The Alpha's Blind Fate
Chapter 146: I Am Sorry

Chapter 146: I Am Sorry

And you will meet a man who is supposed to take your life but will take your heart instead...

ZINA

Zina barely reached the door when a wall of a man was blocking her from taking any further step forward. Daemon’s eyes were narrowed at her into slits, and something brewed like a storm within them.

"What do you want?" He gritted as if he was dragged to a party he didn’t want to sit out.

A beautiful question, but try as Zina may, the more she tried to find a particular answer to it, the more she came up with heaps and heaps of them.

She wanted a lot of things, and Daemon could only give her so little. Her time with the WolfKnights had taught her that rather than settle for less, she should settle for absolutely nothing.

Zina swallowed, staring audaciously at Daemon as she made her unabashed request. "If this mate bond is to exist, I want more... and you give way too less. The answers to my previous questions... about why the Matriarchy and every other thing else, are you ready yet to answer me?"

Daemon’s lips tightened as rage clouded his features. He was angry when she was the one who was offended?! Talk about hypocrisy.

"Do you mean you wish to refuse this bond if I don’t answer you?"

Zina rolled her eyes as if she found him truly exhausting at that moment. "Your coldness to me is enough to freeze the entire desert south and yet you speak as if you do not wish to reject me as your mate!"

"I do not wish for that." He said solemnly, and the words were like beautiful music in her ears. Beautiful music that she had always yearned to listen to. But as if slapped by some invisible force, she shook her head vigorously, refusing to be seduced by his hot and cold attitude.

"Neither do you wish to accept me." Zina said, because that was true.

"Is this because I didn’t claim you during your heat?" He asked through narrowed eyes and the words shot straight to her core, stroking her towards a web of desire and hot entanglements.

Once again, Zina internally shook her head vigorously, refusing to be seduced.

When Zina didn’t answer, Daemon pressed on. "Or is this simply because of Freya? You do not even know the woman so why are you in a twist over her."

It was at that point that Zina discovered that she was yet to discover the full extent of her rage, for the way her body shook violently was a foreign thing to her.

"Did you just say ’is this simply because of Freya?’" She gritted, unable to believe her ears. She had thought Daemon to be a man smarter than the world itself, but it would seem as though his emotional unavailability ran far deeper than she had ever envisioned.

Daemon visibly drew back, and for the first time the man looked truly at a loss for words. Next he sighed as if he couldn’t take it anymore.

"Let’s continue this conversation on another day, Theta."

"DON’T CALL ME THETA!" Zina roared in a voice she didn’t recognize herself.

At the end of her scream was a tribute silence as if the world around her had stilled, and what followed next was the sound of glasses shattering and the splinter pieces travelling at top speed towards her.

Before Zina could make sense of the commotion about her, Daemon was hugging her, his body shielding her from the onslaught of glass splinters that speared through his skin, drawing blood.

Zina, whose face was buried in his shirt that smelled of sandalwood and pine, was wide-eyed as what was happening felt like something out of a dream.

When the commotion receded, Daemon disengaged from the hug, his hands roaming around her shoulders as if trying to check if she was hurt.

Zina momentarily forgot about the genesis of her anger as she examined Daemon’s body as blood pooled it to the floor.

A large shard of glass was embedded to the side of his abdomen, and the gash looked to be quite deeper.

All the windows and vases of Daemon’s office were currently lying as splinters on the floor and Zina simply couldn’t reconcile that fact with the fact that somehow, screaming at Daemon had caused all of it.

She raised a shaking hand, pressing it against the biggest gash that was still obstructed by the large piece of glass.

"Are you okay?" She whispered in a trembling voice. Daemon’s blank, impassive expression was back again and whatever emotion he wanted to express before the commotion was nowhere to be found on his face.

One hand gripping her shoulders slipped away from her as he tugged at the large shard of glass while Zina stared in horror at how easily he did it. More blood gushed forth, but they soon stopped as his wounds began to heal quickly like nothing ever happened.

He gripped her even tighter as he squeezed his eyes shut like he was praying to the heavens above for strength.

"You ask too much from me, Zina."

Zina’s face squeezed as she felt tears begin to form in her eyes.

He had called her name, could she truly get through him? Was there hope?

Daemon exhaled harshly as if he was about to do a most difficult thing. "Freya Fergus did mean something to me before, but not anymore. As far as I am concerned she is currently one piece on my Wolf Chess table that you so much despise."

Against her wishes, Zina felt her lips tug into a small smile even as her tears streamed down. "What piece is she? The Aberrant?" She asked through a hoarse throat.

Daemon’s lips tugged into a smirk. "You’re the only aberrant that I know, Zina WolfKnight."

Zina’s small smile bloomed into a big one. It wasn’t even an endearment, and yet she felt like it was one... albeit the twisted kind.

Daemon heaved a sigh. "I am sorry." He finally spat out, his eyes taking on all the storms of the world.

Like a promise of regrets and whatnot.
