The Alpha's Blind Fate
Chapter 38: The Poster Of Commotion

Chapter 38: The Poster Of Commotion

MOON

A way to take your vengeance? Those were the words that finally brought a semblance of emotion on the grim man’s face. Staring intently at the revered Theta who had kicked hope in his dead heart, he decided to confirm if he heard right.

"A way to take my vengeance?" He repeated, not quite believing that was possible. While it was true that the Theta was an embodiment of hope and encouragement, she was no Alpha, nor was she a king.

So was it possible that this blind woman whose white eyes eerily rested squarely on him could have a way for him to get his revenge?

The dead faces of his wife and two little children flashed before his eyes. The hunger they felt, the despair they went through, the depression that finally took their life. He wanted to die too alright, but the thought that his loved ones souls could rest easier had him wishing to live.

Was there really a way?

"There’s a way," the Theta said in same ominous voice. "and the way to it lies in the GreenLands."

It occurred to the man that he had come seeking a semblance of peace for his turbulent soul, not expecting that the Theta would do more than that for him. He had almost forgotten who the woman before him was; the Great Seer who foretold the Great Famine that would have crippled their world otherwise.

With a great cry, the man kowtowed, laying himself bare for the woman who could not see. "Do you have a vision for me, great theta?!"

The woman smiled cynically in the face of his great despair. "I guess you could call it that. At the GreenLands, join the Army Without An Alpha. From the man who leads it you shall finally see light."

The man was shocked. "Do you mean the banished prince?"

The Theta simply nodded grimly. "A wind of change would soon blow." She said in a distant voice that sent chills to the man.

Bowing further as if that were possible, the man screamed his thanks with grim determination. It would be a hard journey for sure, but one he was more than willing to embark on. After all, the Theta’s words certainly held the weight of the world.

Before he left, he introduced himself in somber manner. "I am Califf Malem, and I shall never forget you Theta."

The woman simply smiled, for in his voice, she had sensed the fate of one who could stand tall in war. He will certainly make a name for himself in Daemon’s army.

Zina attended to the last person of the fifteen, and by the time she was done, it was almost midnight. Listening to grievances was no easy task, Zina didn’t have it in her to envy any judge.

Straightening her legs, she stood from the rock she had been sitting on since that night. She staggered from a passing dizziness, and Seraph easily caught her. The girl’s eyes were wound up with worry for her mistress as she took in her weary state, but she knew better than anyone that there was no asking the Theta to rest.

For six years, Seraph had watched the Theta slave away with work like someone running against an ill-timed clock. Seeing how much she worked only made Seraph more determined to prove her worth to her.

As far as she was concerned, if she were a bit stronger, then her mistress wouldn’t have to suffer so.

"As usual, secretly send five brams of gold each to the families we attended tonight." Zina spelt the order which she always gave after the Taga meetings.

"It’s already being done." Seraph responded, amazed at how it was that someone so good existed. As far as she was concerned, the likes of her mistress could have only descended from heaven.

"How much is remaining in our coffers?" Zina inquired as a bone deep wariness rooted itself within her.

Grimly, Seraph answered. "Less than two hundred brams of gold."

Zina sighed, the night was no longer young, and yet, it would seem as though she wouldn’t be sleeping anytime soon. Eldric’s unusual request had thrown her off her game, and now, she felt necessarily in a hurry to get things done.

A lot of things.

As if sensing her mistresses’ wariness, Seraph cheerfully spoke in a conspiratorial whisper just as Ablanch trailed some distance behind them.

"As per your orders, all over the capital everyone is already speaking of Daemon NorthSteed being the reincarnation of the great beast wolf.

Contrary to what Seraph expected, the news didn’t seem to impress the Theta who had ordered the very act that played out earlier that night. Instead, brusquely she inquired.

"What of the man who spied on your conversation with the tales man? Any news yet?"

"Nothing yet. It’s been just four hours...."

Deep in thought, Zina mused without thinking. "We need to fill our coffers before we leave."

Two hundred brams of gold would have sounded like a lot of money to Zina six years ago; but now as the Theta of the NorthSteed pack and in view of her numerous responsibilities, it would seem as though she was currently poor.

Just mobilising the plan she had executed that night cost her thousands of brams. From the tales man, to the carefully implanted people in his audience, and then the posters that would later go up that night declaring Daemon NorthSteed the great beast wolf. Running a spy guild was no small feat indeed, and Zina could not afford to leave for the GreenLands no better than a pauper.

Not when there was a lot of unfinished businesses waiting for her.

The so called mysterious strange man that spied on Seraph.

Lykom Lupus.

Her impending next meeting with the Matriachy.

The meeting she must slate with the IceSavage pack’s Theta.

All the treason she must commit to keep the vow she made eight years ago—treasons she must now commit in two weeks.

Surviving Eldric NorthSteed’s incoming wrath before her eventual journey.

The so-called assasinator in her transport details.

Meeting Daemon NorthSteed.

Why did it feel like her shoulders were carrying the weight of the world?

Collecting her thoughts, she decided to think of the only thing she had actual power over. Two weeks... Zina had only two weeks to dig into the mind of the common people and the thing they hold dear to themselves. That pesky thing called belief.

The late Theta’s words filtered through her mind—the balance between superstitious and might. While Eldrid held onto the latter, Zina clung to the latter with all her strength. She had not only vowed to keep herself chaste, but she had kept that vow to shocking lengths. Then three years ago, fortune shined on her and she foresaw the great famine which paved the way for her to amount to more than just being the Theta of the NorthSteed pack.

Now, the whole of the Arctic North revered her and her powers. Her name was widely chanted throughout all the regions whether for good or bad. Yet, it was abundantly clear to her that the quest to gather power was not as easy as she imagined. For all the greatness she amounted to, Eldric took more than half of the credit.

The man was chanted as the divine Arctic Wolf who appointed a divine Theta. Whereas Zina’s meagre achievements could not even be called hers. How pathetic her life was.

But the wind was truly changing. Eldric sought to use his popularity to impose hefty taxes that crippled the entire region. Already, he was never described as a benevolent king; but increasing the taxes made him more of an eyesore.

The war was ravaging them. The rogues were tenacious, content to feed off their own carcasses while continuing to push on with the war. The people were tired, the Alpha they looked up to was content to suck them dry while feasting with his numerous play boys.

Zina knew it would take more than just pointing her staff at Eldric while spewing lies in disguise of prophecy to bring the man down. No, it would take extra and it came at a great cost.

The moment they stepped out of the temple, the cool night air hit Zina’s face, causing her to look up with barely disguised longing. The full moon that hung in the sky brushed against her skin, connecting with her mind in an eerie manner.

Indeed, it is true that there is a power in Zina, but whether it was from the moon goddess or not was something Zina didn’t know of. Tentatively she whispered anew the vow she held dear to herself for six years for the heavens and earth to bear witness.

I, Zina Thralgor, only desire to bring everything back into its rightful place. That, that which I’ve sorely destroyed, be made anew. For this vow, I am willing to abandon my life and all.

As they took the carriage going back to the palace, noise and commotion like no other engulfed them. Zina knew what everyone in the capital could see plastered on the walls as they scrambled to their homes so as not to be caught in the curfew.

Posters bearing paintings of the Great Beast Wolf leading a war. The wolves behind him are like an ant in comparison to the beast whose height is like that of thirty stacked wolves. Standing to his full height, the poster shows a monster lodged in the beast’s strong jaws, while one of his hands is ripping away the body.

Then eerily, a full moon hangs on the sky.

"It has started." Seraph whispered excitedly in the privacy of the carriage. Zina merely smiled, finding it amusing how Seraph carried out her orders without question.

The whispers from outside carried on into the carriage.

The ripper?

The banished prince?!

The gracious late Luna Queen’s son’s sins have been forgiven! He is coming back to finally take the lead!

Is he truly the great beast wolf?!

The Direwolf of the world born of the southern dry blood?!

Zina remembered one of her favourite lines from a book she was fortunate to hear Seraph read out for her. Smiling smugly, she recited it. "And when they ask where my wolf is, I shall tell them to look into their wicked hearts for that is the place where they will find me."
