Chapter 334: Side Story 2: Zelkov Screamers
MOON (Contd)
"Does my father know about this?"
It was quite shameful that in the face of such a big revelation, that was all she could ask. But that was about the only thing Ameneris could afford to say.
Saying any other thing would shatter the composure she had maintained for decades.
The elders reared back, shocked at her line of question. Afterall, to the rest of the world, Ameneris father who was in fact the former Alpha of the Pack was still Alpha and resided at the old pack’s palace.
Whereas in reality, her father was hospitalized at the old palace, while he used his presence to cover the pack that the Pack had a new Alpha for four years now. Not only that, her father sacrificing his well being had also covered the fact that Ameneris was married.
And all of that move had been for one singular reason—to protect the pack and to conserve the generations to come.
Should anything happen, everyone would face her father who was maintaining a faux appearance at the old Palace. Where as she and her husband—the real Alpha—would remain safe.
And yet, that said husband had gone head to....
"We promised never to speak of your father!" The elder whispered harshly. As it is, no one knows the Screamers Pack has a new Alpha or a Luna for that matter! And you know why!"
Ameneris cackled much like a mad woman, her composure finally shattered at that. "You lot have never ceased to amaze me, Elders. So what? My husband dearest didn’t even consult the man who passed his title to him before he shoved his thing into another woman?"
Her husband, not the love of her life, but certainly the man she had been certain she would have grown old with turned to her with eyes brimming with tears. "It was a mistake, Amen."
"A mistake you say?" Ameneris repeated slowly, scoffing at the endearment. "So the boy is how old? Four? That can’t be, so three?"
"He is three, Amen."
"Then it must have happened immediately after our union. Or perhaps, on the day of our wedding."
"I was drunk Amen. Intoxicated. It was such a terrible mistake that your maid had no choice but to flee."
"And now she is back," Ameneris said bitterly, "she should have remained lost forever. She should never have come back!" She screamed, while her stomach chose that moment to ache her terribly.
She was not a bad looking woman. Possessing shiny silver strands of hair and lucious full lips with blue eyes, she had been termed on more than one occasion as a rare beauty. But that was hardly enough to make her accept it was a mistake on her husband’s part.
"Amen, she died during childbirth. We only found out about the son recently."
Ameneris shut her eyes, blinking her tears back.
This was the time for her to be wise, and not the time to dwell on her misfortunes.
Opening her eyes back, she asked. "So this child possesses the scream?"
It was rare... at least in the recent years. Despite her powerful bloodline, she was a skip herself. Although she had hoped a child of hers would at least carry on the scream.
But such hope had extinguished with every issue she lost.
Her husband sat up, obviously glad that such revelation had not been met with a burst of anger and her ire... at least not yet.
"That was how we found him in the first place, Amen. Through his screams. We believe he is a true screamer."
Ameneris nodded grimly. That was good. Carrying on the line, which was most importantly the line of her ancestors, was important.
The origin of the seed didn’t matter.
"Fine. Where’s the boy?" She asked.
The elders looked suspicious. Like they had been expecting a far worse reaction from her and now they were meet with the calm in the storm, they didn’t know what to do about it.
No one made a move and Ameneris rolled her eyes. "You truly think I would murder that child in my condition? Your worries are for naught."
The elders recovered, each of them chuckling nervously. "Bring the child in!" Elder Malem commanded, and an Epsilon entered, a child that looked to be far taller than his age in tow.
"That is the boy Amen." Her husband spoke, such admiration and awe that Ameneris had never see in the man shinning in his eyes.
She was envious... almost.
The boy was apparently three, but he looked like an eight year old by his height. His features were mature as well; with deeply mysterious brown eyes and an equally brown hair.
He sure did look like her husband, but more than that, he had retained the core features of their ancestors.
Even though the ancestral books said that her husband was a distant cousin, Ameneris knew that tracing their bloodlines back showed many times where their lines been entangled together. So it was inescapable that the boy looked so much like her own grandfather; a man who had fought terribly for the dominance of the waning screamer’s pack.
"What is your name?" She asked the boy.
It was said that most children who took onto such height at a young age tended to end up quite short, or of average height at adulthood. Her own father had been like that as well, so the sight of the boy made her smile against her wishes.
"What is your name?" She asked the boy who remained ever unsmiling.
"The boy grew up with hunters, my lady," the Epsilon said when the boy would not speak, "he has no name."
Ameneris leaned down before the boy until they were of the same height, her own pain temporarily ignored.
"In that case following the tradition of the Pack, we shall give him a name that starts with the letter ’Z’," Ameneris managed to say the painful words, all the while smiling like her pride as a woman hadn’t been hurt at all.
And all of that because she had to become a wise woman who only considered the prosperity of the pack.
That was her duty as both Luna and daughter.
She had imagined it herself. If ever her child was to be a girl, she would name her Zina, and if a boy she would name his Zelkov.
Alas, it would seem her dream would come through in a different way. She would name a child alright, but not hers.
"You shall be called Zelkov Screamers then for those who roam with a name will never have a place to call a resting place."
And for the first time, the boy mustered something akin to a smile. He had been give a name after all when he had none, and a home when he couldn’t afford any.
But who would have known that both would be taken away from him too soon, and too harshly.
