Chapter 188: Her Crimson Rage
Chapter 188: Her Crimson Rage
ZINA
Song; Dance For Me Wallis by Abel Korzeniowski
"When I’m done with him, Zina, you will take back every despicable word that you said today, and every despicable thought that has formed in that pretty head of yours."
When a man delivers a threat such as the one that Daemon had all but succinctly spelt out, a woman like Zina should feel elated, right? So why did the need to disappear and hide away from him only intensify at that moment? How was it that she could not bear to stand before him?
She shut her eyes, shaking her head. "That won’t be necessary. As I’ve said before, you should not concern yourself about this."
"The hell I won’t be concerned about this." Daemon spat out, the words like a whip cracking against her back.
Zina opened her eyes and took his simmering self in. "Surely you do not expect me to sit down and wait for you to take my revenge for me?! Please... just please, let this go. I shall take care of it."
Daemon smiled sardonically while the gold in his eyes cooled, revealing his original dark eyes. For all Zina knew, the man might not have been aware that he used the power of his wolf. "Well it’s too late for that."
Zina’s eyes widened. "What do you mean by that?"
"Perhaps if you had said this two days earlier, then there would be room for negotiation. Now, I don’t believe there’s any room for such."
Zina’s mind went into overdrive at that. She had just instructed the Central Heralder to capture Igar, but she hadn’t calmed down to think that she had not seen the damned man in the past two days.
Daemon had already made a move before she did. And he made that move much to her lack of knowledge.
She clenched her fists by her sides, praying to the heavens above for a strength that she was certainly lacking then and there.
"Where is he?" She managed to ask in a barely constrained voice.
"If you want the answer to that, then you will tell me about everything he’s done to you."
Daemon might as well have been hitting her while asking her to hold back her tears at the same time, that was the only description that came close to describing the torture his words were to her.
Could the facade of strength she wanted to uphold before him crumble any further than it was already? Just how much lower would she fall in front of him... and how cruel was he to demand that she bared herself in that manner?
She could see it in his steel, resolute eyes that he didn’t understand her internal struggle, but that didn’t make it hurt any less.
"Do you not trust me to take care of my own matters?" Zina asked as she remembered the very night when he had professed his desires to marry her. Was that proposal built on a flake where Daemon didn’t truly understand her beyond the fact they were mates? Or was he simply a man that couldn’t care less?
Something shifted in his eyes, but then it was quickly gone. The fact that Daemon still attempted to control his rage even before her was baffling to say the least, but at least his next words didn’t hold back. Like a whip decorated with thorns, it hammered into her, driving the point home.
"Oh, I trust you Zina," he drawled, his fingers reaching out to part away some strands of hair that escaped from her hair updo, "but since you didn’t inform me of this, I shall ask that you remain your incorruptible self and trust that I shall deliver you a well deserved revenge."
His words... cold, taunting, sarcastic even.
Zina wasn’t a violent person, truly she was not that kind of woman. She might not be as smart as Daemon was, but she preferred thinking with her head other than her fists—probably because she didn’t possess the latter. But in that moment, never had she felt the urge to slap someone the way she felt with Daemon.
She wanted to shove at him, hit him until her fists bled, claw at him until her fingers were worn out... she wanted him to see her crimson rage.
He dared to assume that she withheld the information on her sordid history with Igar because she didn’t trust him. The fact that he didn’t understand her struggle made her feel like the status of their relationship was taking steps back.
He wanted to take her revenge for her? He had no right. This was for her and Fionna to do. Especially for herself.
She was the one who still bore the WolfKnight’s surname, she was the one who still bore the scars, the sordid memories, the abandonment tag, everything belonged to her alone... how dare him maneuver himself into acting like this was his pain? What did he understand about the pain?
Alpha Wolf or not, it was pissing Zina. Mate instinct or not, it didn’t serve to erase the urge to shake him violently until his eyes could open and he would see that she was carrying a huge gaping wound.
Was this what it meant to be with someone? Sharing burdens? Zina had never been witness to an exemplary relationship, but she didn’t believe that she and Daemon were going about it the right way. Especially him... certainly, he didn’t have a right to bathe into her problems without due recourse to how she might feel?
Zina unclenched her still tight fists. She backed away from Daemon’s fingers that were lightly brushing away the hairs of her forehead.
She bowed to him while a deathly stillness took over her. "I shall now take my leave, your majesty. I am afraid I’ve taken away too much of your time."
Zina soon realized that she had been sorely wrong about Daemon when his cruel words stopped her exit from his chambers.
"Coward," he snickered, "was this how you lived your life all the time? Running away from your problems? Bowing down as long as the pain isn’t that painful? Acquiescing even when you wanted to roar?"
Zina finally lost it, before she knew it, she gave into the rage and she was turning back for Daemon. She raised a hand to hit him, but she stilled, unable to do just that not only because it felt wrong and useless to hit him, but because he had donned on a dark expression that told Zina that her rage was nothing in comparison to his.
