Chapter 270: Center Of His Empire

ZINA

Once the door was opened, it felt as though Zina had been forced away from a world of nothingness to a world where everything existed at the same time.

A lot of sensations greeted her at the same time, and the fact that the building that appeared to be on the verge of destruction wasn’t like that in reality stood stark before her. Whether it be the sight that assaulted her eyes or the sounds that assaulted her ears, there was perfect evidence that the building was very much alive.

Contrary to how the building looked from the outside, inside just before the entrance was full of activity and life. As Daemon tugged her further inside the building past the reception, the sound of abacus beads clashing against each other was like the sound of some otherworldly music to her ears.

It was as if there were an army of people operating the stringed instrument, and truth to what her ears were hearing, her eyes did indeed behold such battalion of people who were operating the item intently while their fingers hovered over parchment and parchment of papers that were so long it could form a royal entry carpet.

They were of both sexes—both men and women. And save for the sound of the abacus’ clashing together, there was absolutely not any other sound. Not of them talking, not of them coughing, not even of them whispering. Save for their calculator, the room was silent like a graveyard.

Tables were lined side by side against each other, and for each table, a chair was set against it. Each person however, had one table to themselves that allowed them both mobility and space to perform all their duties. And despite her and Daemon’s entrance into the room, not for once did they look up to behold them.

It was as if they were spell bound by their work.

Somewhere at the end of the room, a huge board was mounted. It possessed drawings of tally sticks and words in the language of the Mountain Wolf that Zina couldn’t comprehend. An old man stood by the board, chalk in hand while he crossed off the tallies and noted what Zina assumed were his findings in a scroll that spread on a large empty table.

It would seem as though the man was transcribing the findings of the calculators, but since Zina was yet to see any of the abacus users stand, she was truly curious as to how the man got their findings in the first place.

She immediately got her answers when an errand boy zapped past through the army of human calculators, stopping by each table to pick what Zina assumed were completed scrolls. The boy would then proceed to the old man to drop his findings.

"What is this?" Zina asked in a voice that was filled with awe and held all of her surprise.

"Advanced Abacus that can make complex calculations." He answered instead even though Zina was sure he was aware of what she was inquiring into in the first place.

Facing him squarely, eyes conveying her true awe, she repeated. "I mean what is this place? What are these people?"

At this, Daemon grinned while spreading his hands flamboyantly. "This is what has always been at the centre of the empire that I intend to build." He said, and those words that might have sounded abhorrently simple to any other person held such profoundness that Zina easily grasped.

Turning away from him to look anew at the sight before her eyes, Zina nodded slowly. "Do you mean to tell me that here in this dilapidated building lies your power?"

Daemon turned serious, facing her solemnly. "Whether it be my information network, or my finances, or my plans for the future, all of them are here, Zina."

Sins was truly at a loss for words. "Then why are you showing me all of this? Even if it’s to prove your love to me, surely this is much?" She finished uncomfortably as she thought back to her first meeting Daemon back at the GreenLands.

Back then, and even now, Daemon had always appeared as someone who was a strong force to reckon. Like the world was underneath his feet and he could move it however he pleased.

That had always been how he appeared to her, and that fact had never changed for once. Not even when she got closer to him had he appeared to be any less than the image of a Demigod that was permanently etched to her memory.

But now... it felt like she was being shown all of his weaknesses. And that amount of trust extended towards her was scary to say but the least... just as it was exhilarating, and way too empowering.

"Do you think I am showing you this just to prove my love to you?" Daemon said, and Zina had a feeling that she was having the most serious conversation she would ever have with him.

Relaxing her tensed shoulders, she asked carefully. "Then why are you showing me all this?"

"Because you’re going to be my family." He answers sharply like the answer had been on the tips of his tongue all the while. "Do you know what it means to be my family, Zina? Do you know what it means to be my wife? Do you understand what it would mean for you to live out the remainder of your life as the Luna Queen NorthSteed?"

As if she had been set up in a high pavilion where only the harshest criminals were interrogated, Zina froze, unable to know where from she should start to answer him. If ever there was a weakness that she possessed on her own, then it would be her lack of knowledge on what family truly meant. And there lies the difference between her and Daemon.

For even though Daemon suffered under family, he still had reasons to cherish it. The evidence was in his relationship with Yaren and Marcus. Her on the other hand had never had a reason to cherish it—not when she had been betrayed and stabbed at the back by said family.

So what did it mean to be married to Daemon? She had always thought the answer to that question was quite simple, but the way he asked it made Zina feel like the answer she would proffer to him was sure to be the wrong one.

So surprisingly, in the face of such simple questions, she found herself unable to utter a single word.

"Zina WolfKnight?" He called her in a voice that was strange to her hearing when she was silent for a long time and didn’t answer.

Her head snapped up at him to behold his blank stare. Or perhaps his stare wasn’t bland, maybe she was making it up in her head.

"Yes?" She managed to squeak like a mouse encircled by the big wild cat. She was the mouse of course, and Daemon everly retained his title as the big wild cat.

Zina didn’t know what he saw in her expression, but his eyes turned soft like melting butter as he spoke in a voice that was almost hypnotical. "Listen to me now and listen very carefully...."
