Chapter 388: Cracked Then Broken

Chapter 388: Cracked Then Broken

NB: We’ll be having a change in POV

ROWAN

"Look at them, Thralgor," the Red Haired man whispered decadently to the raggedly dressed white haired young woman, "don’t you feel them in your veins?" He asked.

Mostly because despite their evident victory, he still need to make sure that she was in fact broken. Not half broken, nor quarter broken, but broken in all ways.

Meanwhile, the white haired one, once called Zina NorthSteed but now answered to her name as Thralgor, set her gaze upon the ancient oak tree where piles of stone-hardened monsters converged at.

Their expressions frozen like they had been submerged in an eternal sleep, the woman’s confused expression almost mirrored theirs.

Just hours ago, under the rod and illusionary and hypnotic powers of the notorious Red Sister, Rose, Zina had resisted being broken by them. Not when they showed her her bleak pasts, nor when they presented before her a terrible future.

She stood strong on her ground, so much so that Rowan was forced to admire her. In her mother’s case, it had only taken six of the rod made out of the ancient oak tree for her to break. But her daughter was a different case. With spine made of metal, she stood unwavering.

And her resolve never wavered; not when she lost her child, or when she saw illusions of taking her husband’s life.

But all things in the world were destined to be broken. It was a matter of time even though Rowan had none to spare. So he speared forward, ripping her of everything she ever possessed—her shame, her dignity, her wolf, her child, her husband... it was a delightful affair should he say so himself.

He cracked at her resolve first, and by the time the tenth rod descended on her, showing her a ruined world where only she survived, she had passed out. And when she woke up again, Rowan knew it from the darkness in her eyes—the way the light had slipped away from those once bright light blue orbs—that she was finally broken.

"I...." She began to answer hesitantly at his question, but he waited, a smug smile tugged at his lips.

"Take it easy; tell me what you feel?" Rowan probed, holding her hand gently almost like a lover.

Her eyes widened—the poor little thing. She was so out of it in her head that Rowan feared she had forgotten herself and the place where she was at.

"I feel them," she said with great difficulty, her lips contorting to a frown as if she was unaware of the meaning of her own words.

Her grogginess was to be expected.

"Good," Rowan whispered, nodding appreciatively, "there are about a thousand of them here. Their numbers is just enough for us to send them out to every corner of Vraga. They will fight the war we have been unable to fight, and they will win the struggles we have been unable to win."

Her face contorted into a frown. "A thousand? Is that number not too small?" She said with all seriousness etched to her face.

So different... she was so different from the woman that was bound thirty minutes ago and who had her head tilted up defiantly.

The shadow of a wicked smirk began to crawl upon her lips, and seeing so much darkness in her made the wait all worth it.

It was twenty-four years of careful planning, but finally, the time for them to take over the world has come.

"Are you already to awaken them?" Rowan said while the woman before her smiled.

"Naturally." She answered curtly. A one worded answer that conveyed her cold determination.

Rose entered the room, bearing a bowl of blood that no doubt belonged to Ameneris. This was one of the reasons why they had kept the woman for so long. Soon, as long as things went their way, she would become expendable.

Gruk, one of the two deformed that wasn’t a frozen thing and also the monster that sired Zina walked towards them, his steps shaking the ground beneath them while a strange expression overtook his face.

Rowan narrowed his eyes at him and the tender expression on his face. Admittedly, his newfound attitude in the face of his daughter was not something they had predicted.

The first time, it had run off to save Zina who at the time was being held hostage by the rogues at the time.

Over hearing a conversation meant to mislead the Matriachy on Zina’s impending death, Gruk had run off thinking she would die. Little did the Elder Deformed know that Master had only meant to keep away the fact that Zina could resurrect on the Waxing Crescent from the Matriach.

The second time was when Daemon NorthSteed was taking his place as the Alpha King of the North. That was by far the most uncomfortable albeit comical one.

Gruk on hearing that the son of the woman he murdered years ago was about to be King and Lord of his daughter had run off yet again to murder Daemon. Not like Rowan had any qualms with the man dying, but should anything have happened to Gruk, it wouldn’t have been remotely funny.

But the one thing the whole experience taught them about their experiment was that in one way or more, the Deformed were capable of possessing emotional intelligence. That was an unexpected edge but they could clearly see how it could be exploited should such a trait spread amongst every single one of the Deformed.

Instead of aimless killing, weaponizing the deformed as intelligent killers was more appealing. Although research clearly showed that the reason why Gruk possessed such intelligence was because someone was thethered to his bloodline.

So should they want every Deformed to possess such emotional intelligence, then that would mean Rowan would have to cause every single one of those creatures lying under the elder oak tree to procreate.

An act that was gory as it was exhausting.

Rowan narrowed his eyes at the approaching creature. With the features of a wolf and standing ten feet tall like a Lycan shifter, Gruk was far more peculiar than his eight feet tall brothers who were still with their eyes shut against the world.

"Marek!" He commanded in the ancient language of the mountain wolves. It was a word that meant ’back down’, but Gruk didn’t hear... or he was pretending not to for he continued advancing towards them, his eyes set to Zina who stared back at it with the iciest expression in the world.

Not quite hate, nor was it disgust. Just plain expression of disinterest.

But Gruk wasn’t unnerved by that. Spittle dropping from its jaw, eyes blinking tenderly, face set hesitantly, he continued his advance.

"Get it to back down, Rose." Rowan growled, collecting the bowl of blood from the woman.

Then he turned to face Zina squarely. "Are you ready to set them free?" He asked, holding out the bowl of blood to her.
