The Alpha Prince's Purchased Maid -
Chapter 376: Not Good Enough
Chapter 376: Not Good Enough
At first, I was shocked by the news, but it didn’t take me long to feel completely miserable because of it. A lump formed in my throat, and I suddenly felt very nauseous. More casual words of congratulations and thanks were exchanged by the brothers, and I had to say that the environment was extremely pleasant and friendly. I wished that I could share their joys but instead, I felt even more alienated the more that I heard the words of blessing for the two pregnant women. It felt like I was being left out and left behind. At that moment, I desperately yearned to be pregnant and I sorely regret the fact that I wasn’t.
“You two better take good care of your health for the sake of the baby. Hopefully, there will be even better news soon,” the king said with a pleased smile.
“Thank you, Your Majesty,” Regina and Selena managed to reply right at the same time in complete harmony.
I wanted so badly to speak to Selena to understand what had happened. Although she seemed quite happy and at peace with her situation, I wanted to hear from her about what had happened and to make sure that she was truly fine.
“That’s not something to worry about right now,” Prince Darius said to his father.
“How can I not worry about it? It is great news that these two ladies are pregnant, but that will be completely no use if the child is not an Ultimate Alpha,” the king said quite sternly.
I almost gasped in shock when I was reminded that becoming pregnant was just the beginning. The joyous atmosphere suddenly turned cold and filled with tension at the king’s harsh reminder. It wasn’t good enough just to conceive a child because the child also had to be an Ultimate Alpha. It was clear from the king’s words that a normal child would just be considered useless. I glanced over at Regina who still managed to smile in order to hide her nervousness.
On the other hand, Selena’s face had turned as white as a sheet and her lower lip was visibly quivering. I could tell that the king’s word had shocked her and that she wasn’t prepared for the worst that may come.
“Don’t worry so much, father. I am sure that Regina will have no problem producing an ultimate alpha,” Prince Florian said with complete confidence before he turned to smile at Regina.
I wondered if Regina shared even a fraction of his confidence.
“Only time will tell. Regardless, we will find out soon enough,” the king replied smoothly.
When his cold eyes landed on me, it felt almost as if I could hear his unspoken question.
‘What about you? When are you going to get pregnant?’
Although the king’s lips did not move and he did not say those words to me, I could hear them echoing so loudly in my mind as if he had spoken them out loud. The king stared at me silently before he turned his head away. I lowered my eyes in shame while I thought that it might have been better for him to yell at me to express his anger and disappointment. The sudden look of disapproval that he gave me made me feel like I wasn’t good enough and that I didn’t deserve even a speck of his attention.
Although I knew that it wasn’t truly my fault and I didn’t care much about my own situation, I felt that I had put Prince Leonard in a difficult and disadvantageous position. Compared to being looked down upon as being useless, letting the prince down felt even more painful for me.
“Mila,” I heard the prince call my name and turned to face him.
I found Princess Leonard staring directly at me before he reached out to take my hand. That was when I realized that he had called my name inside of my head. He stroked the back of my hand gently with the pad of his thumb.
“There’s nothing for you to worry about,” the prince whispered reassuringly inside my head.
The way that he was trying so hard to comfort me only worked to bring tears to my eyes as I felt even guiltier than before for letting him down. I was certain that the king had summoned Prince Leonard to drive home the message that he was now the one behind both of his brothers. He was now the only one who had failed to impregnate a woman and there was no child of his on the way. Even though he was family and should learn all the good news as well, I was certain that that wasn’t the main reason why we were summoned. I kept my gaze lowered as I tried my best not to blink in fear that the tears that I was desperately holding in would roll down my cheeks.
...
“Prince Leonard...” I called the prince softly as I tugged on his hand to get his attention.
“What is it?” he asked as he turned to face me.
“You can go on ahead, I want to have a word with Selena,” I told him in a small voice before I forced a smile that even I knew didn’t look natural.
We had just stepped out of the throne room and I felt that if I delayed it any further, I might lose my chance to talk to Selena. After moving out of the sacred chamber, I had always assumed that she was still working as a maid back there even in my absence. However, now that I have learned about her pregnancy, I was certain that she was no longer working there.
“Fine, I’ll do you a little favor and help get Darius out of your way as well,” he replied to me with a playful wink of his eye.
“Thank you so much,” I thank the prince from the bottom of my heart for his understanding.
True to his words, Prince Leonard managed to lead Prince Darius away so that I could be alone with Selena.
“How have you been?” I asked her as I tried to keep my emotions in control.
Selena’s eyes darted randomly all over the place as she struggled to face me.
