Chapter 288: Furiously Beautiful
MOON
It was either Basil was a true psychopath beyond redemption, or perhaps he lacked the basic sense to process the underlying threat in Fionna’s words for all his response was raising his hand to strike her.
Fionna caught the fist that was flying to her, her expression darkening while she narrowed her eyes narrowed at him.
Basil on the other hand seemed slightly taken aback by how the woman before him easily caught his punch as one would do when swatting away a very annoying fly.
"I know I said I like to touch men," Fionna spoke with a voice that might have as well spelt doom, "but I am no voyeurist. I prefer my activities private and without an audience. Only that way will I not hold back from raining down holy destruction on you."
Basil smacked his lips, his excitement gearing up. His eyes lit up with acceptance of the promise of a challenge before him.
"I can see you’re no Novice Red Sister despite your young age." He spoke with a long drawn out drawl, "So are you Amateur then? Or perhaps, a Red Hand?"
Fionna flung his fist away like one would paper much to the annoyance of the man. Ignoring his simmering anger, she turned to face Yaren whose eyes were narrowed at her.
"I am sure you do not enjoy this unruly crowd of airheads anymore than I do. Can we step to a corner, I have something to say to you."
Reluctantly, Yaren followed her to desolate corner although he sensed that someone was following them. A familiar someone at that.
"I feel manipulated and violated tonight." Yaren grunted the moment they were alone.
Fionna flung her ponytail behind her, hands on her waist. "So you figured out my game."
"How could I not when you’ve made it so obvious," Yaren spoke, his eyes appraising her suspiciously, "do you think it would do you any good to be the target of everyone."
Fionna grinned. "My Lord you’re the target of everyone and you seem to be doing just fine. I am sure my new popularity as your woman would open doors for me that would have ordinarily remained shut."
"Why are you doing this?"
"For the same reason you’re here too."
Yaren scoffed. "Why do you think I am here?" He asked harshly.
"To become the Beta of the NorthSteed Pack, no?" Fionna answered carefully as if she was thinking over the words. "Do not worry though, unlike those idiots back there, I am aware of your strength and sure you will become the Beta of the NorthSteed Pack. For that reason, I shall make sure we are not matched for the final combat."
Yaren chuckled, eyes filled with disbelief. "You’re aware of my strength? You think this tournament requires strength?"
Fionna changed her pose, her hands crossed akimbo over her chest. Her eyes appraised Yaren with curiosity.
"If not strength, then what is it? You seem to have insights that I don’t possess, care to share with me?"
"You must think me stupid enough to fall for such a blatant bait." Yaren growled, taking a step back from Fionna who was unexpectedly right in his face.
Fionna smiled broadly, "Yet again my lord proves how smart he is. Indeed, I have approached you for some answers. I am sure you’ve an insight on what the three tests would look like."
Yaren’s face darkened from anger. "And why would you think that? Because I must be in league with his majesty?" He finished, voice tinged with annoyance and contempt.
"My Lord, even if you were not so prideful that you would rather die than ask your half-brother for the key to the tests, I also know his majesty would never tarnish his honor or your honor by revealing such to you."
"So why do you think I have the answers you seek?" Yaren gritted.
Fionna took a step toward him meaningfully, "Because no one knows his majesty as well as you do. You, the boy who grew up with him and who was banished with him."
Yaren narrowed his eyes at her while he watched her cover the space between them with legs classed by her knee high boots, "So you think I should know his mind as well?"
"It would be disappointing if you didn’t. I am not well read, my lord. Just as the NorthClaw heir pointed out, I am simply a seductress who plays underhanded tricks. If you help me with what I ask for, I will surely repay you in the future."
"I would have asked how you plan to repay me if not for the fact that I do not have the answers that you seek." Yaren answered with a shrug of his shoulders, and then turned to leave.
Panic colored Fionna’s purple as she scrambled after him. If not any other thing, she was sure she needed to know the key to the three tests and how to overcome them. And that was because she suspected that at least two out of three of them would be on mental manipulation of some sorts.
Already, being a Red Sister came with the kind of trauma that could be exposed under a powerful enough hypnosis spell. Red Sisters were just heartless tools that covered the decay with them, and in her case, her decay and trauma was way too much to ignore.
And they might be just what would bring her down in the second tournament. If care wasn’t taken, she would never get the opportunity to get to the Combat proper.
"Does it require mental fortitude?!" Fionna screamed after him, trying hard to keep away the frustration from her voice and failing at the same time.
Yaren paused abruptly, turning to face her squarely.
"You’ve spied on us enough. Come out already...." He snarled abruptly, causing Fiona to pause at first from confusion. A second later the words sank in properly causing her to look around while on guard.
From behind one of the gargoyles in the waiting arena, a man that was unfamiliar to her but seemed familiar to Yaren stepped out. He possessed an air of ease, and he wore those kind of goofy smiles Fionna only saw on the faces of men that never had to lift their hand for a thing, nor did they ever work hard for the food they were supposed to eat.
The man approached her, while Fionna didn’t bother to hide the urge she suddenly had to wipe away the smile from him.
"Lord Yaren, I must say you’ve quite the taste in women, however this is no way to treat a beautiful woman." the man drawled with an easy voice, and then he did the most bizarre thing.
He took Fionna’s palm in his, raising it to his lips. "Might I just say that your beauty is furiously blinding."
And then he kissed the back of her palm.
