Chapter 408: A Battle Of ‘Seers’ (I)
ZINA
Rowan managed to tug back his hand, his eyes wide with shock at the madness in her eyes.
"Did you not break her?!" The Seven Elders screamed in one voice, their furious eyes on Master who seemed befuddled.
Zina laughed, turning to face the women. "Even broken things can be pieced together. Not to talk of broken people."
"If she wasn’t broken, the Deformed will never have been awoken," Master explained, "your prophecy said it needs her complete will, and that was how we were able to make it happen."
"So there’s a prophecy behind this madness," Zina said to the women, "I guess the seer part of your title doesn’t stem from you old things being the overwatch council of the West. You think yourselves as seers."
Seven pair of eyes rested on her and they all wore equal sneers. "What does a child like you know? Fate can’t be defiled nor destiny thwarted. Whatever mistake that has happened today must be corrected, and we shall do this again." They said dismissively then turned to leave as one.
"Since the seven of you are so powerful, then you must have seen that I will die for good today. And once I die, your oak tree will be destroyed for good."
That had them freezing in their steps while Master and Rowan wore looks of sheer surprise.
Her mother tried to silently communicate to her with her eyes, but Zina avoided the woman. This fight she would fight alone. She was not going to let another person make an unworthy sacrifice for her.
The Seven Elders turned back to her slowly. "Words are weapons. Words are powerful. Careful what you say now, Thralgor."
How was it that they all knew they exact same words to say at the same time and pacing. And what was with the one voice they all seemed to use together?
"I was merely curious," Zina said, approaching them audaciously, "since you were the ones who prophesied my role today. Even went as far as to subdue my mother to make it come to pass, it’s only fair that you foresee my death as well."
"You will not die today," they all said, "you will never die. You will live in time immemorial. And we will subdue the world in the name of Thralgor. This power you flex before us today. This so called power that has made many chant you as a great seer is but a joke. A child’s play. Surely you do not think you could intimidate the Elders into groveling before you?"
So they all thought that her powers were something so insignificant and unworthy to be mentioned of. Their cockiness was on another level, and Zina was even more determined to break through their gilded glass.
No wonder ever since they captured her, none of them had seemed to be interested in knowing how a being they had gone to so much lengths to create had come to possess the power of sight.
That was precisely because they thought she was nothing more than a street trickster, exchanging fortune telling for bronze coins.
She watched water drip from a crack on the rocky roof. Just exactly as she had seen it.
Smiling smugly, she said, "In five seconds, a messenger shall now enter and deliver a beautiful news. Although I must say that will hardly be the highlight of today."
Before they could fully process that information, a knock sounded on the door. It opened, and the same ancient looking woman who had greeted Zina and Rowan on their first day there entered, her skin ashen.
"Elders, Master, Alpha Rowan." She greeted, "I have news...." She trailed uncomfortably much to the anger of the Seven Elders.
"Spill," they said in one terrifying voice.
"The body of the Spy, Melwyn, has been hung on the walls of the Elders’ abode." the woman answered in a terrified voice.
"Who dared to get close to the dwellings of the Elders! That is impossible!" Master growled, spittle flying out from his sparse teeth.
"The culprit is said to possess no wolf. Hence, why it was possible for it to get close."
No wolf? That must be shadow, Daemon’s confidante who once worked for his mother.
But Zina didn’t flinch at that information. Instead she held her head high, seemingly unfazed.
Daemon was indeed there to rescue her.
Probably closer than she could have ever thought.
But she must make he didn’t get closer than necessary. She could take every pain as long as he remained fine and took his place as ruler.
"Is she dead?" Rowan gritted the question while glaring at her.
"She was bleeding when they found her. Barely hanging onto her life. But she was still alive. Still is even now although they say her mind is not quite it. She keeps muttering something about her son...." The woman trailed in her rambling.
Zina smiled at the Seven Elders. "Now it’s your turn. Look me in the eyes and tell me—do you think I will die today or not? The answer to this question after all holds the key to whether or not your plans will succeed."
They narrowed their eyes at her as if they found her antics boring and childish at most. "You cannot die today. Or ever." They said, "have her tamed all over again. Do not fear for her life," they instructed Rowan.
Zina stepped closer to Master, dancing out of reach from Rowan. Staring meaningfully at the half man.
"What if I killed myself with my staff? Do you think I will die then?"
The man froze, his face betraying the knowledge that Zina had greatly suspected but has now confirmed.
"We are disappointed!" The Seven Elders gritted, "how could you let her come to this! She has become wild, untamed, uncontrollable! You must correct this error!"
Rowan grabbed her, attempting to drag her out of the room. But Zina was not quite done yet.
"Since the Seven Elders have faulty eyes, then I shall lay out before you one more vision."
They glared at her. "Take her away!" They screamed this time around.
"Daemon NorthSteed’s spy lies in this Manor. One of your own has long betrayed you!"
