The Beautiful Boss's Personal Bodyguard -
Chapter 438 - 437
Chapter 438: 437
What’s even stranger is that people usually take photos of scenic spots and beautiful landscapes, but this godforsaken place has nothing but sand and dead grass. What’s there to photograph? That new recruit was too green to be scared, thinking back to the patriotic education he had received in the training battalion and his knowledge about enemy spies, he acted on the principle of ’better to mistakenly kill than to let go’ and charged forward. Bullets were loaded, and the bolt of his rifle made a loud rattle of noise, followed by shouts of "the Liberation Army treats POWs kindly." According to his own account, he truly prepared himself for death at that moment, having watched too many Hollywood blockbusters and thinking that spies are equipped with 800 different weapons, capable of killing with a mere glance.
The process isn’t important, but the result is that the new recruit ended up being awarded the First-class Merit, and his career path smoothed out from there.
Coming back to his senses, Ye Tian thought about it. With Huzi in this situation, not to mention First-class Merit, he should at least be a shoo-in for Second-class Merit. Why hadn’t it been approved?
"What on earth happened?"
Wu Wenjun wore a face full of worry, "Such messed up stuff happens every year, we’re used to it, but with Huzi, it feels like it’s going too far."
Ye Tian, in a rush, said, "So speak up already!"
"Ah, there’s another soldier, from another unit, also the kind of person determined to climb ranks. His application materials collided with Huzi’s, and the higher-ups started considering..."
"Hmph, I doubt that’s what the higher-ups came up with on their own."
Ye Tian started to understand what was going on.
He had encountered such situations himself when he was a low-ranking soldier. The veteran driver was a third-class Sergeant, hadn’t been home for five years, and because of his solid technical skills and exemplary performance during an earthquake disaster relief, he definitely had a spot in the promotion quota. But at the last critical moment, things went awry and his spot was snatched away by some unknown person who popped out of nowhere. The brothers were not content with this and argued all the way to the battalion commander, where it was shut down with a slam of the table. From then on, no one dared to complain. Later, the veteran driver’s name was finally included the next year.
Ye Tian had too deep an impression of that incident, he was the one who had a face-to-face confrontation with the battalion commander at the time. These quota-stealing people who suddenly emerge are usually from powerful and influential families. They come to the military to gain some credentials, which benefits their own career progression. But these are also the very people that soldiers hate the most, who they have given the nickname "Buddha Soldiers." They can’t bear hardships, running to the medical office upon the slightest training, lying in bed with a fever during drills, waiting for their families to sort everything out before they leave without a care.
Ye Tian couldn’t believe that the same issue was repeating itself today, and the anger buried in his heart was flaring up even more now, like a volcano about to erupt.
"The title of ’Martyr Huzi’ was something I fought for by slamming tables and stomping my feet in the battalion commander’s office. Huzi’s family is from the Yimeng Mountain Area, poor from the roots up. Having the title of a martyr would mean some subsidies, which would help to lift some of the burden from the elderly at home. Originally, Huzi even gave up his life..."
"Alright, don’t bother yourselves with this matter anymore."
Ye Tian walked out the door without looking back, ignoring Wu Wenjun calling out to him, striding out of the office and reaching the reception room at the entrance of the barracks.
"Yo, it’s Reporter Ye!"
"You know me?" Ye Tian was somewhat surprised.
The soldier at the reception recognized Ye Tian; the new Reporter Ye was skilled in both pen and pistol, his marksmanship was like magic, and in the battle at the border, if it weren’t for Reporter Ye, who knows how many more would have been injured.
"Of course I know you, there isn’t anyone in the whole squad who wouldn’t." His gaze was filled with an adoration akin to that for a hero.
Ye Tian felt uncomfortable being stared at and said, "That... brother, I have a favor to ask."
The soldier slapped his chest, as if he wished he could bruise it with the intensity of his promise, "Reporter Ye, you’re speaking out of turn. We are all men here, what’s with this asking for help; just tell me what you need! If I can help, I will; if I can’t, I’ll pull strings to get you the help!"
Ye Tian waved his hand, then pointed to the telephone on the desk, "That’s not necessary, I just need to make a call, okay?"
To think it was just for a phone call, the soldier showed a playful smile, "Reporter Ye, you’re really making too much of this, it’s just a call, no need to make it so serious. Here, go ahead, make as many calls as you need!"
Ye Tian smiled and dialed a number.
Although the soldier spoke lightly, he knew the rules of a military duty room well; these phones are connected twenty-four hours a day, and to put it plainly, these are emergency phones! What’s an emergency phone? It’s used to report combat situations when war breaks out. Such phones absolutely cannot be engaged or busy. Ye Tian thought to himself that after connecting the call, he had to resolve things quickly.
He dialed the Political Commissar’s cell phone from when he had left.
The direct line was an internal line and couldn’t get through, fortunately, he remembered another daily use number. After the phone rang thrice, the person on the other end picked up.
"Hello, who’s this?"
Quite polite. But Ye Tian didn’t bother being polite in return.
"Old man, it’s me, Ye Tian, here to discuss some business with you."
The soldier beside him thought, wow, this guy sure has clout!
The one on the phone was the Political Commissar whom Ye Tian had spoken with before and had a fairly good relationship with. Ye Tian knew his place too; he hadn’t called the Admiral, because even if he had, the Admiral would likely pass the buck to someone else. Better to go straight to someone a rung lower.
"What’s the matter? Found the right person yet?"
There was a nonchalant tone on the other end of the line. Ye Tian didn’t care about that and cut straight to the chase, "I’m not doing it anymore!"
Well, this was serious!
"Aiyoh, what’s going on now? We had a good talk before, didn’t we? Why are you quitting just like that? Did someone trip you up or play tricks on you?"
The voice suddenly lost its indifference and started to sound anxious; if Ye Tian quit, then they wouldn’t be able to find anyone else to do this difficult task.
Ye Tian also started to feel the urgency, "My old chief, people won’t even give me the time of day, how am I supposed to carry out my work, how am I supposed to recruit people, how am I to find a group of soldiers capable of completing the task? What do you think?"
"Who? Which unit? You tell me, I’ll sort it out for you."
Ye Tian grinned with a bared-teeth smile, yet didn’t reveal his feelings, "My old chief, you can’t just act recklessly. We are all in the military service; who doesn’t know who? If they find out it was me who reported them, wouldn’t they tear me to pieces! You can’t do this."
