Chapter 138: Nyx’s return to the palace 2

Aegis leaned back on his throne, his eyes narrowing as he gazed at Nyx, who stood confidently before him. The tension between them was palpable, each sizing up the other, wondering who would make the first move.

"I cannot trust you just like that, Nyx," Aegis said, his voice low and dripping with suspicion. "You suddenly show up here, wanting to be on my side? It does not add up."

Nyx’s expression remained calm, almost serene, as if she had anticipated his skepticism. "I understand your reservations," she replied smoothly. "Trust is not something given freely; it must be earned. If it helps, put me on probation. Let me prove my loyalty to you."

Aegis squinted his eyes, leaning forward slightly as he studied her face, searching for any sign of deceit. "Why would you want to be with me now? You have always stood by Oberon. What has changed?"

Nyx’s smile didn’t waver, but she cast a quick glance at the guards stationed around the room. "Would you dismiss the guards, Aegis? What I have to say is for your ears only."

Aegis hesitated for a brief moment, then made a small gesture with his hand. The guards, well-trained and unquestioning, filed out of the throne room without a word. The heavy doors closed behind them with a resounding thud, leaving Nyx and Aegis alone in the vast, echoing chamber.

Nyx’s smile turned more seductive as she sauntered toward the throne, each step measured and deliberate. Her movements were graceful, almost feline, and Aegis couldn’t help but feel a flutter of unease in his chest. She stopped just before reaching the throne, her eyes locked onto his, her smile widening with every second.

"I am tired, Aegis," Nyx confessed, her voice low and sultry. "Tired of living a low life. Tired of watching from the shadows as others seize power. Oberon...he has been misguided, stubborn in his beliefs, refusing to see the bigger picture. I have realized that his desire to fight you, his own uncle, is nothing but folly. He is wrong, Aegis, and I can no longer stand by and watch him destroy himself. I want to support you, to stand by your side."

"Trust is not something that can be demanded or given lightly, Aegis," Nyx continued, her voice unwavering. "I am not expecting you to trust me immediately. Take your time, observe me if you must, even place me on probation. I am willing to earn your trust."

Aegis squinted, his sharp gaze cutting through the space between them as if trying to peel away any deceit hidden behind her words. He leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on his knees, his fingers steepling in front of his face. "Why would you suddenly want to abandon Oberon? After all you’ve done to protect him?"

Nyx paused, her eyes flickering with a mix of emotions, though she quickly masked them. She took a deep breath before speaking. "Aegis, I would prefer if we spoke privately." Her voice softened, her eyes darting toward the guards stationed around the room. "This is not a conversation for many ears."

Aegis hesitated, his suspicion deepening. But there was something in her demeanor that made him curious—perhaps it was the way she carried herself, or the subtle edge of desperation hidden behind her calm facade. With a curt nod, he signaled the guards. The room filled with the sound of clanking armor as the guards obediently filed out, leaving the two alone in the throne room. The heavy doors shut behind them with an echo that lingered in the silence.

Nyx waited until they were truly alone before she moved. Her steps were slow and deliberate as she approached the throne, her hips swaying subtly with each step.

Aegis couldn’t help but notice the way she carried herself—there was an undeniable grace, but something else too, something that made him uneasy. He stiffened in his seat, though his eyes remained locked on her.

When she stopped just before the throne, her smile widened, a seductive curve to her lips. "Aegis," she began, her voice taking on a sultry tone, "I am tired of living in the shadows, scraping by with a life that’s beneath me. Oberon has been blinded by his ideals, his desire to fight you—his own blood. It is foolishness, and I cannot stand by it any longer."

Aegis remained silent, though his heart quickened slightly at her words. He could sense the truth in her voice, but he knew better than to let his guard down so easily. Still, her words resonated with something deep within him, a part of him that had always believed that Oberon was misguided. He nodded slowly, as if considering her words carefully. "You did the right thing by coming to me," he said finally. "Oberon has always been stubborn, but I never thought you would turn your back on him."

Nyx’s smile remained, though there was a flicker of something else in her eyes—something darker, more calculated. " I have come to realize that aligning with you is the only way to ensure that."

Aegis felt a sense of victory, a smug satisfaction rising in his chest. He had always known Nyx was powerful, a force to be reckoned with, but having her on his side would be a significant advantage. "You are wise to see things this way," he said, his voice taking on a more relaxed tone. "Oberon will be dealt with, and together, we will rule as we should."

Just as the words left his mouth, the doors to the throne room creaked open, breaking the tension in the air. Aegis’s head snapped toward the entrance, his eyes narrowing in annoyance at the interruption. Nyx turned her head as well, her expression quickly morphing from one of confidence to surprise.

Risa stepped into the room, her presence immediately commanding attention. She was a striking figure, her long dark hair cascading down her back, her sharp eyes scanning the room with a quick, calculating gaze. She moved with a grace that rivaled Nyx’s, though there was a coldness to her demeanor that set her apart.

"Am I interrupting something?" Risa asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm as she took in the scene before her. Her eyes darted between Aegis and Nyx, suspicion etched across her features.

Aegis straightened, his annoyance clear as he spoke. "Risa, what are you doing here?"

Risa blinked rapidly, her usually sharp eyes wide with disbelief as she stared at Nyx. Her mouth fell open, the words struggling to form on her tongue. She took a step closer, as if needing to confirm that what she was seeing was real.

"Nyx... Nyx..." Risa stammered, her voice faltering with each word. "How? What are you doing here? You are alive?"

Nyx smiled, a slow, deliberate curve of her lips, but she remained silent. She seemed to savor the distress etched across Risa’s face, her silence speaking volumes. There was a cold satisfaction in her eyes as she watched the other woman grapple with the shock of seeing her standing there, very much alive.

Aegis shifted uncomfortably on his throne, his eyes flicking between the two women. The tension in the room was thick, almost suffocating, and he did not like it. His initial irritation at Risa’s interruption was now replaced with impatience. He had no time for this. Whatever past the two women shared, it was irrelevant to him now.

"Risa," Aegis said, his voice carrying a note of authority. "Leave us. We have important matters to discuss."

But Risa didn’t move. She seemed rooted to the spot, her shock overriding Aegis’s command. Her eyes were locked on Nyx, her mind struggling to comprehend what she was seeing. "How...?" she breathed, the question escaping her lips almost involuntarily. "How are you alive?"

Nyx’s smile widened slightly, a glint of amusement dancing in her eyes. "Did you think I would die so easily?" she finally replied, her voice as smooth as silk. "You should know by now, Risa, that I am not so easily vanquished."

Risa’s lips trembled, a mix of emotions flashing across her face—relief, confusion, and something else, something darker. She shook her head slightly, as if trying to dispel the fog of disbelief clouding her mind. "But... how?" she repeated, her voice a mere whisper now."

Nyx tilted her head slightly, her gaze never leaving Risa’s. "Sometimes, Risa, it is useful to let people believe what they want to believe."

Aegis, growing more impatient by the second, leaned forward, his voice cutting through the air like a blade. "Risa, enough!" he barked. "Leave us, now."

But Risa still didn’t move. She seemed paralyzed, her mind stuck in a loop, unable to process the reality in front of her. Her eyes searched Nyx’s face, looking for answers, for some explanation that would make sense of the impossible.

Aegis clenched his jaw, his patience finally snapping. "Risa, I will not ask again."

Finally, Risa tore her gaze away from Nyx, her expression a mixture of fear and confusion. She looked at Aegis, her eyes wide, before nodding slowly, as if finally coming to her senses. "Yes, my lord," she murmured, her voice barely audible. Without another word, she turned and left the room, though her steps were unsteady, as if she were in a daze.

As the doors closed behind her, Nyx turned her attention back to Aegis, her smile returning. "Now, where were we?" she purred, her tone dripping with dangerous allure.
