Chapter 323: A Backup Plan For The Plan
ZINA
With Zina’s promise and word, Norima Talga discreetly left the room with her cloak pulled up and a newly acquired possession in her keep— Zina’s staff, and a jar of Zina’s blood in her keep.
Zina knew that of all the gambles she had ever made in her life, she had just made the highest one yet and yet, she could hardly find it in her to be fazed. The ritual which she requested of Norima was a most difficult one that required her blood for it to come to fruition.
And after giving out so much of that blood, Zina was deliciously dizzy as she laid on her bed staring at the roof of her ceiling listlessly.
Her right hand never left her stomach. Even though she could not feel anything, her soul was full with just the knowledge of the fact that she was now with her own child.
Blood of her blood and flesh of her flesh.
It wasn’t until ten in the night that Seraph finally brought her the news that she and thousands of people had been waiting for all along. Daemon had finally made his decision after a game of Wolf Chess with the four winners.
As a result of the outcome of the game, Yaren was appointed as Beta, the Sighter as Gamma, Fionna as Delta and Caspian Vampage as the Enforcer. As for the remaining position in the pack which was the role of the Sentinel, the position was reserved for a descendant of the NorthBear House who had served daemon diligently under Yaren’s command ever since he reclaimed his place back in the North.
The only thing that Zina had found truly baffling with the assignment was the appointment of the Sighter as the Gamma of the pack. It was afterall the third most powerful position and a military one at that.
Had the Sighter proven himself to be so indispensable during the wolf chess game that daemon had forgotten his past transgressions or was this another game that he was playing.
Zina knew one thing for sure, for the Sighter to have been appointed to the position in the first place, then it meant that he had proven himself to be deserving of it in every ramification. But that fact alone was not enough for Daemon to forget. And apparently, neither was it enough for the Sighter to escape Daemon’s anger that was sure to fall on him.
Despite having guessed that Daemon must know about his identity and all he had done, the Sighter didn’t seem to be in the least interested to back down and escape when he could. No, the man was still persisting forward fearlessly.
Your mother sent me to you.
Zina definitely had a lot of questions to ask the man. But on the one hand, there was Garuk NorthSteed who was still imprisoned because of the Sighter, and the Ten Million Grams of gold stolen by the man in question.
Zina would only have her turn to ask him questions when Daemo would be done with him, and that was assuming that he would still be breathing when the whole affair would be over.
"So everyone has left the great hall?" Zina asked again just to be sure.
"Mmm... our informant did see everyone leave save for the Sighter... I mean the Gamma, Yar... the Beta and his majesty."
Just as Zina had expected, it would seem it had already started. She sighed, burying herself deeper into the warm embrace of her bed. She would have to trust Daemon on this just as he had asked of her, but despite already knowing that the Sighter was not her true brother, the fact that they were bound by the same Pack and family still made her worry for him.
And afterall, he had saved her life once.
"What of Norima Talga?" she asked after a few moments of silence.
Seraph plopped on the bed, sighing as though she had run one of the most tiring errands ever. "The West Heralder followed her up until the border of the land of the Night Mages. She truly returned back without making a detour. But I still don’t think it wise to entrust her with such a dangerous task, Theta."
Zina simply smiled. "Well done Seraph. You’ve worked so hard."
The maidservant beamed while scratching her brown hair awkwardly, "It’s what I should do, Theta."
Zina eyed her, "For a moment there I was sure you were dramatically fishing for compliments."
"Was it so obvious?" The maidservant asked playfully with one eye shut.
"You might as well have been begging for it," Zina jabbed playfully.
"Thank you gracious Theta for recognizing my hard work,"
"It is what I should do, Seraph." Zina answered in the same manner that she once did, "however there’s one more thing that you must do for me."
The maidservant turned serious, "What is it?"
"Have the North Heralder infiltrate the land of the Night Mages. Should Norima Talga act in a way that is suspicious or goes against the mission we’ve given? Then he should not hesitate in eliminating her."
The cold way those words rolled off her lips should have terrified her, but Zina was without any of that fear.
She had never used the North Heralder for his true skills which was assassination for the main reason that she didn’t possess the kind of heart that was required to carry out such a plan. But the life growing in her belly emboldened her with more guts than she ever thought was possible for her to possess.
Serpah stared at her with slight surprise although Zina could see in the younger woman’s eyes that she wouldn’t hesitate to carry out her orders. They had been together for more than six years, so it went without saying that they implicitly knew each other the best.
"I will do as you’ve said. But Thera, I thought them mission you’ve entrusted Norima Talga with is of great importance."
Zina smiled, looking at the girl dead in the eyes. "No, it’s hardly not important. Whether she is able to perform the retroactive projection spell or not is not of any consequence to me. She’s merely the backup plan of the main plan."
"And what is the main plan?" Seraph asked in confusion.
Zina stared at the girl who recoiled back as it dawned in her eyes. "So the plan is to get the staff away from you?"
"Exactly," Zina muttered while staring at her ceiling anew, "the farther it’s away from me, the better."
Since her presence and that of the staff was required to activate this so called thing her, she would now love to see how anybody would try to make it possible.
