Chapter 304: The Last Werewolves Standing
ZINA
Zina’s carriage was led by Marcus as they journeyed to the Balstid Arena; a high capacity arena that could comfortably house ten thousand people.
Now that her adrenaline has worn off, reality settled in place causing Zina to think of the real matter at hand.
Who and who had qualified for the tournament? And most importantly, who were the people who would make it as Daemon’s subordinate in his role as the Alpha of the NorthSteed Pack and King of the Arctic North?
Before she had left the castle the night before, Zina wasn’t spared the whisperings of gambling servants who were making their debts. Some betted on Yaren, others betted on the representatives of the Four Houses that had managed to make it up to the second test of the second stage of the tournament.
That was as far as Zina’s knowledge reached. Being that she left for the Temple just before the conclusion of ten second test, she was unaware of the contestants that had made it past the Room of Whispers.
She had been in too much of a time pickle to have asked Seraph, and now she couldn’t help but worry if Fionna was among the successful contestants. Since she would be finding out soon, she decided there was no need for her to worry so instead she concentrated on the jostling of her carriage as they inches closer and closer to the Balstid Arena.
Before she knew it, they were already there, and it didn’t take time for her to understand why the streets had been usually silent during their journey.
It seemed everyone was here.
Every single person that resided in the Capital had come to witness who would ultimately make it as the Beta, Delta, Gamma, and Executor of the pack. And the sound of the lid cheering and hollering was enough to deaf an already blind man.
"Such excitement and ruckus," Marcus muttered with narrowed eyes while he outstretched his hand as support for Zina.
Zina climbed down the carriage with his help, all the while her eyes rooted on the stream of people that were making their way into the arena through the broad entrance that suddenly looked way too small considering the number of people trooping in.
An Epsilon led their carriage and horse away while Marcus led the way to a side entrance, reserved only for high ranking werewolves. There, she met Alpha Kairos and the witch woman that always stuck to his side. For a reason she was well aware of her, her breath hitched in her throat at the sight of them.
She was sure, afterall, that Daemon had tasked the duo with finding the masked man. And if they were already back, then that could only mean that Alpha Kairos had succeeded in his mission.
"Well well, if it’s not the Theta sans future Luna with Beta DireWolf...." Kairos greeted flamboyantly while taking Zina’s hand and pressing a kiss at the back of her palm.
Zina felt Marcus stiffen beside her, but all her response to Kairos’ bold greeting was a smile of her own in the hopes that she would be able to extract some sort of information from the very elusive man.
"You’re here already, Alpha Kairos."
"Just call me Kairos, Theta. And yes I am back. I would like to use this opportunity to thank the Theta for agreeing to speak good things about my pack in your name."
Zina smiled tightly, remembering the request that had come from Daemon. He had made it seem like the decision was up to Zina, but she had known that he had struck a deal with Alpha Kairos... of which said deal involved a condition on Kairos part that Zina speak some good words about his pack in order to allay the brewing tension between Alpha Kairos’ pack and the Matriarchy.
"Since you’re back, that must mean you’ve good news for the Alpha King."
A mischievous glint shone in the man’s blue eyes. "I’ve more than good news, Theta."
Indeed, of course he had found the identity of the masked man.
Suddenly, Zina’s palm felt clammy with sweat. "Pray tell, who is the man?"
"Hmm... you know I can’t tell you that, Theta regardless of your relationship with the Alpha King. But just know that this stage of the combat is about to get even more interesting."
The wicked glint in his eyes was all the proof that Zina needed to know that Kairos wasn’t playing around. In fact, he had not so subtly hinted that the perpetrator was amongst the contestants.
But that didn’t deter her for she made one final attempt to reason it out with Kairos. "Even though the threat that was made was against me. Surely I’ve the same right as Daemon to know who the man is?"
Kairos grinned, "in due time, Theta." And with that, the man swept his way inside, leaving Zina behind.
Zina too, checked herself in and made her way to the Dais. She reasoned that even if she found out a few minutes earlier than Daemon, it might not really make a difference. But all her reasoning crumbled when she remembered the dream she had... the one with her mother, the man she naturally suspected was her father, and the bastard boy with brown eyes....
...brown eyes that had felt strangely familiar, and yet distant to her.
Where had she seen the brown eyes from? The harder she thought about it, the more her headache increased.
She reached the Dais just in time to witness Kairos greeting Daemon who was lunged against a soft chair lazily while swirling a glass of wine in his fingers.
Unlike her, Daemon’s bored expression didn’t betray any curiosity as to the information Kairos might have for him, nor did he once ask Kairos about the matter as the blue eyed Alpha took a seat by his side.
Zina moved forward and greeted Daemon as well.
"Greetings Alpha King."
Daemon smiled smugly, "did you have a good night’s rest?" He asked with eyes brimming with mischief. Zina had a thought that Daemon probably came to her room that morning only to find her sleeping. She was immediately overcome with a blush at the thought.
"Yes, I had a good night’s rest."
Daemon grinned, "If you had such a good night’s sleep, then you must have seen my gift for you."
Zina simply smiled in response, before she took her seat by Daemon’s left side. From the high Dais, she could clearly see the last few werewolves standing, and Fionna, although looking thoroughly exhausted, had made it and stood proudly amongst the men.
