Chapter 268: The Only Unforgivable Thing
ZINA
Zina couldn’t deny it, that from the moment she spoke to her mother in the projection, she found herself imagining a different world, but in this world, it felt like she was utterly greedy.
For despite the fact that she was grateful to have Daemon in her life, she found herself dissatisfied with having him alone. No, instead she imagined that she also had her mother too, and she could imagine her title of the abandoned one falling off literally.
It was greed on her own part, she knew it, and yet she was unable to fight against it.
She knew she should never have acted on her greed by sending the North Heralder to the Iron Coast to investigate about the Screamers Pack and any possible remnant, and yet she did. It had at least become apparent that the mind might stay as logical as possible, but the heart yearned for what it wanted and hers yearned for home.
Daemon’s fingers came up to her cheeks while his eyes enraptured hers, drawing her into the web of the mist ultimate spell in the world. A spell called love.
Zina gave up on her control willingly, allowing herself to be trapped in this spell of his. She felt his fingers flicker at wetness against her cheeks, and she watched as his eyes shined with amusement while his lips curved in a devilish smile.
"Why do you cry?" He asked the question like he was amusedly offended that she would dare shed a tear while sitting beside him who was the definition of all things enigmatic and mysterious.
"I...I don’t know."
"I shall find your mother for you if that is what has caused this damned tear to roll down your cheek." He said without stuttering... without losing a breath. His words sounded so confident that Zina didn’t know when yet another tear rolled down her cheeks.
"You will?" She said breathlessly, her eyes searching his dark orbs for a hint of dishonesty but instead finding all his frankness for her in a pool of dark stars.
"Of course I will." He said with a chuckle, wiping the other errant tear, "although I must say, your tears fill me with the need to murder right now whoever has a hand in creating them in the first place."
Zina wanted to laugh, but her throat was all choked up from a number of emotions that she couldn’t begin to name.
"But I am afraid," She found herself admitting instead, "it is my fear that causes my tears to flow endlessly."
"What do you have to be afraid of when I am here?" He said seriously while tilting her head up.
Meanwhile, the world around them disappeared. It was as if they were floating in a world of their own, like they weren’t in a moving carriage in the first place.
Zina found managing a smile in spite of herself. "Have I ever told you you have a way with words?"
"Well you’re telling me now aren’t you. But don’t evade the question Zina, what do you have to be afraid of when you have me here?"
"My dreams," She answered without missing a breath, "sometimes they are ominous, sometimes they are without evident meaning, sometimes they come in colours like white and red, and sometimes, they are without any sense. But they do scare me, Daemon. So much more than I care to admit."
His lips smashed against hers hard before the last words barely spilled from her lips. He tasted like mint and leather, a heady combination that left Zina’s senses reeling. The kiss was fierce, possessive, and all-consuming, as if Daemon sought to devour her fears and doubts whole.
Zina’s lips parted, allowing him to deepen the kiss, and she felt herself melting into his embrace. The carriage, the snow, the world outside receded, leaving only the two of them, lost in the labyrinth of their passion.
As they briefly broke apart for air, Daemon’s eyes blazed with an intensity so fierce Zina was lost in them. His voice low and husky he spoke, "Then allow me into your dreams so I can fight your demons. Or better still, let me be the only thing you ever dream of."
His lips brushed against hers once more, a gentle, reassuring touch while Zina smiled while a fierce blush overtook her face.
"Aren’t you the image of a very charming and possessive man? Only you would be bold enough to be jealous of my dreams." She said in an attempt to take off the edge from how serious the atmosphere between them had gotten.
Daemon was obviously not one to be distracted easily, and his eyes hardened as if to convey the same. "Has your sight been bothering you recently?" He asked, his voice serious while his eyes searched hers for the truth.
As usual, his ever keen eyes were the same, and his observation was to the point. "Not so much."
"Not so much?" He repeated with a frown, "I heard you summoned a seer from the GreenLands, have you been bothered by your visions?"
Zina rolled her eyes. Of course he knew about Moon, not like Zina ever wanted to keep it a secret for him for the matter.
"Seeing visions is not a bother for someone like me, Daemon. I believe you’re getting it all wrong."
"Then what is a bother for you?"
"Not seeing anything at all. Being so blind to even matters about myself. Like this morning, I dreamt about my mother. But before I could make sense of the vision, I was woken up from my sleep. Not seeing the dream to the end is the only thing that truly bothers me. Especially not understanding a thing about what I see."
Before Zina could be forced to explain more on things that even she herself didn’t quite understand, the carriage came to a halt signifying that they had reached their destination. Relieved, she began to come down but Daemon tugged her back.
"If you need help, then I shall have Melwyn at your disposal."
Zina was confused. "Who is Melwyn?"
"She is the sorcerer I believe you saw by Alpha Kairos’ side."
Zina tried to remember. "The woman with dark hair and murky eyes? She’s a sorcerer?" Zina asked, quite surprised although it hadn’t been entirely unexpected.
But Daemon seemed to be angry. Gripping her arm, although not painfully, he spoke. "Zina, no matter what form your problem comes in, the only unforgivable thing is you holding it back from me and not telling me a thing. Whether it be about your powers or any other thing no matter how small, you must promise that you always tell me when you’re bothered."
