The Alpha Prince's Purchased Maid
Chapter 77: No Place for Me

Chapter 77: No Place for Me

I had no idea why Sophie suddenly abandoned me or why the Lady no longer gave me any orders. At my words, all the maids turned towards me with a clear look of disdain. Their cold attitude told me that I wouldn’t get to help them with anything no matter how desperate they were to get an extra pair of hands.

“I...can help you clean...if you want...” I suggested hesitantly.

“No need. Please stay out of our way,” the most senior maid of the group replied.

I stood glued to the spot as she walked right past me with her cleaning equipment before the rest of the maids followed silently after her. This wasn’t the first time that something like this had happened to me, so I wasn’t exactly shocked or surprised. However, that didn’t mean that I understood the sudden change in their attitude toward me.

When the workday was coming to an end, I stood in the garden alone as I stared up to admire the mix of orange and pink in the sky above as the sun began to set. It was a very beautiful and calming sight that helped to cheer me up a little. Suddenly, I felt quite lonely, and it was quite disappointing to admit to myself that after spending quite a while here in the palace, I had not found a place for me to belong.

“Mila...” a stern voice called my name from behind me.

I turned around to see Sophie approaching me. The cold look on her face told me that she wasn’t here to offer any good news or any condolences.

“Hello, Sophie...” I greeted her politely.

“Come with me. The Lady wishes to speak to you,” Sophie stated curtly before turning on her heels and walking away.

I followed after her obediently while I wondered what business the Lady had with me. Sophie led me inside the palace and into the main hall where Lady Regina sat on a sofa with a teacup in her hand as she waited for my arrival.

“My Lady, the maid, Mila, is here...” Sophie announced softly before bowing slightly to show her respect.

I quickly curtsied before I would bring more doom upon myself. Lady Regina took a sip from her teacup before placing it down on the table in front of her. Her calmness only made me more nervous about what she wanted to talk to me about. The last time that she called for me directly like this, I ended up in the middle of a dark forest on a mountain with wolves for company. Naturally, I suspected something of the same nature this time around. The worst thing was that she was my lady and as one of her maids, I had to follow and fulfill her commands to the best of my ability.

“Sophie, please leave us...” Lady Regina spoke up in a sweet voice.

Sophie bowed and quickly left the room without a word. The sound of the door closing at her departure informed me that I was now alone with Lady Regina. It seemed like the atmosphere tensed all around me as I waited for Lady Reginal to speak.

“Do you know why I called for you today?” she asked lightly.

How would I know?

“No, My Lady,” I replied while trying to sound polite.

“I see. Why don’t you take a seat over here close to me? It’ll make it easier for us to talk,” the lady offered with a smile.

“I am fine with standing here, My Lady,” I replied.

“Are you sure? It is way more comfortable over here,” she said with a smile.

I took in a deep breath to calm myself. Maids are not supposed to sit on furniture intended for the lady or her guests.

“Thank you for the kind offer, but as a maid, it would be inappropriate for me to overstep my boundaries,” I replied politely.

“Hmm...is that so?” the lady said as she seemed to ponder my words.

“I am very sorry, My Lady,” I apologized for turning down her offer.

“Let me know if I’m understanding this right. So, to you, taking a seat on this sofa here based on my invitation is overstepping your boundaries as a maid but sleeping in Prince Leonard’s bed isn’t overstepping any of your boundaries?” the lady asked before her eyes narrowed at me.

I didn’t think that Prince Leonard would do something with the intention to get me into trouble; however, I wouldn’t trust the same to apply to the lady here. Of course, I couldn’t tell her that. I bit on the inside of my lower lip slightly when I realized that this was the real intention behind her request to see me. In the end, everyone is just misunderstanding the relationship that I have with the prince, and I couldn’t truly blame them. After all, I did spend the night in the prince’s bedroom and he also...

Before my thoughts would lead me to recall all the things that the prince did to me and everything that he made me feel, I forcefully severed my chain of thought and focused my attention back on the situation at hand. How should I handle this without placing blame on anyone else?

“I am sure that this is all just a misunderstanding, My Lady. The truth is, I was summoned to help nurse the prince because he was sick and that is all,” I replied quite truthfully.

I had no idea how much what he did to me overstepped the boundaries of my helping to nurse him, but in the end, he did seem to completely recover and maybe that meant that I was indeed helping him and that I succeed in what I was originally summoned to do.

“I see. If that is the case, then you are clearly not at fault for just performing your duties. I praise you for your endless dedication to serve...” the lady said with a wide smile.

“...thank you, My Lady,” I thanked her because I didn’t know what else to say.
