Chapter 406: Our New Bond

The pain still felt quite fresh in my mind, and that was probably why I found myself hesitating. "Are you not ready to find out?" the prince asked as if he could read my mind.

"I’m scared," I admitted straightforwardly.

"What are you scared of?" the prince asked, and I could tell this question was serious.

"Disappointment. To be honest, I’m a little scared of becoming pregnant as well because I’ve never gone through it before, so there’s a certain sense of fear of the unknown. But if I could choose, I would rather face the unknown than face another disappointment about this matter," I said before chewing down on my lower lip.

"I’ll be with you no matter what you decide. Also, there’s no need for you to rush yourself," the prince reminded me again as he wrapped an arm around my shoulder.

"Let’s do this. I’ll get the test kit," I told the prince before my resolution would waiver.

Even though I didn’t have memories of my parents, I was sure that it would take a considerable amount of effort and courage to raise a child and to play the role of a mother. If I didn’t even have the courage to take the pregnancy test, then perhaps I didn’t have what it takes to raise a child of my own. With that thought in mind, I headed towards the bathroom.

"Can you maybe hide it away from me for now?" I asked pleadingly after I had completed the pregnancy test. Time seemed to crawl lazily, and the few minutes that were required for the test result to materialize felt like forever. I sat next to the prince on our bed with my head leaned against his shoulder for support.

"I wish that I could have felt excited at that moment, but all I did was brace myself against another wave of disappointment," I said, feeling the weight of uncertainty.

"Are you still feeling nauseous?" Prince Leonard asked me as his large hand stroked my hair.

"Not at all. It feels like I might have just imagined that whole episode considering how fine I feel now," I replied truthfully.

There was a small part of me that wished the symptom could have persisted, so that I would feel that this was more real and that I wasn’t just imagining things. Regardless, the test result would be out soon, and the truth would be revealed.

"Mila," the prince called my name softly to get my attention.

"Yes?" I replied instinctively.

"I want you to remember that no matter what happens and no matter what the result is, we will still be together," the prince reminded me in a voice so gentle that it almost brought tears to my eyes.

"Thank you," I replied with the only words that I could think of.

We sat next to each other in silence as we continued waiting for the results. Just as we had agreed, Prince Leonard was the one who checked on the result instead of me because by that time I was nothing but a useless bundle of nerves.

The prince stood up from the bed before heading to fetch the pregnancy stick. I held my breath as I watched his broad back turn in my direction while the Prince checked the result of the test in silence. Everything seemed to have happened in slow motion from my perspective as the prince slowly turned to face me with the pregnancy stick in his hand. All I could focus on was the look on his face that I failed to understand. I had never seen that expression on him before, and I couldn’t tell exactly what he was feeling.

"How is it?" I asked in a shaky voice that didn’t sound like my own.

"Well, congratulations to us. We’re about to have a child of our own," the prince announced before he broke out in a bright smile.

I was stunned speechless at his announcement, and I had to admit that I found it so hard to believe. My hands instinctively flew to cover my still flat belly as the prince quickly approached me. He captured my hands in his before slowly and carefully pulling me up to my feet. I felt his arms around my body, and then my face was pressed against his hard frame as he hugged me tightly. Even through all of that, I still struggled to wrap my head around what he had just told me.

I’m really pregnant...

"You should rest for tonight. Tomorrow, let’s go to the hospital to have you checked out properly," the prince said as he also tried to remain calm.

I was glad that he still had his wits around him at that crucial moment because I could no longer think straight. Tears ran down my eyes, and soon enough, I felt their warm wetness streaking down my cheeks.

"Why are you crying?" the prince asked softly before he placed a gentle kiss on my cheek.

"I can’t believe it. I’m so happy, I don’t even know what to say," I said between my sobs.

Princess Leonard pulled me into his embrace and held me gently in his arms. It felt so magical to me that there was a new life that was growing inside of me, like a new bond between the prince and myself.

The pure sense of joy and happiness that I experienced did not last long before it became tainted with pressure and worry. We couldn’t keep my pregnancy a secret, and soon enough, everyone else in the palace knew about it. After Selena’s miscarriage, and Regina giving birth to a girl, I became the only hope left for the king and the Royal Family to produce an ultimate Alpha. At first, I had thought that there was immense pressure stemming from the fact that I couldn’t conceive, without realizing that that was just the tip of the iceberg. There was even more pressure and scrutiny now that I was pregnant. The Committees’ intervention felt very invasive and also made me feel like our baby didn’t simply belong to us. Perhaps I struggled too much in accepting the concept that our royal baby also belongs somehow to the country, like some kind of public property.
