Chapter 153: The Rise Of The WolfKnights
There’s hatred, then there is the visceral need to obliterate everything till all that’s left is debris.
ZINA
Honestly, Zina wasn’t the compendium of self preservation and restraint. In the sparse knowledge she had of herself, she knew that when it came to restraining herself from speaking when she really wanted to speak was a fool’s sojourn.
So it wasn’t that surprising that out of the many things she could easily tolerate, hearing some woman that was way too beautiful than normal speak to Daemon without the respect he deserved ticked her off and brought out an ugly side of her.
It was excusable for all the women of the Red Sisters to be as beautiful as sin, but what wasn’t excusable was for said women to travel all the way from the East and attempt to pull their weight here in the Arctic North.
The thought that Zina would have by some twist of fate been a part of the Red Sisters always filled her with dread. But on meeting Fionna and seeing first hand the evidence of the Red Sisters training, that dread turned to hate.
Attempting to calm her raging emotions, Zina remembered that the woman before her was probably also a young girl who was turned into his emotionless, block of ice. However the bottomless pits for eyes of the woman that took her in with a condescending stare didn’t exactly make her mission in that regard easy.
"The Red Sisters helped Alpha King Daemon, once the banished prince, to win the war against the Arising Rogues." The Red Sister gritted through narrowed eyes, "in that regard, do you not think we have the right to speak to him anyway we wish to?"
The world stilled after the preposterous words rolled off the woman’s lips. Every action that happened thereafter was played before Zina like some terrible slow motion. Whether it be the mad grin of Marcus, or the balled fists of Yaren, or the cunny smile that tugged against Daemon’s lips as if he were the devil himself.
Zina made to reply to the woman’s harsh words with an equally scathing one of her own when Daemon gestured to her with a finger against his lips to not talk. Between staring at him in all his enigmatic presence and staring at his eyes that twinkled with the oncoming of his shrewd manipulations, Zina turned her eyes away from him, slightly annoyed that he wasn’t putting the Red Sister in her place.
Insult to an Alpha was punishable by death, while an insult to an Alpha King was punishable by violent death. And yet, the Red Sisters were flagrantly flaunting themselves for some meagre contribution Zina was yet to know the details of.
Her eyes caught that of Modrich who was grinning like he had just won a prize, and something clicked as they exchanged stares filled with hatred.
Modrich intended to take Fionna for himself.
Horror and indignation filled Zina at the visceral thought as all she wanted to do was claw at Modrich’s eyes until he was blind to the world and the beauties in it as she once was.
But Modrich was either unaware of her violent thoughts towards him, or the man was confident that he would make it out of the castle walls alive.
Zina was already regretting her vows to play the amicable mate while Daemon played his duties as the monarch regardless of her personal feelings. She simply couldn’t imagine being on any sort of amicable terms with Modrich or the WolfKnights if it meant he would see the bastard’s face, even if such meetings wouldn’t be frequent.
Modrich walked towards Daemon, a swagger to his steps. The prominence of the WolfKnight Pack and their vast success in the past few years had taken their entire world by storm so Modrich’s pride wasn’t exactly unfounded. After all, it was Zina who had once childishly foretold the rise of the WolfKnights, and true to her vision it had come to pass.
Exactly three months after Zina told the false vision and Modrich made his last visit to the Arctic North when he delivered the cold words of betrayal that shattered Zina’s life, the WolfKnights had discovered a diamond mine in the evil forests of the GreenLands that no one dared to step into for all things cursed and vile was said to reside there.
And just like that, the WolfKnights had risen and changed from being a small insignificant pack to becoming a prominent and powerful mid-ranked Pack.
The cost of their rise had simply been diamonds. Transparent stones that were said to be worth more than gold. Although Zina had a feeling there was more to the common story than meets the eye.
Zina knew it that it was only a matter of time before they became a High-Ranked Pack, and just the thought of it filled her with a yearning to destroy the WolfKnights and make sure all that remained of the Pack was rumbles that would be evidence of their fall.
Some middle-aged man who silently stood behind Modrich caught Zina’s eyes, and every hot emotion of hate she filled turned cold to sharp points of ice. Even though she had never seen the man before, Zina was almost sure that this could only be the former banished Beta of the Pack.
However she wasn’t quite convinced that Modrich had let such a vile man back into the pack so she continued to stare at him until his eyes met hers.
Zina froze, understanding that Modrich was that vile and that the man before her was the person she thought he was.
The once banished Beta of the WolfKnight Pack was back.
Hurriedly, Zina averted her eyes, truly afraid of what she would do as her body shook from tremors while past shame washed over her. There was no denying it now, she would destroy Modrich and his pack even if it would cost her her life.
Modrich spread out his hand to his sides as he spoke flamboyantly. "I know my mistakes during the war and I wish to amend them. As a gesture of my good will, I will offer you ten percent of the WolfKnights central mines."
The people around them gasped at the unusual and very generous offer. Daemon on his part didn’t look moved by it.
"And what do you want in return?" He asked, eyes masking the deviousness behind them.
Modrich smiled idiotically, "I want nothing in return," he trailed dramatically while a young girl that looked to be no more than twenty-two appeared from behind him, "but it would be my honour to join the WolfKnights and the North through the marital bond."
Oh what a foolish man Modrich was.
