end. That night, the meeting resumed, but the moment had been accidentally recorded on one of the staff member’s laptops. Later, they shared the video with Gracia, believing it was fate that had captured such a precious mother-daughter memory the previous night.
Elias had found this video in Evelyn’s old drive years ago, and Avery had made him work tirelessly to search for it so they could include it in tonight’s event. Thanks to him, they had pulled off the perfect surprise, one that would remind everyone of the heart and soul behind AWE. Avery just hoped William would understand Evelyn’s intentions too.
As the video ended, Avery stepped onto the stage, beaming with pride. "As you have just seen, AWE’s destiny was set long ago, and it’s been protected by a guardian angel in heaven for the past two decades," she said, glancing at the screen where Gracia had just appeared. "And no one could have stopped it from becoming what it is today."
Evelyn exhaled shakily, her emotions swirling. Her original goal had been to build a construction firm that focused solely on Gracia’s dream. But without significant investment, it would have never succeeded. Instead, she had started AWE as a stepping stone, since interior designing had been a growing buzz in their industry. It would help them build funds to create homes for the homeless eventually.
Avery knew all about her long-term plans, but they weren’t wealthy enough yet to launch the project—unless a big investor came along.
Suddenly, it dawned on Evelyn. She turned to Zevian, her eyes wide in disbelief. Could he be...?
Before she could ask, Avery’s words confirmed it. "AWE is proud to announce a partnership with Reign Consturctions to make this dream a reality. By next year, we plan to build homes for the needy across the country," Avery announced, beaming. "And now, I’d like to invite the President of Reign Corporations, Mr. Zevian Reign, and his hotshot wife, Grace, to join me on stage."
Zevian turned to Evelyn with a warm smile and extended his hand. "Shall we?" he asked gently.
Evelyn was too overwhelmed to speak, her heart filled with both gratitude and joy. But before she could stand, a sudden commotion erupted outside the hall.
"Kick her out!" a voice shouted angrily, followed by more yelling from the crowd.
"She killed her and now pretends to be kind. What a vile snake!"
Evelyn knew all too well that the accusations were aimed at her, they were here to dig dirt on her. The venom in their words wasn’t new; she had endured these malicious claims for far way too long. She had stayed silent, hoping time would bury their pain and anger for losing Gracia, but not anymore.
She had endured enough and it was time to show these accusers instigated by Sophia just where they belonged—beneath her feet.
