The Alpha's Blind Fate -
Chapter 49: Go Away…With Me?
Chapter 49: Go Away...With Me?
MOON
The sixth Alpha Prince and the Alpha of Stone Pack ushered them into the Castle of Stones that was his main abode. Since it was an unfamiliar environment, Zina needed the guidance of Seraph to navigate the place.
Once they were in the castle’s drawing room, Seraph, Ablanch and the Epsilons guarding the prince bowed to them and left the room... although on Seraph’s part, she didn’t bother masking her reluctance to leave the room.
Once the door shut behind them, Falcon sprang up, clutching Zina’s shoulders as if examining her for any grace hurt.
"Are you fine? I have nary heard a thing about you in the past few months... have you been doing well?"
Carefully, Zina pried his fingers off her shoulders. Managing another smile she said. "I am the Theta of the NorthSteed Pack, your worry for me is exaggerated."
Although the pain her body was in from Eldric’s earlier lashing out on her didn’t conform with her words, Zina was able to easily maintain her lie with an easy smile.
"Have you been well, Alpha Stone."
"Please, do not stand on ceremony with me. You know how I hate you being so fastidious."
Seeing that Zina was not commenting any further, the man ran a hand through his face and dirty brown hair. "I’ve been fine," he answered gruffly, unable to pry his eyes from the woman standing before him, "what about you. Have you been well, Zina
?""Again, I am fine."
Another uncomfortable silence descended on them. Zina hadn’t anticipated that their meeting after all those months would still be that uncomfortable. She was thinking of a way to broach the topic she had made the journey for when Falcon spoke in a raw voice.
"I sent you letters. You never responded to a single one of them."
Zina, dreading the turn of the conversation, lapped her palm against each other on her abdomen, assuming an authoritative stance she had learned to use whenever she wanted to appear more serious than usual.
"I am terribly busy. I could not find the time to respond."
Falcon expelled a harsh breath as if he was the tethering on the precipice of control. "If you’re doing so well, then how is it that I hear there have been three attempts on your life just in the past few months?"
The man clutched Zina by her shoulders again, his grip tighter. "Say the word, and I will take you away from all this."
Perhaps, Zina was harsh to have described Falcon’s feelings towards her as obsessive. Because while there was obsession alright, before that, Falcon NorthSteed was a brief ray of light that shined in one of her darkest moments. The one time that she had steeled her heart and decided to let go of everything.
For no matter how much Zina looked at it, her sufferings and the guilt she was drowning in at the time was not worth a thousand lives over again. She was in such a dark headspace, one where not even her position as Theta could save her. The title had almost become meaningless as she drowned in Eldric’s harsh reign.
It was four years ago when Zina had woken up and asked her then guard to escort her to the Blams Waterfalls—one of the six natural wonders of Vraga. The waterfall was known for its peculiar thunderous roar, cascading down in a tumultuous rush of frothy white. Its waters, born from the heights where the mountains kissed the sky, plunged with an unyielding force that echoed Zina’s own inner turmoil.
In the rushing sound it produced, Zina could very well hear her sadness, her hurt, her grievances, and her tearing heart.
Standing alone at the precipice, Zina felt the misty veil envelop her, shrouding her in a cool embrace that whispered of never forgotten secrets carried with the breeze.
The pool below churned with a relentless energy, carving its path through ancient rock with a determination that mirrored Zina’s resolve that day. As she gazed into the abyss, letting the roar of the waterfall drown out the cacophony of doubts in her mind, she plunged off the mountain to her death. But before she could land, a strong jaw encased her neck with a roar, then the werewolf risked a tumultuous jump that brought them to safety.
More shocking than the realisation that her life could not be easily taken as she pleased when she was already marked by Daemon NorthSteed was the fact that Falcon whom she had never interacted with before was the werewolf who saved her.
And more shocking than that was the circumstances surrounding how Falcon discovered her in the first place. It had turned out that Zina had acquired for herself an unwarranted admirer who followed her on the day she decided to end her life.
What could have warranted his admiration—albeit creepy?
Zina was never one to delude herself. She was no rare beauty, nor did she possess the minimum requirements of attraction in their world which was possessing a wolf. Being an aberrant, she had neither the ability to go into heat, to mate, or to breed. Throw that in with Zina’s vow of chastity, it would seem that she was the most unappealing as far the word was concerned.
Of course, they were men that audaciously claimed to be enchanted by Zina. Men whose boldness stemmed from the fact that it would be nothing less than exciting to lay with the incorruptible Theta, chanted the great seer.
But their useless pursuit stopped the moment they realised that Zina was not a living thing, rather a dead shell walking among the living.
Desire? Want? Need? Zina had never felt any of that in the last six years... or perhaps, all her life.
Knowing it was wrong and manipulative of her, Zina took a step closer to Falcon, her palm still folded on her front. "Five years ago when you saved me, you told me that my life is mine to choose, and my death is mine to order."
The words hung between them, dredging up memories of a moonless night, and the thunderous roars of waterfalls.
"I did say that."
"Can I command something heinous from you as your Theta?" Zina demanded, her blindfolded eyes resting squarely on his face.
Falcon swallowed, while Zina’s breath hitched in her throat as the absurdity of her plan caught up with her. As far as loyalty went, Falcon was very loyal to Eldric despite the Alpha King’s foolishness. Falcon was a man of staunch rules and regulations... he was never one to stray away from the path.
"What is it you wish to command that makes you take such an arduous journey?" Falcon asked, taking a step forward this time around, rendering the space between them two steps apart.
"My life." Zina answered quickly, not finding the need to dawdle anymore. "The Alpha King intends to send me to the GreenLands to remind the banished prince of who is his king."
Falcon sucked in a deep breath tethering between rage and confusion. "My brother sends you to your death. Daemon will definitely not leave you unscathed."
Zina found Falcon’s perspective refreshing and not without reason, but Daemon was hardly who she was worried about. If anything, the only thing she was worried about was the fact that she might never make it to him.
"The banished prince is not the only problem I face. I fear I might never make it to him or the GreenLands alive..." Zina trailed for the drama of it, "...but my fears will be allayed if I have someone like you travelling with me."
A silence descended on them, causing the air between them to turn chilled. The intent of her words wasn’t lost on Falcon.
"You want me to win a place at the knighting ceremony and then ask my brother, the Alpha King, for leave to escort the divine Theta to the GreenLands?" Falcon said after thinking deeply about Zina’s request.
There was a question of honour and loyalty. Making such a request of Eldric wasn’t entirely out of place as it was the pack’s duty to protect the Theta, but Eldric would see it as Falcon being a disloyal vassal if he made such an unusual request.
But there was also a question of duty. Falcon was once in charge of the elite Epsilons in charge of guarding the Alpha King before he was banished from the palace. In his former duty—a place where he stood tall while admiring the woman with ghostly silver hair, and beautifully haunting murky white eyes—it had been Falcon’s duty to protect the Theta of the pack.
And now Alpha Stone, whenever he heard of the assassination attempts on Zina, all Falcon could think of was the incompetence that scourged a position he once held dear to his heart.
Sensing hesitation from his side, Zina pressed further. "Your accompanying me is not disloyal or against the law. You’re still a NorthSteed, and I am the Theta of the NorthSteed pack."
"You do not need to speak more. I shall deal with this matter." Falcon answered with a determination that almost caused Zina to smile. Her future travel retinue didn’t look so pitiable anymore now she added Falcon’s level three Stray Shifter.
Zinc bowed slightly. "I shall wait for good news at the knighting ceremony. Fight well, Alpha Stone."
And with that, she turned to leave only for his voice—tinged with raw need—to stop her again.
"Do you not think that it is time to run away from everything? To go away to somewhere else... with me?"
