Chapter 248: Suspects & Theories

DAEMON

"You can now meet with Alpha Prince Garuk."

Daemon certainly didn’t feel like meeting with anyone that night. He casually flipped through the book before him, asking, "have you settled

him in already?"

Shadow nodded slowly. "I have, although he wouldn’t stop causing a ruckus. Alpha Prince Falcon too won’t stop asking that he appear before you."

"What a pair of trouble," Daemon tsk, not amused in the least by the two developments, "I shall not be seeing any of them tonight though. I find I am not in the mood for it."

"You do not look like you’re in the mood for anything else for that matter," Shadow observed, his grainy eyes on Daemon. "When was the last time you slept?"

Daemon paused abruptly in the middle of flipping to another page. He smiled shrewdly, then proceeded to close the book. Between him and Zina’s full activity last night, he couldn’t quite remember the last time he had slept well. All his worries seemed to haunt him everywhere he went, and pretending to sleep by Zina’s side whenever she woke in the morning was not helping him anymore.

It was one of the reasons why he was grateful for her absence that night. The gods knew he could no longer pretend that he was normal in that area. And Shadow knew the insomniac part of him well hence why he was slightly surprised that the man was inquiring about it in the first place

"Surely you’re not expecting an answer to that question?" Daemon said coolly. Shadow was not like Marcus or Yaren to him... no, the man had taken the semblance of a parental role in his life not like he would admit it. So suffice to say, Shadow got to have many passes that he wouldn’t normally accord his brothers... again, not like he would admit it.

"You look far more gaunt than usual. It tells me that you’ve been shouldering a burden that not even Marcus or Yaren are aware of." Shadow said not taking his eyes off Daemon for once.

Daemon relaxed into his seat. Only Shadow would know of something like that.

"I wouldn’t say I’m keeping it from them. In fact, I have just summoned Yaren to ask him of the very same thing."

"What is it, Alpha?" Shadow pressed forward, showing no signs of backing out from that particular inquiry.

"As you know, someone has been playing hide and seek games with me. Sending me a tongue engraved with words, and then sending me a ransom letter if it could be called that."

"So this is about the man who wants your mate?" Shadow said bluntly, causing Daemon to chuckle at the frankness of his expression.

"Everything’s been about him lately, Shadow."

"I can see that on your face. You must have spent every waking hour you had on your hands to try and track down who the person is."

Daemon nodded in response, although he did wonder what on earth Shadow saw on his face that had the man that worried. He hoped as hell that Zina wouldn’t see whatever it is.

"So what have you found about him?" Shadow asked, his beady eyes peering into his.

"I finally have some theories together with a list of possible names." Daemon drawled, rubbing at his face as his frustration over his current situation threatened to freeze his blood. "I have reasons to believe that maybe this person could be using someone close to me... manipulating them into doing their bidding."

"So you think this person might be using either Yaren or Marcus?" Shadow asked with a voice tinged with slight accusation.

Daemon chuckled. "I do think so," he answered sharply, "However not in the manner you think. This manipulation could be subtle at worse, indirect at best."

"What are your theories?"

Daemon clicked his tongue against his teeth, deep in thought. He stood from his chair, admiring the full moon that hung in the air. "There’s this man in Yaren’s group who is among the long list of people I suspect...." Daemon trailed off, distracted by the sight of the Temple which he could easily spot out from that part of his window.

The towering citadel was like a beacon of colored lights in the middle of the capital. He wondered what Zina was doing, her guards had reported that she had been in the opaque shrine, refusing to take a step out from the room.

"Who is this man?" Shadow asked ever the beacon of patience itself.

Distractedly, Daemon answered. "His first name is Caspian, his last name is Vampage."

"Someone from the Vampage Pack?" Shadow asked in a gruff voice. "Is that not the pack of your mate’s first chance mate."

Daemon smiled still gazing out of his window. He was actually impressed, "Excellent memory, Shadow."

"But being connected to the Theta in such a vague manner is not enough grounds to suspect him."

"You’re right, after all Caspian is just a bastard of the pack and not a true born son like his legitimate brother, Jacen Vampage. But he also lodged at the inn same as the one the man who had his tongue cut off was lodged at."

This gave Shadow a start. "That is too much of a coincidence now."

"Exactly what I thought, Shadow. And somehow this Vampage bastard ends up at Yaren’s group; I heard he almost talked off my poor brother’s ears."

Shadow frowned, the lines of his face drawing together. "You think the Gambler could be in on this? By strategically putting the enemy in the same group as those close to you?"

Daemon turned to face Shadow squarely. He shrugged, "maybe, maybe not... it really doesn’t matter to me."

"So this is the Yaren theory... What about the Marcus theory? He is not a part of the tournament so how could he be involved?"

"But the Red Hand is part of the tournament, and Marcus acted in a supervisory role."

Shadow’s eyes darkened. "Is there something more between the two of them? I mean the Red Hand and Marcus?"

Daemon was amused, "I assume not although Marcus well pretended as though he didn’t know who I spoke of when I mentioned his woman."

Shadow frowned, "Marcus is not that type of man, Daemon."

"I know," Daemon said in a frosty voice, although he was hardly angry... just annoyed. "But I’m sure Marcus knows the Red Hand although not like I’ve ever been interested in finding out the details of their relationship."

Shadow seemed taken aback as if he just realized something, "hold on, how does the Red Hand tie into all of this? Is she one of your suspects slash theory? Was she staying at the inn too?"

"Yes to your second question and no to your third question. As for your first question, she’s one my suspects indeed. She certainly possesses the skills to take away a man’s tongue and infiltrate my castle. Besides, she seems to be annoyingly close to Zina..."

Daemon clenched his fists at that. He didn’t know the deal between Zina and Fionna, but he was well convinced that his mate didn’t know a danger sign when she saw one. Did she even understand the true extent of depraved things that the Red Sisters committed? Did she even know how much it must have taken someone as young as Fionna to rise to the position she was currently in?

Not even the fact that it seemed the Red Hand was running away from the Red Sisters was enough to allay his apprehension over the surprising relationship she had with his mate.

"It seems you’ve more things to say?" Shadow probed, his eyes resting intently on Daemon.

"Indeed. More than the Red Hand, there’s a certain person I suspect...." He trailed while Shadow’s eyes seemed to urge him to complete his words.

Daemon himself mulled over the name that hung on the tip of his lips; the man was a strange variable as far as his findings went, but the fact that he had been in the same group as Fionna coupled with the fact that said group performed as the second best sealed his suspicions.

Grimly, he continued. "...it’s a man they call the Sighter."
