The Beautiful Boss's Personal Bodyguard -
Chapter 147
Chapter 147: Chapter 147
"Hmph, Ye Tian, the one thing you’ve learned well is how to see guests out with tea. I warn you, Chen Pingrui has already been placed under close surveillance by the police. You’d better be careful not to get yourself involved and drag others down with you."
Watching the slim figure of Song Qian exit the room, Ye Tian let out a sigh of relief, set down the cup he was holding, rubbed his face with both hands, then leaned back on the sofa. Mulling over Song Qian’s words, he tried to discern some deeper implications—Chen Pingrui was being watched by the police? Was this supposed to be a tip-off?
Such information should be confidential. Song Qian, with her strong principles, wouldn’t just reveal it casually.
A smile played on Ye Tian’s lips, bittersweet. If it weren’t for the burden of revenge on his shoulders, they might have been good friends.
The charity auction was scheduled for the evening.
All afternoon, people continued to trickle in. Ye Tian peered out the window at the luxury cars lining up at the door, pondering Song Qian’s words while considering whether he might really get himself involved. The scales of equal exchange began to tip in his mind.
Zhang Houtu had no interest in such scenes. He would much rather stand beside the old master on the observation deck, watching a vast army of steel warriors and tanks and planes advancing together, dust swirling, the west wind sweeping across—now that was a true spectacle. After lunch, stifled by staying indoors, Zhang Houtu decided he needed some fresh air, but not knowing anyone outside, he eventually resolved to visit Ye Tian’s room.
Their rooms were next to each other. The hallway was brightly lit with a white color scheme—Zhang Houtu, feeling out of place, shook his head, rubbed his eyes, and knocked on Ye Tian’s door.
"Here?"
"Mhm."
Ye Tian winked at Zhang Houtu, then opened the door. Zhang Houtu, a big fellow, almost hit his head on the top of the door frame. Although he was smiling, his right hand was already clenched into a fist the size of a vinegar bowl.
It was Zhang Xiayang.
Why was he here?
"Don’t look at me like that. If you, a soldier, know how to slip through doors and pick locks, then he, a pirate, would certainly find it even easier."
Zhang Houtu stood there quietly, looking at Zhang Xiayang. Although they shared the same surname, there wasn’t a single word they could agree on.
"Are you here to trouble Ye Tian?" His heavy voice carried not a trace of anger or heat, as calm as if conversing with a friend.
Zhang Xiayang nodded, "Didn’t have that intention before, but now I do."
A Butterfly Knife flipped up and down in Zhang Xiayang’s hand, its cold light glittering without pause or constraint, smooth as silk across the fingertips, until the final moment of sheathing the knife revealed a hint of murderous intent for the first time.
Zhang Xiayang raised an eyebrow, "Ye Tian, what would you do if I were to kill you right now?"
"If I can fight, I’ll fight; if I can’t, I’ll run."
"Hmph, you sure take it lightly."
He snorted coldly, Zhang Xiayang stood up, flinging the Butterfly Knife onto the floor where it embedded deeply into the wood.
"My knife will stay here, and when I come back for you, I hope it can be returned intact."
Ye Tian looked at the knife, shook his head, and curled his lips, "This knife, tsk tsk, all flash and no substance, not even as good as a pig slaughtering knife."
Ignoring Ye Tian’s slick talk, Zhang Xiayang brushed past him. When passing by Zhang Houtu, the shorter Zhang Xiayang paused and said, "Big guy, I can assure you, you can’t beat me."
"Yeah, I know."
Is this kid genuinely dumb or just playing the fool?
Ye Tian shook his head as he watched Zhang Houtu scratch his head and chuckle foolishly. He also frowned at the white figure walking away, thinking, what is this guy doing, showing off and acting cool here for nothing! I’m not some sexy little maiden after all.
"Alright, Old Zhang, it’s time, let’s go down for the meal."
When it comes to filling his stomach, Ye Tian would always choose food over dealing with someone like Zhang Xiayang, especially since the meals at these philanthropic galas, posing as charitable events but not quite so, are free anyway. On the way, Zhang Houtu kept bombarding Ye Tian with questions like "What’s Zhang Xiayang here for?" "Did he do anything to you?" "How did he get in?" Ye Tian kept his lips sealed until Zhang Houtu decided to shut up on his own.
The banquet was held on the 18th floor, and one could tell that it had undergone meticulous arrangement, especially the stage and the speaker’s desk, indicating that important figures would appear tonight.
Ye Tian stood at the elevator’s exit, waiting until Chen Pingrui came out to greet him.
"Uncle Chen."
"Hm. Ye Tian, you two just follow me, and find a spot to sit in a bit. If you see something you like in the auction, just bid, and Uncle Chen will get it for you."
Regardless of whether these words were true or not, Ye Tian kept thanking him over and over, and Zhang Houtu joined in the thanks. Though he was a man of few words, his earnest expression earned a nod and a smile from Chen Pingrui, who then walked into the crowd with Zhang Xiayang following closely behind like a steel spear, preventing any potential threats from getting close to Chen Pingrui.
People of all shapes and trades made their way to greet him, some wealthy individuals driving Bentleys and Cadillacs, some government officials in simple clothes, driving Audis or Hyundais. Those who found it inconvenient to greet directly nodded and raised their drinks toward Chen Pingrui from a distance. In any case, half of the venue had already formed some sort of real or superficial connection with Chen Pingrui.
"See that? That’s Chen Pingrui. Get it?"
With his mouth bulging with various foods, Ye Tian was still trying to teach Zhang Houtu a lesson, gulping down his words. Zhang Houtu might be a straightforward guy, but his stomach wasn’t, seeing the table full of food, he lost control. The army is poor, indeed one could eat until full, but the quality of food wasn’t high, delicacies from land and sea were definitely out of reach.
His eating might not look very graceful, but his mind was clear. After serious thought on Ye Tian’s question, Zhang Houtu still shook his head, "What should I understand?"
"Strong limbs, simple mind," Ye Tian threw him an annoyed look and continued, "I’ve been racking my brain, wondering why those two sisters saved us last time. The reason is nothing more than using us as cannon fodder. Being cannon fodder is fine, but where is the target, huh? Tell me, where?"
Zhang Houtu, with a large lobster tail in his mouth, its claw dangling at the side, stared blankly at Eunuch Rui mingling and clinking glasses in the distance, mumbling unclearly, "Chen... Pingrui..."
"That’s right!"
