Chapter 417: Eternal Vows

I felt like there was no need for any complex ceremony to bind us together when our hearts were already one. I was already more than thankful for the small family of three that I have built with the Prince, and getting married formally didn’t matter much to me.

"You look like you don’t want to marry me," Prince Leonard said, without hiding his disappointment.

"That’s not what I said," I quickly denied, before he would get the wrong idea. It wasn’t like I didn’t want to marry Prince Leonard, the idea of marriage just didn’t seem so significant to me anymore now that I was sure that I had the prince’s love and also baby Logan.

"Now that Logan has grown up somewhat, I feel like it is the right time for us to finally get married. The king, my father, also wants to grant you an official title as my wife and also as Logan’s mother," the prince explained patiently before he flashed me a hopeful smile.

If anything, it was probably his smile that convinced me to go along with whatever he had planned. I wasn’t against the idea of marriage, and if I ever wanted to get married then I wanted to marry Prince Leonard and no one else. In that respect, I couldn’t find a valid excuse to turn down his marriage proposal.

"I will marry you. I just think that this is a little sudden and quite unexpected. Sorry for not giving you my answer right away," I explained to prevent any possibility of a misunderstanding.

"Well, I’m very glad that that is settled. To me, you are already my wife, and on top of that, you are my fated mate. Even so, I still think that there is no harm in formalizing things, plus I’m looking forward to seeing you in a beautiful wedding dress on our wedding day," the prince said with a hint of excitement.

His feelings were quickly rubbing off on me and I felt excitement stir in my chest. “You’re making me feel so excited. I hope everything goes well...” I replied with a small giggle.

Prince Leonard nodded his head with a beautiful smile on his lips, and I wondered what he was seeing in his mind. However, that blissful expression was quite short-lived and soon it was replaced by a slight frown as if something was troubling him.

"Is something the matter?" I inquired once again.

"On top of suggesting that we should get married, my father wants us to inherit the throne and then Logan after us," Prince Leonard confessed with an uncertain look on his face.

"Wow, I’m not sure what to say," I admitted honestly, because I wasn’t sure about my preferences.

Politics isn’t my cup of tea, and I wasn’t so sure about the idea of becoming the next Queen of the country either.

"I think you will make an amazing queen. You are so caring and empathetic. I’m sure that you will make a sweet and gentle queen that cares about her people," the prince said with an approving nod of his head, and I saw him fixate his gaze on my face. It felt like he could hear my unvoiced concerns and was trying to address them in his own way.

"You’re really buttering me up as if you’ve already decided that you want to become the next king," I said with a small laugh.

"If I told you that I want to be the next king, will you support my decision?" the prince asked me directly.

Surprisingly, I didn’t need time to figure out the answer that I wanted to give him. Before I could even think about it, I was already nodding my head and smiling at him.

“Whatever you decide, I will trust and respect your decision, and I will do my absolute best to support you just like you’ve always been there for me,” I made my promise boldly with every intention to deliver on it.

"Can you tell me one thing?" I asked curiously after a moment of pausing.

"What is it? I’ll answer whatever you ask," the prince said as he wrapped his arm around my shoulder and pulled me close.

"Why the sudden change of heart? You’ve been so against becoming the next king all this time," I asked, the question that was plaguing my mind.

"I love you, even though it might sound quite conservative and behind the times, I still think that to acknowledge you properly as my wife we should get married. On top of that, my father is getting old, and we don’t exactly have that many options if we want to continue the reign of the Royal Family," Prince Leonard replied.

Although I could feel his genuine love for me, I still didn’t fully understand his change of heart in becoming the next king. “Is that all there is to it? I’m sorry if my question sounds strange, but you were so against it before,” I asked in wonder.

"To be honest, I’ve always hated the wolf inside of me. Growing up while struggling to control my transformation and the various wolf traits I inherited was a real struggle for me. I hated it so badly to the point where I took it as an existential crisis. I wasn’t sure who the real me was, and it felt like the wolf inside of me was always there and ready to gobble me up if I ever let my guard down," the prince confessed, with a faraway look in his eyes.

I realized that was probably the first time that the prince was confessing to me so directly about how he felt about his wolf genes. ’I’m sorry that I never knew how painful it was for you,’ I replied as it finally dawned on me why he seemed so hesitant about becoming the next king.

"Well, Logan doesn’t seem to be having that issue. At least, not that we know of,” I said in my attempt to brighten the mood.

"That’s right. I feel that Logan feels very in sync with his wolf. In fact, sometimes I feel like he is having a very good time regardless of whatever form he is in,” Prince Leonard said before smiling a little at me.
