Chapter 220: Compendium Of Scavengers

ZINA

"Is that what you want to ask me though? I suppose you want to ask me about the little Red Sister whom you seem to be supporting?"

Zina narrowed her eyes at him. They both knew that there was hardly anything little about Fionna. Besides, she was beginning to notice that Marcus almost seemed different from his usually stoic self whenever he was taunting or talking about Fionna.

What was his deal with her? Was he generally peeved with Red Sisters? Or did powerful women simply piss him off. Zina didn’t dwell on it for much because he was right when he said she was concerned about Fionna, not like she was going to admit it outright.

She sighed despondently. "Not just Fionna, I am worried about Yaren too." She said, clutching her heart.

The most unusual thing happened. Marcus chuckled like he had never heard something as ridiculous as what Zina just said. "Even I am not worried about him, much less you the woman whom he hates with a passion reserved for miscreants."

Zina fake gasped. "Miscreants?!"

"Ask what you want to ask Theta, theatrics don’t fit you."

Zina narrowed her eyes at him, theatrics did fit her but she wasn’t about to argue that in the hallway while she was facing off a very impatient man.

"How is Fionna? What is the progress of the tournament so far? Which team is leading? What do you mean by it’s a compendium of scavengers."

His cool, liquid dark eyes appraised her with amusement. "One question at a time,Theta, and if you must know, Yaren’s team is leading. Not only were they able to obtain their object within the three hours mark, but they have been able to obtain two other objects belonging to other teams."

Why was he not answering about Fionna though? While Zina was impressed with Yaren, the man’s awesomeness was history. Surely nothing but excellence was expected from a man who had spent all of his life by Daemon’s side. So while she was impressed, she was more concerned about Fionna at the moment who was playing hide and seek team game when she was trained to be a killer and seductress.

"What about Fionna’s team?" Zina asked expectantly. With the Sighter on the same team, they would be leading as second for sure. But that hope shrank and evaporated into thin air with Marcus’ next words.

"Team thirty-three have not obtained a single object from the tournament." Marcus said like she had expected just that all along.

Zina’s blood froze. What? Not a single item? Why? How? There was still more than a day to the end of the contest, but time was far from Zina’s concerns. She was more concerned about what could have possibly gone so wrong that they had not obtained a single object?

"What do you mean? Fionna’s group has not obtained a single object? What about the group leader?!" Zina asked panickedly.

Marcus narrowed his eyes at her with suspicion at how casually she spoke of the said group leader.

"The group leader absconded the group once they entered the Forest of Ice Mountains. Why are you asking about him though?"

The Sighter absconded the group?! It hadn’t occurred to Zina that she might have been convincing Fionna to follow the lead of a mad man who hardly held the tournament in high regards. What had she done?

True, she had been following South’s sound report, but what if the report itself was wrong in itself? That maybe, just maybe, this Sighter man was not an expert finder in the least.

Zina could only pray and hope that Fionna had quickly adapted to the situation. But Zina had a feeling that was hardly the case. She exhaled harshly, and without being actually conscious of it, she muttered.

"I hope she’s doing well...."

"Why would you hope for that? Ah, I forgot she’s your ’sister’." Marcus quoted with a voice dripping with condescension that startled Zina. Of course the man had heard how she had described her and Fionna’s relationship to Daemon.

That aside, she wondered what had happened that night when she had been sleeping blissfully in Daemon’s very strong arms.

"Do you have any more questions for me, Theta? Or can I be on my way now?"

Zina smiled grimly. "Is there any other report of note?"

"Four of the participants are confirmed to be dead." Marcus said brusquely like it was something normal, and then he was leaving her behind.

Zina was hardly shocked at the news. She hadn’t expected the tournament to be bloodless in the least simply because it was Hide and Seek. Men have died for even lesser things.

She shut her eyes and she could imagine the snowy path of the Forest of Mountains filled with red drops of blood. It’s been only less than seven hours and four people were already confirmed dead. She could imagine that with the rise of the sun, the death toll would only increase as many fought for the chance to hear their hands on the object whether by wit or by force.

Zina was about to leave when a gruff familiar voice interrupted her.

"Zina."

She froze for a moment, and without thinking much about it, she was running in the direction of the man responsible.

"Falcon!" She screamed, stopping short of hugging him. She could sense familiar eyes watching from the shadows, but she didn’t remove her eyes for once from Falcon’s face. He now possessed a scruff that made him look mature and brought out his resemblance to Daemon.

He scratched his hair awkwardly. "How have you been?" He asked in a hoarse voice.

"I should be asking you that." Zina muttered, filled with shame as she thought of the fact that Falcon had gone to prison because of her. While she could not do much to sway Daemon’s mind, especially because Falcon had been imprisoned for making an audacious statement where others would have ordinarily lost their heads for, Zina had tried to check in with the Stone Pack under Falcon’s lead as much as she could which was only once in the crazy last three weeks of her life.

"I’ve been fine." He said softly. "While Dae... I mean, while the Alpha King did imprison me, I was doing well. You could hardly call the place a prison." His eyes hardened a bit, "although I was wrong in the matter, I must apologize to you."

Zina shook her head vigorously. "No please, I am the one who should be apologizing."

Falcon smiled, his eyes holding a boyish glint. "You look well. How have you been?"

Zina returned the smile with a full one of her own. "I’ve been doing well."

"I can see that." He nodded, his expression turning grim. "I’ve a favour to ask of you though. I don’t know if it’s improper...."

"Improper?" Zina rushed to object, "ask away and we will discuss whether it’s improper or not later."

"It’s about my younger brother Garuk..." Falcon trailed unsure.

Zina startled at the mention of the youngest Alpha Prince who shared the same mother with Falcon and Eldric. The infamous G named Alpha Prince in the alphabetical naming of the princes.

"What about the prince?" Zina asked, squinting as she tried hard to remember anything about Garuk. Not even Eldric spared the twenty year old prince his time, and Garuk had been particularly notorious for being the spoiled Alpha Prince who got his own pack at such a young age. Even in the wake of all that happened with Daemon’s takeover, Zina never saw the young Alpha at the Ice Castle for a day.

Brothels and whatnot were usually associated with his name. But more overwhelming than his bleak reputation was the love that Falcon had for his little brother. It was for Garuk that Falcon endured all he did under Eldric’s reign.

Grimly, Falcon said. "Garuk has done something that will have the Alpha King coming for his head."
