Chapter 169: Signs Of Conspiracy

Chapter 169: Signs Of Conspiracy

ZINA

Once they entered the territory of the BloodMoon Pack, a knock sounded against Zina’s window, jolting her from the deep thoughts that had taken over her.

Zina drew the window open while Fionna was on guard, eyes eying the window like some beast would jump through the window and not their companions.

The face of Warrior Leo as Marcus had introduced the gruff older man that led the Epsilons, greeted her.

"Theta."

"Commander Leo. Is there any problem?"

"Not at all Theta. However, on the orders of Beta DireWolf, I was asked to deliver this letter to you once we pass the borders of the BloodMoon Pack."

Zina hesitantly collected the scroll the man held out for her before she shut the window.

Fionna scoffed, bitterness and rage clouding her features. "Did the man write to inform us of some secret conspiracy of the BloodMoon Pack and apologise for our impending death."

Zina smiled, even as the coldness of the paper somewhat eliminated any need to flash her teeth. "I see you’re still bitter. I heard that Beta DireWolf is only a step away from becoming a Lycan Shifter, I also hear he’s a skilled warrior. Do you think you can take on him?"

Fionna scowled as if the answer was obvious and she was highly offended. "Please, I will have a man like him crying under my claws in less than ten seconds if we were to have a combat."

Zina rolled her eyes while she pried the paper open. She didn’t think that was true—Daemon was known to keep only men that almost matched his own strength around him. There was no room for weakness in his inner circle, so rumours aside, Zina knew that Marcus’ ability certainly wasn’t ordinary.

We have been investigating the BloodMoon’s and their impending treason for some time now. Their fall is near so I must warn you to tread with care. Daemon will be back anytime soon, so don’t do anything rash....

Zina paused in reading the letter, rolling her eyes at the intended meaning of the words. Marcus must think of her as a child for him to ask her not to do anything rash. Collecting herself, she resumed reading the letter.

Also try to avoid the IceSavage Pack. We have intel hinting at their conspiracy with the BloodMoons...

Now that gave her a pause. Zina had intimate knowledge of Brestom Savage’s greed and the pesky army he had been raising. In fact, she kept the information from Daemon thinking he would have the deets about it, but Marcus hinting that there might be something more to it was startling to say but the least.

Could she have stupidly thought the IceSavage uncrowned heir was simply attempting an internal takeover in the Pack when it could have been something more. Could his greed be that much?

Zina’s eyes trailed to the remaining words of the letter.

I guess it’s only fair that I give you a response now. Daemon went to investigate something related to the man you saw in the masquerade mask. It might have something to do with your roots.

Zina didn’t know that she had been holding in a lot of tension until her shoulders slumped from relief. She clutched the letter to heart, while Fionna stared at her like she had grown two heads.

Daemon had not only listened to her vision, but he was now acting on it. But while the gesture was truly moving, a part of her that knew Daemon NorthSeed beyond the gentlemanly facade he always seemed to put on felt like something was off....

...that maybe Daemon wasn’t personally making the investigation just for her sake. His personal interests seemed at stake too.

But what could his personal interest be?

Zina never overestimated her value, and it was that hard fact that drew the point home.

Daemon’s absence three days to his coronation was not because he was doing something for her, but because he was also doing something for himself.

"What does the letter say?" Fionna asked while looking her over strangely.

Zina unclutched the paper, folding it neatly and locking it in one of her mini boxes. She would have burned it, but for some reasons she knew well of, she felt the need to preserve the words of the letter... especially the last sentence.

"That we should be careful once we get to the BloodMoon Pack." Zina simply answered and the words elicited an eye roll from Fionna, who then proceeded to stretch her legs in the carriage and then shut her eyes in sleep.

Zina in turn, shut her eyes too even though in reality they were mere minutes away from the Alpha’s dwellings. She conjured images of four-year-old Suri who tried to be strong for her mother and refused to cry even when she was in pain.

Zina could imagine her despair and bleary eyes. She could imagine how tough life had been for her at such tender years and imagining it all only served to fuel her rage to heights that she never thought possible. Which was well and fine because she needed all the rage in the world.

If she were to face Alpha BloodMoon, then she would need rage to guide her words and direct her actions.

The carriage came to a stop, signifying that they had reached their destination. Zina climbed down, and Fionna followed after. The other woman was still stuck in a bad mood, and the way she hovered over Zina protectively said that she would skin anyone that dared to bring harm to her just for the fun of doing so.

The Beta of the Pack was the one who greeted them. And on seeing Zina, something like disappointment and anger stormed in his eyes. Were they expecting to see another?

Perhaps Marcus.

"Come in, but you must leave your Epsilons behind. The Alpha doesn’t want to be disturbed." The Beta said gruffly

Zina’s hackles were rightfully raised, and she wondered exactly what they intended to do.

Meanwhile, Fionna was playing with her short silver dagger that glinted in the sun, acting as if the Beta didn’t exist altogether. She twirled the hilt on and on and Zina had a feeling the woman was thinking of the best way to perform her first kill for that day.

Preferably, using the Beta as her first experiment.

Zina didn’t take any step forward at the Beta’s prompting. "These are the warriors of the Alpha King. I won’t be stepping in without them."

TheBeta merely regarded her with eyes filled with such condescension that Zina was simply too stunned by it to react.

"How dare a mere woman object to the orders of an Alpha?" He snarled while something shifted in the air. "It seems to me that your little position has gotten into your head."
