Chapter 39: The Song

"You don’t have to sing if you don’t feel like it," Erik said in a low voice.

"Don’t worry I’ll be okay." She smiled at him and two dimples appeared on her face.

The emcee requested everyone else to leave the stage before handing the phone to Aryana.

She borrowed the guitar from the band that sang earlier during dinner.

Julia sneered. ’Let us see if you can perform well without practice. Even famous singers do their rehearsals.’

"Do you think she can sing?"

"Well, I bet her voice is just average."

"Let us see if she can play that guitar well."

Aryana was standing in the middle of the stage when she started strumming the guitar. Then her soft angelic voice filled the air. Her voice was not powerful but rather it was melodious and very pleasing to the ears.

Julia gritted her teeth. ’Damn, how can her voice sounds so good.’ She looked around and she became green with envy when she noticed that everyone was entranced by her singing. She looked at the man sitting beside her and she clenched her fist when she noted that Erik’s gaze was on Aryana.

A hush filled the entire ballroom. Only Aryana’s voice and accompanying guitar broke the silence.

"Thank you, everyone. I hope I did not disappoint." Aryana bowed.

A thunderous applause filled the entire ballroom.

Erik stood and escorted Aryana back to her table.

"I didn’t know you have such a beautiful voice," Erik whispered to her ears.

Aryana did not say anything. She just smiled and then headed to the back where Elaine was.

"Aryana you were awesome. What other talents are you hiding? Tell me you are a regular in beauty pageants right?" Elaine was like a machine gun firing her with a barrage of questions.

"What nonsense are you sprouting?" She flicked Elaine’s forehead.

Her phone vibrated. It was a message from Amy reminding her to rest early because she has a photo shoot tomorrow.

"Elaine, I have to get going because I have matters to attend to tomorrow." She prepared to leave.

"The night is still young and you’re going home already." Elaine protested.

"Just enjoy yourself." She bid Elaine goodbye. She glanced at Erik’s table but he was busy talking with Antonio and Julia and his father. She looked for Marlon but can’t find him around so she just sent him a message.

’I did not see you around. I’m going home. Please tell Erik.’

She sneaked out of the ballroom and was booking a car when a Lexus luxury car stopped in front of her. Jax get off from the driver’s side walked around and opened the passenger door for her.

Aryana wanted to reject him but she did not want to embarrass him.

"Aryana! The boss wants to talk to you." It was Marlon and he was panting.

’Did he run to catch up with me?’

"Okay. Apologies Jax, but I need to go back." She said politely to Jax who was fuming inwardly.

"Is he pursuing you?" Marlon whispered to her as he escorted her inside the hotel and to the elevator.

"Yeah. He is using Elaine to pester me."

Marlon pressed the P button on the elevator.

"Gaeya Corporation owns this hotel and the Penthouse is reserved for the CEO of the company," Marlon explained when he saw Aryana frown.

"I did not see you in the ballroom earlier. You missed my song." Aryana said in a light manner.

"I took care of some matters. But I saw the recording. Someone did a live stream on Facebook." He took out his cell phone and showed the post to Aryana. It was the company’s official Facebook page.

They reached the penthouse in no time. Aryana was surprised to see there were no guards.

Marlon stepped in front of the door and Aryana heard a robotic message "Access allowed."

They entered a spacious living room with a posh sofa set. The flat TV screen on the wall was showing a still photo of Niagara falls.

"Marlon, why did you bring me here?" Aryana was confused.

"Erik asked me to investigate your slipping incident and I want to show you the video from earlier." Marlon clicked on the remote control and now the TV was now showing the video when Janet Yan did her introduction.

"Did you somehow offend that girl?" Marlon asked her while he played the video. He paused it on the frame where Janet dropped a small plastic tube on the floor.

"So it was her, but I don’t know her. The only person I know I offended was Julia" She said dryly.

Marlon’s eyebrows raised. "That’s interesting."

"I thought Erik wanted to talk to me?"

Marlon cleared his throat. "I just received a message from Erik that he has urgent matters to attend to."

"So why are you here Marlon, shouldn’t you be with Erik as his assistant and bodyguard?" Aryana asked him.

"Ace is there and Erik asked me to send you home."

"If there is nothing else, I want to go home. I have a photo shoot tomorrow." She said in a gloomy voice.

Marlon led her out of the penthouse into the elevator.

"Photo shoot?" He asked.

"Yeah. Remember Amy Perez, the agent who approached me? She got me an endorsement to promote a residential condominium"

The elevator opened on the ground floor. "Wait for me at the hotel entrance." Marlon pushed her out of the elevator before she can protest.

She was about to head to the hotel entrance when she froze on her track. Ahead of her, she recognized the back of two people amongst a group of well-dressed people. Julia had her hand in the crook of Erik’s elbow. He escorted her to the backseat of the black Bentley before he moved around and enter the car from the other side.

’So that is the urgent matter that he needed to attend to.’ Her expression soured. ’But it should not concern me at all.’

She walked casually and exited the hotel’s glass doors. The Bentley’s back passenger window rolled down. Julia waved at her and flashed her a triumphant smile. She vaguely heard her say "See you on Monday" as the Bentley already drove off.
