Chapter 190: Who Will Be Her Opponents?

ZINA

Zina made a quick escape from Daemon’s room and his enrapturing presence. The moment she was out of his chambers, she collapsed against a pillar, her hands clutching at her chest while his last words played over and over again in her head.

"Should you win back your title, then your prize will be me in any form you wish for it."

In any form she wished for it? The only problem with that proposition was the fact that as he spoke those words while barely any space separated them, Zina wished as hell that instead of his breath that stroked her, that his lips would be glued to hers. She wished for him in the form she would want for a lover, and the only thing embarrassing about the thought was the fact that she hadn’t been embarrassed at all.

Not even in the least.

She had already gotten unusually comfortable with her desire and yearning for Daemon that she was sure she would have jumped him otherwise. And she would have done just that if not for the fact that Daemon was making her an offer where she would stand unconditionally by his side.

Not just as a mate or a lover, but as an equal in every sense of the word. It was exactly what she had always dreamed of, to be able to stand tall by his side, so when the offer was brought before her, how ever could she resist?

He had torn and dug into her shameful past, taunted her with the very words she used to demean herself in her head, and then he had gone ahead to challenge her. At least one thing she was beginning to realize was the fact that Daemon knew her well, perhaps even better than she knew herself. Even without her speaking of her fears, he had glimpsed that much just by observing her, and strangely she felt elated by it....

...and by how he had taken charge without waiting for her hesitation that was sure to come.

Zina managed to walk back to her room and Seraph, who was already back from escorting Central out, frowned yet again on seeing the dire straits of her hair.

"Really? It’s only an hour until the coronation, Theta." She exclaimed, tending to her hair again.

Zina didn’t know when she dissolved into a laughing fit as the true stance of her precarious situation glared back at her. Wiping away her tears, she said to the maidservant who was staring at her from the mirror like she was a foreign being.

"After this coronation, today might be my last day as the Theta."

"...."

"What? Why? Is it because of your marriage to his majesty? Surely, that man doesn’t mean to lock you in as a housewife?" Seraph scowled, and Zina didn’t know which she found more funny.

The fact that Seraph referred to her Alpha and King as ’that man’, or the fact that the girl had thought exactly as she once did, that maybe in fact, Daemon intended to lock her in as a housewife.

But that notion had not only turned out to be wrong but Daemon had in fact, officially offered her the opportunity to stand by his side without any more objections to her standing. And she would have been a fool if she didn’t take such an opportunity.

One thing was for sure, Zina had no intention of losing. She would use this opportunity to prove Yaren wrong when he said that she wasn’t fit to stand by his side. True, maybe she couldn’t offer Daemon the exact kind of power marrying from a powerful pack would lend him, but that didn’t mean she would be useless otherwise.

"In fact, he did the opposite." Zina answered as Seraph completed her hair and then brought forward a white flowing dress that she was supposed to wear for the coronation.

Seraph frowned. "What do you mean by that?"

"I shall be fighting for the position of Theta instead, the same manner many would be fighting for the Four Positions."

Seraph went silent as she thought over what Zina had said. Not being one to ask too many questions, she simply nodded.

"I see, so you’re a participant as well."

"You could say that."

"Do you know the possible persons you will be competing against?"

Zina shook her head pedantically, "I don’t know that."

It had been too sudden on her part, but Zina could almost bet her soul that Daemon had been planning it for quite some time. Leave it to the man to give an almost one month notice to other participants, and then give her just an hour notice.

Seraph chewed her bottom lip. "I don’t like it. This whole affair seems too secretive and way too suspenseful for my liking. I truly hope everything goes well. The position of Theta belongs only to you."

Zina smiled while she stood from the chair to step into her flowing dress. "Although I do have some ideas as to my opponents."

"Pray tell, who do you think they would be?"

Zina smiled, eyes shining with profound insight. "The Night Mages are sure to participate. In fact, I anticipate that I might be contending against the Four Great Evils. The White Monks would have joined, but they’re too busy fighting a war against Daemon." Zina finished sarcastically while the colour drained from Seraph’s face.

"Surely you do not think your words comfort me?" Seraph said in a dreary voice while she proceeded to zip up Zina’s dress.

Zina examined herself against the long mirror they stood before. The white dress was embedded with delicate complicated patterns, created with the fabric itself. The dress was without any dramatic designs or even a single moonstone, and yet it possessed an ethereal beauty that could only be heard of in a fairytale.

The dress fit her snuggly, cinching at her waist and flowing into a ball to her feet. The long sleeves were slitted up until her elbows exposing her lower arms. The low neckline of the dress exposed just a decent amount of cleavage that made her look ravishing. The contrast between her almost silver hair and the color of the dress made her look something like a vengeful goddess who didn’t mind spilling blood on her dress.

A vengeful goddess?

The description had come out of nowhere in particular but her subconsciousness, and yet, the moment the thought formed, all hell broke loose instantly.

The door to her room crashed with a bang that sent her eyes flying to the source and direction of the noise. And before she could fully process it, she smelt it before she felt it... a rogue wolf running for her at a speed so insane that Zina didn’t manage to remove herself from there despite Seraph screaming and pushing at her.

It felt like she was in a trance and all she could do was stand rooted in place while she watched the black wolf with a killing aura come for her neck to deliver a death that was sure not to be quick or painless. And when she recovered herself, it was far too late to run away.

Even if she were to run though, where would she run to?
