Chapter 235: To Fight Harder For Her

Chapter 235: To Fight Harder For Her

DAEMON

"You’re both dismissed for now. Have the core members of your houses know that they will be moving to the Ice Palace permanently. I shall be anticipating a more put together report from you. Trying to piece together your information gives me a bad headache."

As they both left the room, Daemon settled into the cold seat of his office while his thoughts threatened to riot against him.

He was far from having a bad headache. No, in fact, if anything, Daemon was very lucid. How could he not be when he just stumbled on solid information hinting that the same people who took his mother’s life wanted something to do with Zina. How could he not be lucid when he had just discovered that those same people had gotten close to Zina through Freya Fergus, and that he had been the one that caused it.

Even though it wasn’t remotely possible for him to remember it, Daemon could acutely imagine his mother’s draft body, ripped from the throat by an inhumanely fast creature. Her stomach ripped out by her child who desperately wanted to survive no matter what.

Then the face of his mother was replaced by that of Zina, and no word could describe the ice that ran through his veins at the image. No word simply came close enough to capture the rage that coursed through his blood at that image. An image that he would do everything to prevent from ever happening.

For the one thousandth time since he met Zina as his mate, his wolf that was normally under his control at all times revolted; ’claim her then!’ It screamed.

He wanted the same honestly. To look at Zina everyday knowing that she didn’t bear his claim on her killed him. To see the pain he had put her through by making her parade as his mate while she didn’t bear a claim to evidence the same.

Truly, it killed him. So why? Why was he persisting through the pain regardless?

When Daemon set out on his mission to avenge the death of his mother, he never believed that would be something that he would come out of alive. Now that he realized that his enemies might be even more powerful than him, coupled with the unknown enemy moving in and out of his castle without notice, Daemon was even more convinced that this was not an affair he would come out of alive.

But being with Zina made him want to live, a fact that was as terrifying as it was foreign. But could he willingly put her through the joy of claiming her, only for her to fall into the traitorous hole of pain when he eventually passed away. For there was after all no greater pain that that of a mate passing away. Without claiming her, the pain would be way lesser, but if he did claim her, the pain of his passing would be brutally suicidal on her.

Could he truly bear to pass such pain to her? Or should he damn all his worries to hell and fight harder to live... just for her?

The temptation... the tug was far too strong. To give into her, to give into his own clandestine desires... but as always, his logic and morbid control won over by a thin margin.

He was being hypocritical and indecisive to Zina. But despite knowing that it was cruel and she was undeserving of it, he was unwilling to relent just yet.

He had had partially convince himself not to look out at the round full moon and the thoughts that it brought to his mind when a knock sounded on his door.

"Come in." He grunted, while Seraph, Zina’s maidservant revealed herself.

The girl bowed to him, eyes casted to the ground even though her body language betrayed the undisguised rage that poured out of her in droves. At the same time, Daemon could smell her panic.

Had something gone wrong?

Eyes glued to the book before him, Daemon asked impassively. "Have you had the maidservants deliver the items to the Theta’s room?"

By items, Daemon was referring to buckets of ice, medicine, and a banquet for food seeing as Marcus reported that Zina had not touched a single lunch delivered to her.

How could the woman starve herself when she was in her heat? Did she like pain that much? He could imagine that the reason behind Seraph’s panic was the fact that her mistress had refused yet again to eat. Although in Daemon’s defense, a food strike would hardly move him with the mood that he was currently in.

But Seraph’s response was something that he had not expected. "The Theta refused to answer her door."

Daemon stared at the girl blandly. "Then you open her door and deliver them."

The girl wrangled her fingers together. "We tried to do just that... but her door refused to open."

Daemon squinted. "What do you mean her door refused to open?"

"There seems to be a barrier behind it."

Daemon stood abruptly, stalking for the girl. The first thought that crossed his mind was that Zina might have jumped out of her window, but he immediately shrugged that thought off as he remembered that he had put Epsilons at her window sides.

So was this just another form of revolting?

"Please save the Theta." The girl wailed quite dramatically, "I am afraid something terrible must have happened to her."

Daemon stalked past the girl, moving for Zina’s room. On reaching there, he was met with a crowd of servants all bearing the items that he had sent out an hour ago. He exhaled harshly, just what would he do with the woman called Zina WolfKnight.

Daemon slammed his body against the door that only budged slightly. The gods, what had she put behind the door?

Using his wolf’s strength, he slammed us body harder against the door until the wood banged open while parts of it splintered. Dusting off the particles that fell on his velvety cloak, he entered the room that would have been otherwise very dark if not for his wolf’s sight.

The windows were shut and the blinds pulled down. He reached Zina’s bed only to find the woman buried under her duvet in blissful sleep.

He sighed from relief while he plopped against a chair by her bedside.

The maidservants dropped off the items, and they all scrambled away after that. Everyone in the palace seemed to be getting very used to his sore mood, which was just fine and good for everyone.

As if unconsciously sensing a presence in her room, Zina’s head rolled to the edge of her bed, baring her neck. The marks that Daemon had given to her were exposed, both the tracking mark and the their mate mark. The mate mark though remained incomplete due to their lack of actual mating.

Zina’s bared neck seemed to whisper to him seductively as the faint scent of her heat started to permeate through the air. It was still the early hours of that night, and it would be another hour before the full extent of her heat would rear its head.

And thus would start her pain and the anguish. A pain that he could easily take away, and yet, refused to.

He didn’t want to test the true extent of his control by waiting for when she would wake up, so he decided to wake her then and there and have her soaked in the ice bath before it would get any worse for the both of them... especially for him.

His hands reached out to do just that—wake her—when Zina woke abruptly as though she had sensed his presence, and next thing, she was flashing a silver dagger at him without actually pausing to know who it was.

Daemon, of course, skillfully trapped her wrists in his, forcing her to look at him while the dagger was still clutched in her palm. But even though she realized it was just him and not an intruder, the fire in her eyes didn’t die out for once.

Maybe because he was now an intruder.
