Chapter 42: Mating Partners

“Of course. I don’t involve myself in picking and choosing the women that I mate with. I leave it up to the council to decide or the chamber manager to choose. If possible, I also try to avoid spending more than one night with the same woman,” Darius replied emotionlessly.

“You’re pretty amazing...” Leonard said with an appreciative nod of his head.

“If you’re lonely you can go back to dating those superstars from faraway lands, you know...” Darius suggested.

“I’ll keep that in mind...” Leonard mumbled.

“I didn’t want to say this, but you haven’t forgotten why the council and the prime minister moved Regina to live here, right?” Darius asked before he sighed.

He knew well what everyone wanted, and it just seemed like the perfect plan; however, Darius also knew that things wouldn’t go so smoothly as far as Leonard was concerned.

“I’m not interested in fucking her,” Leonard stated without bothering to mince his words.

“That’s what I thought. Who knows? Things might change when the moon is full...” Darius said before he forced a smile.

“And then what? What happens after that when the moon is no longer full?” Leonard asked defiantly.

“You’re too nice sometimes, Leo. This is exactly why I think you’ll make a better king than I ever could be,” Darius said before he smiled understandingly to his younger brother.

Knowing that there wasn’t anything else that he could say to change Leonard’s mind, Darius left the room after exchanging a few parting words with his brother.

The night of the full moon was fast approaching, and it never failed to be a troublesome night. A loud and long sigh escaped from Leonard’s lips as he started to formulate a plan for him to fight the beast inside of him when that night came.

The door closed behind Darius before he quickly made his way down the long and silent hallway. The moonlight that shone mercilessly in through the window served as a harsh reminder that time was rapidly ticking by without waiting for anyone or anything. Precisely because Leonard didn’t want to be crowned as the next king and has not lifted a finger to make a move on producing the Ultimate Alpha pup, Darius had quickly realized that it was up to him to figure something out and the deadline that he gave to himself was this upcoming full moon night.

With how things were progressing, he wouldn’t be surprised if Florian ended up producing an Ultimate Alpha first with his many attempts, trials, and errors with various women. Although the odds were very low for a human woman to successfully conceive and then give birth to an Ultimate Alpha, it wasn’t like it hadn’t happened before. Florian is a breathing and living example to prove that it was indeed possible.

The race against time had really begun.

The day that I dreaded arrived the following day. The change started when Madame Cassandra informed me bright and early in the morning before breakfast that Lady Regina had summoned for me to see her at her palace. I had no idea what she wanted to talk to me about and none of that interested me. The only thing that bothered me and captured my attention was the fact that I wouldn’t be able to go to the stables today.

Perhaps, without realizing it, yesterday was the last day that I would get to work at the stables and also my last day with him.

“You’re finally here. Please take a seat,” Lady Regina said warmly.

I knew that maids were not allowed to sit down in the guest’s seat or any seat in the palaces. Lady Regina should know this as well, so I had no idea why she was being so kind to me. After spending the morning and the early afternoon cleaning the hallways of the palace based on Sophie’s instructions, I was finally summoned to meet Lady Regina.

“Thank you for your kindness, My Lady, but I’d rather stand,” I replied while making sure to keep my tone polite and humble.

“Is that so? I’ve heard good things about you and the work that you’ve done especially at keeping the stables clean,” Lady Regina said before she smiled sweetly at me.

I was glad that she was complimenting me. It seemed like I had done well and hopefully that meant that she had other tasks for me. I did enjoy my time at the stables, and I would love to continue working there; however, there were probably other work that she wanted me to do.

“Thank you for your kind words, My Lady,” I replied before returning her smile.

“I have to say that I didn’t know what you could ride. Care to accompany me the next time that I go riding? Usually, I take Sophie with me, but I wouldn’t mind taking you along as well,” Lady Regina suggested with a beautiful smile.

“That...That would be nice, My Lady...” I murmured in reply.

The way her eyes looked at me made me feel uncomfortable. It was like she was implying that I had done something wrong, and she knew about it. How did she know that I could ride?

The truth was that I didn’t know how to ride up until very recently because that man just taught me. Nothing else would explain her knowledge about this recent development in my skill unless she saw me riding a horse or him teaching me. Maybe she didn’t see it herself, but someone had told her. My eyes shifted to Sophie who was standing at her lady’s side as my brain made the connection.

“To reward you for working so hard for me, I have decided to give you a special opportunity to showcase even more of your skills as a maid. Please keep this to yourself because it is confidential. The truth is, I have been invited to meet the king. It is such an honor to meet His Majesty and I hope that you can understand that there is no way that I can turn up to meet him empty handed...” Lady Regina said before smiling meaningfully at me.

I squeezed my hands tightly together in front of my waist as I tried to maintain my polite composure. The small hair at the back of my neck stood up and a shiver ran through my body. That was more than enough to tell me that there was something fishy about the request that she was about to ask of me.
