Chapter 227: An Unknown Enemy

DAEMON

"A ransom, huh?" Marcus said the moment the Epsilons led Zina away from his new quarters that was still being refurbished. Even the man didn’t know about the things he had said to Zina, and that said a lot about how he was currently feeling.

No matter how much Daemon tried, it simply proved to be too impossible to forget the expression that Zina wore on her face; raw hurt and anger.

And he had caused them.

He clutched the letter he had just showed to her in the palm of his hand harder telling himself that it was what responsible for everything that he had to say to Zina. Honestly, he couldn’t quite give a fuck about Falcon and Garuk speaking to her of anything. But he happened to give quite the fuck about his woman.

Instead of answering Marcus’ questions, he said. "I shall have you punished too, Beta DireWolf."

Marcus stood straighter on hearing that as if he had been waiting for the words to he said all along. After all, no one quite knew about his thought process as Marcus quite did.

"I suppose it’s because I kept from you the fact that the Theta was attacked yesterday morning."

Daemon chuckled darkly. "Aren’t you quite forthcoming."

Marcus bowed. "I shall accept any punishment you give me. But I am not apologetic for what I did. The decision I and the Theta made to keep it from you was done with good intentions."

Daemon wasn’t listening to him though. If it was any other man, he would have more than just punished them, but standing before him was his dearest cousin Marcus who pledged his loyalty to him ten years ago. That wasn’t a fact he could simply forget even if he tried to.

"I shall also punish you for conspiring with my mate behind me. You’re lucky I happen to know you quite well, if not, you will be ending up with a charge like the one Falcon was just released from prison for."

Marcus seemed to be incensed at the mere thought of the allegation that Daemon was almost levelling against him, but the man was wise enough to not say anything about it, not when he was fully aware that Daemon’s rage was at its peak even though it didn’t show as evidently as any would think it would show.

Daemon stalked closer to the bowing man. "I shall have know that your duty is to protect the Theta and not conspire with her. Have it in your mind at all times, Marcus."

"Of course." The man rose, staring Daemon straight in the eyes although not defiantly. "Since I am to guard her, it’s only right to know what I am to guard her against. Can I now know what this letter is? And if it all it has any relationship with the tongue that was sent into your room and the words engraved on it?"

Daemon walked towards the grand burning fireplace in the room while Marcus followed him diligently. "Indeed, they’re connected together."

Marcus hesitated before he asked. "Can I now know what word was engraved on it?"

Daemon didn’t answer immediately. Even though Marcus had delivered the package to him, knowing his position at Daemon’s side, he hadn’t overstepped his authority by opening the box. And when Daemon had discovered the tongue and the words engraved on it, he hadn’t been exactly eager to share the words even with Marcus whom he trusted more than anything.

It wasn’t distrust that drove him though, it was fear for Zina.

But now, he knew that to fully investigate the matter properly, he had to tell Marcus more details. Already, the only information that they possessed was that the man whose tongue had been pulled away was a participant who loudly spoke demeaning words about Zina.

Daemon wasn’t at all peeved at the man’s death. Given the chance, he would have ended the man himself. But what peeved him was the fact that whoever killed the man might have done so for Zina. And her why of the matter threatened to drive him crazy.

"Screamers Pack." Daemon simply said while Marcus stilled.

"What?" His DireWolf Beta repeated dumbly for the first time Daemon had known the smartass man.

Daemon didn’t blame Marcus, ever since he discovered about Zina’s background and that she could be a descendant of the executed Screamers Pack, he hadn’t exactly been quite forthcoming with that information although Marcus might have deduced as much from the splintered glasses in his office that fateful day of the discovery.

"The word was engraved with a pen knife in the language of the mountain wolves. We are dealing with someone whose not only intelligent, but might know Zina more than we even do."

"Are you saying the Theta is not from the Matriarchy Pack but the Screamers Pack?"

Daemon nodded while he handed the letter that had been left to him on his room that morning. While Marcus read the contents of the letter, he said; "Have security tightened in the Ice Palace, and make sure fifty pair of elite eyes are always on Zina WolfKnight at all times."

Marcus folded the letter numbly while his jaw ticked from rage. "Are you saying someone managed to sneak into your room unseen?"

"Indeed. It almost made me doubt the capabilities of the people I’ve surrounded myself with."

"You should have told me about all this, Alpha."

"Now I’m telling you. This person could be among the participants in the tournament; if you were to investigate how will you go about it?"

Marcus didn’t even think hard. "I guess we should start by sweeping through the identities of the people that were missing from their team within the early hours the letter could have em been planted."

"Good. Do just that, and from there, we will see where the wind takes us."

"Do you think this man might possess the Ten Million Grams of Gold?"

Daemon chuckled while throwing more logs into the fireplace. "Garuk possesses such astounding skill to steal from Eldric’s nose. No matter how rare, of course they would exist someone smarter enough to steal from Garuk himself."

"I will also investigate the Alpha Prince Garuk. Meanwhile, what will you have me do with him?"

"Keep him in an elite cell. I will interrogate him when I’ve the time."

Marcus bowed. "I shall now move and observe the tournament some more. I believe I should be able to find something."

Daemon gazed intently at the fireplace as if doing so will summon the unknown man that was hellbent on tormenting him. "I sure hope you do."
