Chapter 197: That Kind Of Thing?
Chapter 197: That Kind Of Thing?
ZINA
"You’ve no right to remove her, your majesty."
Zina’s eyes quickly darted to the older woman’s as she realized she hadn’t had the time to inform her of the decision she had all but made earlier that day. In the commotion of everything that came after, she had completely forgotten to send Seraph ahead to inform her.
Who would have thought, even her normal days were beginning to drag out longer than she could have possibly imagined.
Zina tried to use her eyes to communicate to the woman that there was a misunderstanding; it was her that had after all agreed to this. But Sybril was too busy facing off Daemon to see her signs.
The three Eldermen faced Daemon too. One of the men of the two spoke through the mask covering his face and exposing only his eyes. "Your majesty, the people won’t think kindly of you if you were to remove the Theta who just crowned you."
Daemon was unamused. "Well isn’t it a good thing that the Theta has agreed to give up her position for the sake of fairness."
Sybril’s eyes widened and the woman finally glanced at Zina, then back at Daemon. "For the sake of fairness? Pray tell what that means your majesty?"
"Surely you didn’t think the four houses would sit well with having their houses upturned while the Theta appointed by Eldric’s treachery still carries on with her title?" Daemon said without emotion. He hadn’t said that before, but Zina was seeing another logic to why Daemon asked her to win back her title on her own terms.
"Emeritus Theta Zina WolfKnight will also have an equal opportunity to fight for her title as every other person if that is what you’re worried about."
This time it was the female Eldermen that spoke in her normal drawl that managed to sound both offensive and allaying at the same time.
"Surely you do not mean for the Theta... I mean, the former Theta to fight for her title no less than a street rat like the display that has currently graced the streets of our dearest capital." Her eyes swept distastefully over the visiting crowd who were all still cheering to Daemon’s title.
Daemon smirked. "Of course not. The position for the Theta will be only one test to determine one final winner, and the Temple gets to chip in on what form they want the test to come in."
One of the male Eldermen sighed. "That is just fine. Since it’s settled, you must excuse us, your majesty. I am afraid my bleary eyes have seen far too many more colours in one day than it has seen in years."
"In that case, I wish you all a safe journey back to your conclave." Daemon said amicably as he accepted their bow with a curl of his eyebrow. Zina’s eyes widened; it was unlike Daemon to be amicable about anything
The female Eldermen was the last to descend the pavilion stairs, but before she left, she made a show of dragging Zina towards her body as if they were falling by accident and then she whispered harshly and quickly in her ears.
"I shall convince myself that you’re not foolish enough to lose that position to any man or woman that thinks you’re undeserving of it. Even if the Alpha King wants you to be his Luna; whoever says a woman can’t occupy more than one position of power?"
And then the woman was quickly leaving while muttering an apology for bumping into her as if she never whispered decadent words in Zina’s ears. Why would she say that to her though? Zina had never had a close encounter with the woman. Already, the Eldermen were as mysterious as they were feared and Zina had been long amazed that a woman managed to be one of them.
And now all of a sudden, said woman was offering her life advice? Talk about women supporting women.
"I shall put your title up for the taking when the tournament ends, so for now, you can continue acting as Theta until then." Daemon addressed her in a low voice.
Zina simply bowed, "As it pleases you your majesty."
His fingers tipped her chin up until their eyes met. Her breath hitched in her throat as the sight of him—ruffled hair, rugged appearance and all—was way too painful to fully process and swallow.
"Don’t do that before me." He said in a low timbre voice that shot straight to her core. Zina had to remember it was the full moon that night, although she was more prepared than she had been the last time of her heat.
Zina tried to slap his fingers away. While it might seem as though they were obstructed by a pillar, someone might still see what was happening. "What do you mean?" She asked breathlessly when he wouldn’t pry his fingers away from her chin.
"Bowing to me when we’re together... in private."
Zina looked around and noticed that they were alone. Both Yaren, Sybirl, and the Temple aides had left at some point immediately after the Eldermen.
"Oh... but it’s true that you’re my king...."
"Same way you’re my mate." He retorted, cutting off her protest. His eyes shone with something malicious, "unless you’re into that kind of thing...." He trailed, his fingers caressing the skin of her jaw deliciously.
Zina was in between fighting off the onslaught of feelings he was provoking out of her and figuring out what he meant.
"What... do you mean by that kind of thing...?"
His eyes glinted with amusement. "You know, that kind of thing where women love to call their lovers sir? Master? My lord?"
Zina smacked his arm harder as her cheeks inflamed. Zina didn’t understand half of what he was saying, but his expression told her all that she needed to know and that was the fact he was speaking of something so obscene.
She turned away from him before and stepped out from the obstruction before she got any redder, and that was when something caught her eyes. Marcus was pasting some posters on the center wall of the square where the competitors stood. Yaren was there too, although not with Marcus; no he stood with the thousands of competitors.
Zina watched, enraptured as Daemon stepped out from the obstruction and stood beside her. The crowd fell silent while they waited for him to say something and Zina too found herself yearning to hear him say something in public.
Daemon in fact looked more annoyed that their little escapade had been interrupted, but when Marcus seemed to be done pasting the posters, he addressed the crowd.
"I would like to say welcome to the Arctic North, but considering that a lot of you will be leaving here in twenty-fours time, I shall try my best to not make you very comfortable then."
