Chapter 264: Out Of Your Hair Soon

FIONNA

"What is your name?"

"The Sighter."

"Where are you from?"

"The Iron Coasts."

"How old are you?"

"Thirty-five."

"Why do you want Zina?"

"To protect her."

"From what exactly?"

"From the world, and herself."

"Don’t you think that perhaps, her life has been perfect until you came into the picture? Can’t you see how much his majesty adores and protects her."

"Perfection is most often the most terrible illusion."

"Who exactly are you to her?"

"Someone who failed her."

"And why are you doing this to me?"

"You’re just an unfortunate casualty, Fionna."

Fionna had done the same thing over and over again ever since the first stage of the tournament ended... asking the Sighter questions about everything that she could think of.

Some of her questions he skillfully evaded, while some, he surprisingly answered directly.

Of all the ways Fionna had imagined her life would take a turn though, she didn’t imagine that while she was running away from one problem, she would inadvertently dig herself deeper into another problem.

Talks of treason and the possibility that she was dealing with a mad man had immediately settled in her veins like ice spikes with sharp edges sharpened by her flaming anger. But never did she imagine that burrowing herself deeper into the mad man’s matter would lead to the very ridiculous situation she currently found herself in.

She, in the same room with none other than Zoric Sofyr, the rogue son of Madlea Sofyr—the man whom she had seduced and then assassinated. Talk of twists of fate, although as far as shame went, Fionna was hardly ashamed of her part in that mission.

Not even when Zoric growled through his gagged lips and tugged against the chains that bound him in the Sighter’s room at some random inn which had mysteriously become her place of abode ever since the previous night when the Red Sisters had circled her for the crime of killing one of their own.

"How did you find this man that even his majesty was hunting down?" Fionna asked as blandly as she ever did whenever she asked the Sighter questions.

The Sighter on his part has been sharpening his knife for over one hour, only stopping to dip the sharp blade inside water before he continued with his thing.

"By chance." He answered while the blade continued to grate against the sharpener stone. Fionna rolled her eyes at the very satisfying answer while her eyes followed the motions of the blade sparking against the sharpener.

"You’re truly a fearless one are you not?" She mused, unable to take just the gritting sound.

"Are we all not?"

"The time you should have saved her was years ago when she was still with the WolfKnights," Fionna said with a voice that dripped with surprising animosity, "now you’re too late. This is the wrong time."

The motion of the knife against the sharpener stopped while the Sighter turned his eyes to her.

"True. I shall pay for my sins if not coming on time, but for now, I must do what I must."

"His majesty will haunt and hunt you." Fiona spat hatefully, desperate to break free of the madness that was taunting her life. So much for steering her life into safety, she just had to meet a mad man.

The man simply chuckled and the sound was like that of death itself. "I believe he has already started to hunt me, Fionna."

Fionna shut her eyes praying for strength. "Then why are we still playing this game? Give it all up already." She gritted, honestly tired. She couldn’t remember the last time she had been strung up tight to the extent she was now; from hunting the four objects, to encountering the Red Sister and killing her, and then to going through an harsh interrogation that could have led to something worse if not for Zina’s interference.

How could she not be tired after all that mess?

The Sighter, obviously not sharing her despair, smiled instead. Again, it was like an avenging angel of death smiling; even doing the least of remotely normal things didn’t make the Sighter look any human as he should be.

As expected, he said blandly, "Why leave the game when the grande finale has just arrived? Have you not been told that is abhorrently rude? One would think that you’re playing the role of the sore loser before your loss actually arrives."

Did the man just subtly insult her? Well, not so subtly if Fionna could still get and understand said insult.

She simply sighed, choosing to not say more while submerging herself in the silence of their lack of words, and in the scraping of his knife against the sharpener.

Zoric, who had been struggling under his bounds, seemed to pass out after some time after seeing that no one was willing to skate him any attention. Fionna stewed in her suspicions of the fact that the Sighter had not been exactly forthcoming with very important information about himself.

After about an hour passed, he broke the silence by saying. "The second stage of the tournament will be happening soon and it will be in combat, although not in the traditional manner."

Fionna took some time before she said. "And how have you come about that information?"

"Just some conventional eavesdropping." He said

Conventional eavesdropping? Fiona could already imagine all the unconventional ways his eavesdropping had been.

"You disappeared briefly yesterday night, don’t tell me you visited the Castle."

"Since you don’t want me to say that, naturally I will obey your orders."

Fionna chuckled at the ridiculousness of his response. "Of course you’ve done something very unconventional."

"I am not as bad as you’ve made me to be."

"Ha ha ha... am I supposed to believe that or pity you as a result?"

"All of the above?"

"Dream on."

He chuckled, still sharpening his knife. "Don’t worry, I will be out of your hair soon." He finished in a foreboding tone.
