Chapter 284: Evaluation Report

ZINA

Cuddled by Daemon throughout the entire night, all of Zina’s worries and nightmares naturally dispersed as though they were scared of the man in whose embrace she found solace in.

Morning came with a peace like no other, and Zina wondered if her fears could be said to be justified when Daemon possessed an enigmatic presence that naturally chased away all of her demons.

But her fears had indeed been justified. However, instead of the justifiably scared woman she had been the night before, the morning that came saw her reborn as a new woman that courageously took on the challenge of remaining by Daemon’s side come rain, come sunshine.

Her new decision wasn’t born out of a blatant disregard for her visions and the persistent prophecies. No, her decision was born out of the desire to fight and remain by Daemon’s side as a real family. Having his children, courageously navigating their way into rule, and being together forever.

Since he had vowed to protect her, she too would never fail him. Even if it would cost her her life.

Her eyes fluttered open, and she forcibly squinted against the rays of sunlight that was streaming into the room. The weather in the North was becoming more and more bizarre with each passing day. Just yesterday night it had been snowing hard, and now, the sun was melting it all away.

Daemon’s breath fanned her face, his hand gripping her waist while his eyes were shut as he slept the most peaceful Zina had ever seen him. Lying there with her, he was at his most vulnerable, at the same time, he was at his most beautiful.

The dark circles that surrounded his eyes told the tale of the many sleepless nights that he had... sleepless nights that Zina wished she could cure him of. She knew he had trouble sleeping, and it gladdened her heart whenever he slept off when he was with her.

It told her that she was his safe Haven whom he trusted with his body and soul. And wasn’t that just enough to even move her heart?

Zina smiled, refusing to move lest the motion woke him. So she laid perfectly still, watching the fall and rise of his chest, the gentle way his long lashes fluttered, and his sound and even breathing. Strands of his dark hair fluttered over his eyes, obscuring part of his features in a way that made him even more beautiful.

She strained her hearing and started to silently count his heartbeat beat by beat. She was at number two thousand five hundred heartbeats when his eyes snapped open abruptly. He seemed to process the time by the stream of sunlight into the room for he bolted up abruptly, shrugging his cloak.

"What time is it?" He groaned, seeming to regret that he had ’overslept’.

"I don’t know but I’m sure it’s not yet 8pm for the second tournament."

"You should have awoken me." He grunted while Zina rolled her eyes.

"I would never do that."

Daemon drew back. "What?"

"You do not sleep enough or at all as it stands so whenever you do find respite to sleep, believe me when I say I might even let you sleep through more than your morning ceaseless meetings with your council."

He chuckled, leaning down on the bed while Zina sat up to meet his gaze.

"Perhaps others Zina, but I do not need to sleep as much as I just did."

"Sleep as much as you just did?" Zina’s tone was incredulous, "you only slept for three hours or so!"

Daemon seemed to think deeply about her statement although Zina wondered why that was the case until he said, "well, that was because a certain eager woman kept me up all night with activities that would make even the most prudent woman blush all the way to her toes."

Zina blushed on cue, but she didn’t believe her blush reached all the way to the tips of her toes. It would seem as though she was no longer as prudent.

"Do not divert from the topic at hand Daemon NorthSteed. You need to take care of yourself more!" she chided him, assuming the stern voice she learnt the night before to use on him. Not like it worked... at least so far.

"Mmm. You can submit a report to me and I shall contemplate your request after due consultation with my council." He drawled, his eyes taunting her playfully.

Zina bolted from the bed, disregarding her partial nudity. Daemon easily caught her waist and dragged her body to his.

"You’re becoming more and more....!" She stumbled on her words, not knowing where to begin talking sense into him in the first place. Since it seemed Daemon was far from interested in taking care of himself, then she will do it for him.

True to her thoughts he busied himself with peppering kisses over her slightly exposed chest. She was wearing a sheer, see through silk that would make her want to bury herself alive should any other person see her in it. The silk material was low cleavage, and Daemon took advantage of the fact.

His lips trailed up to her neck, only coming to a stop at her ears. "How was my performance last night?" He whispered.

Zina giggled, smacking him hard on the chest. "You just bolted from my bed as though you have something more important to attend to. And now you won’t even spare me your lewd self."

He smiled that devilish smile that shot straight to her core. "Hmmm... well I wouldn’t be able to concentrate at work if I don’t get an evaluation report from you."

"Surely you do not expect me to seriously answer your question?"

The mischief in his eyes was all the answer she needed. The man actually expected her to answer him before he left her room.

Zina attempted to put on a serious facade for fear that her face would turn beet red. "It was okay." She mumbled, the words sounding even muffled to her hearing.

Daemon leaned closer to her. "What was that? I can’t hear you?"

Zina cringed. Was the man not gunning for her very embarrassing death?

She leaned into him as well, voice still a whisper she repeated. "It was okay."

"You’ve to be louder than that, Zina. I truly cannot hear you."

"I said it was fine!" She finally screamed, exasperated and unable to escape his hold on her waist. So she had no other choice but to stand still and burn in her decadent shame.

Daemon actually had the guts to frown despite making her answer such a question. "Just fine? I would have to work harder it would seem."

She could swear that steam started coming out of her ears at the same time. That was the only signal she needed to know that the tips of her ears were a deep shade of red just as her face.

Daemon tipped her face up, leaning in to kiss her. It was a short but still pleasurable kiss and Zina made sure to savor every single moment of it.

Reluctantly, Zina was forced to separate from him while he made to leave her room. It occurred to her that Daemon had not mentioned a single thing about the events of yesterday.

When he had mentioned it in the night, Zina wasn’t interested because she had been so scared of her symbolic presence in his life. Now that fear was no longer present, she was beginning to get some of her priorities straight.

"What about the man?" Zina asked anxiously, causing Daemon to stop short of exiting her room.

He turned slowly, facing her. "What about him?" He asked instead, his face a mask of nonchalance and something more. Like he knew exactly what she was about to say to him.
