Chapter 182: Her New Ambition

Chapter 182: Her New Ambition

ZINA

It was the night to the coronation and Zina was sure there was just a tiny thread to which her sanity hung on.

She clenched and unclenched her fists. Tugged and untugged at her hair. Screamed out of her window, and cried out of it. Stared at her ceremonial, very gorgeous dress, and resisted the urge to shred it to pieces.

For the last three days, she lived in a torture and torment like no other, and all because she was trying to figure out the ambition of Daemon NorthSteed.

Three nights ago, when she had been sitting at an elevated height on his table and when he had stared up at her from his chair, something Zina feared she had always known had become abundantly clear to her. And that was the fact that Daemon had barely offered half of himself to her.

They were supposedly getting married, he says his ambition is to be her husband, and yet, how was it that he felt forever distant.

Did he not trust her to be able to shoulder his worries? Zina supposed it was hypocritical of her to think that when she hardly ever opened up, but she was a hypocrite alright, and Yaren’s taunts kept on repeating in her head like the sound of a horrible music.

What could you possibly offer him and his ambitions?

"You summoned me and yet here you’re pacing about like you’re prepared to eat something alive."

Zina jolted at the sound of the elderly woman’s voice, turning to behold Sybril. She expelled a harsh breath, walking to the woman.

"Thank you for coming all the way. Apparently, the Theta is not allowed to step out of the hallowed grounds of the Arctic Ice Castle the night before the coronation."

Sybril smiled cynically, her walking stick clicking against the ground. "When the Theta calls, I shall answer."

Zina smiled back in response, but it came out strained. "I’ve something to ask of you." She said, attempting to hide the nervousness in her voice, but that was a fool’s sojourn because Sybril could see her and anxiousness for all it was.

"What troubles you in the middle of the night leading to the full moon."

Zina took a deep breath, bracing herself. "You once told me about the ancient seers." She started, chuckling as if she meant to tell a joke.

"Ahhh. The ancient seers of our time that could see battles even before the thought of it were formed," Sybril said fondly, "they’re o more, but I must say, you, Theta, are a peculiar Seer yourself."

Zina smiled tightly at that, her clothes suddenly feeling tight. "You said they’re methods that were used in the times of old... methods that could wrought the best visions."

Sybril’s easy expression was replaced by an uneasiness as if she knew what Zina was thinking about. "Yes, but these methods are sorcery in its best form."

Zina wrangled her fingers together. She might as well just get it out at once. "You once told me that in the Mountains, they’re some people who still practice these methods. Perhaps could you connect me with someone?"

Sybril’s expression noticeably darkened just as she struck her walking stick against the hard, marble floor. "Do you know what you ask for Theta? Surely, you do not mean to blemish your pure gifts?!"

Zina wanted to scoff at that, but she knew that Sybril was quite old fashioned in thinking, so she didn’t want to outrightly butt heads with the woman.

"You once said they’re safer methods to enhance the sight," Zina reasoned, "would it not be better if I practiced some methods that would only enhance my sight a little more?"

The woman struck her walking stick against the floor once again, something like terror taking over her features. "If you were to use sorcery, your power of seeing visions will not just be enhanced a little but you will be unmatched and unstoppable."

Zina stood dumbstruck, staring at the woman in confusion. When Sybril said nothing further to render what she said as a joke, Zina chuckled uneasily.

"Most people do it. Do not exaggerate its effect on my behalf." She retired, hugging herself.

The older woman’s furious eyes rested on her. The fury in them had Zina even more confused, and frankly, a little bit scared.

"What has rooted such ambition in you? Don’t you know that by taking this step, you’re only fulfilling the damned prophecy about you?!" She spoke harshly, staring Zina down.

Zina blinked and reopened her eyes multiple times, stunnedat the intensity of Sybril’s reaction. For something she had so innocently thrown out, the woman was reacting very harshly.

Okay, maybe her inquiries had been anything but innocent, especially in view of the fact that she was trying so hard to be useful to Daemon, or in her own words, she wanted to be who Daemon truly needed.

All her life, the only thing she had ever had was her sight, so she had thought, what if she could see more? What if she could be a woman so powerful that she could foretell death at her whims and not at the whim of whatever higher powers controlled her power to see.

"What do you mean by that? What has my request got to do with the ancient prophecy?" Zina inquired when she recovered from her shock.

"The Five Great Evils abhor you because their prophecy foretells the one whom the flake shall fall from her eyes shall replace them one day. Once you begin to dabble in sorcery at Daemon’s side, it’s no different than wanting to steal the very power that has given them a place in our world."

Zina blinked away her shock, cold anger taking its root.

What? She couldn’t even do something for fear of some stupid prophecy?! All she wanted to do was stand by Daemon’s side proudly and not pull down Five Organizations that have long existed as the sands in their world have.

"Fine, if you won’t help me, then I shall seek help elsewhere."

It was childish and pathetic of her to say such, but she knew that was the only thing that could get Sybril to support her.

The woman sighed, and as Zina expected, she acquiesced in the face of her threat. "Fine, I shall introduce you to someone I know."
