Chapter 398: Unable To Face Him

ZINA (Present)

Seraph listened dutifully as Zina made a quick rundown of the tale that her mother spoke to her of.

As the good listener that she was, she didn’t interrupt for once. Only ’oohing’ and ’ahhhing’ at the right places. And when Zina was done, she asked the one question that she had been somewhat expecting her to ask.

"Since you feel your mother is keeping something away from you, is it still wise for you to take the staff to her?"

"Whether she is hiding something from me or not, it is true that we must end this. And I too beleive that to end all of this, we need to access the staff that seated. At first, I thought that the Staff was needed to revive the Deformed. But since they were able to revive those monsters just fine without the staff, then it must mean the object serve a different purpose."

Zina had thought it strange. When she had been brought there at first, they had repeatedly tortured her, asking her the whereabouts of the staff. But suddenly they seemed to be no longer interested in it; barely talking of it again in the last rounds of her torture.

The heart of a wolf was after all the hardest to discern, but she couldn’t deny that there was something suspicious about it. Almost like Rowan had been antsy about getting the staff like it could have blocked his plans should it be in the wrong hands, but then when he realised that might not be the case and that maybe Zina had simply hidden it at a place where no one could access it, he had then relaxed no longer perturbed by it.

Intentionally, they had misled her into thinking that as long as she held back on the whereabouts the staff, nothing would go wrong, but that was untrue. All along the only thing they ever needed was just her... and perhaps a willingness to resurrect the creatures.

Trying to recall back the strange events when she had willingly given up her blood for the cause, she could remember that Roman was watching her with hawk like eyes.

Like he was almost unsure whether the plan would succeed or fail. Maybe she was reading too much into it, but even as her fried brain mindlessly did what she was told, she was sure of the look in his eyes. Having spent half her life blind, and the last few months she regained her sight, reading eyes to discern the human heart, she couldn’t have gotten it wrong.

What all that meant was in one way or the other, the staff might actually be a weapon that would destroy the Deformed. She had no doubt that Daemon already probably knew of that fact given his resources. Which was also why she was sure he was doubt with the staff there in the West.

"If it’s remotely possible that I can leave, then you should be the one to reach his majesty!" Seraph whisper shouted while Zina sat cross-legged in front of the arranged candles.

"Why go through all the plan of taking back the staff while you’re still trapped here? Would it not be better if you just leave?"

Zina smiled. "Do you remember I used to tell you I’ve bloody visions. Visions of blood, a wasteland and nothing else?"

Seraph nodded grimly. That part of Zina’s visions had been the most turbulent. Sometimes they came to her as turbulent nightmares, other times they haunted her even when she was awake.

She had already started seeing visions of the Deformed ravaging their world long before this time, so there was no way she could simply run away from this situation even if she could.

Her legs had been long tied together by fate. Not to mention that she didn’t have the face to face him....

"I cannot leave," Zina said, her words more like a declaration, "since this was started with my blood, I just see this to the end."

"Theta...."

"I’ve briefly studied the map you managed to steal," Zina cut her off, "at first I wanted to use to the Pack Runes and portal you away but I fear I do not have the power to do so. Manual escape is your only option."

Seraph’s shoulder slumped in resignation at the resoluteness in her tone. "What is your command, Theta?"

"You said Rowan wishes to marry me. The manor is preparing for the same, correct?"

The maidservant’s face hardened like ice. "Correct. He is chasing a fool’s dream of course! His majesty will strangle him before that happens!"

Since Roman was so antsy to prove that Zina had turned to the bad side, she no longer had any choice but to entertain him.

"In that case I will marry him." Zina said much to Seraph’s horror.

"What?" She said with her jaw dropped to the ground.

"A marriage is sure to be a noisy, messy affair. Especially since I know he is doing it in part to raise Daemon’s ire and weaken the purpose behind his declaration of war."

"Theta...!"

"Not only that, I know he wishes to tell the world that I am alive and also the one behind the monsters that will now ravage them."

"Theta... I know you’re being intelligent and all that, trying to predict for the greater good. But can you be selfish for once?! I know you keep it away from me but I am sure you’re in so much pain!"

Pain? Sins had somewhat become numb to it. Was it when she was stripped of her dignity and tortured like she was a mere object? Or was when she watched blood flow from between her thighs as the child she never told Daemon about ceased to exist? Or was it when the last bouts of torture came upon her and she had to watch helplessly as she killed Daemon over and over again.

A sharp pain zapped through her heart like a dagger slicing through. So sharp she had no choice but to gasp, spluttering as well.

"That marriage... that wedding will happen hopefully when I am not lucid," Zina said, her palm over her heart. "And when it happens, that will be your chance to escape. Do you understand?"

But Seraph was no longer listening, instead her eyes was on Zina.

"You’re turning red, Theta." The girl said.

That was true, Zina was feeling uncomfortable all over. With her heart aching and also feeling out of breath.

She held the ground for suooort, feeling like her lucidity would soon leave thereafter she would turn into the heartless monster everyone hoped her to be.

She needed to enter the trance now and see the vision she seeked from the full moon.
