Chapter 347: A Wild One

At first, I thought that Roxanna was just ill but the way that the prince was acting in such a troubled way told me that there was something more. The other thing that I was sure about was that the prince cared quite a lot about Roxanna. I pursed my lips together as I tried to control my emotions. It made me feel slightly horrible for feeling jealous given the condition that Roxanna was in. I wasn’t sure if she was or is his lover, but I was certain that she is someone very important and dear to the prince.

“This place isn’t a normal hospital,” the prince said after a moment of silence.

“Not normal?” I murmured questioningly.

“That’s right. This is a laboratory of sorts disguised as a hospital. Well, strictly speaking, it is also a hospital since some patients are treated here and there are many doctors and nurses working here along with many scientists as well,” the prince explained.

“Ok...” I mumbled although I didn’t quite understand what he was trying to tell me or how this was in any way related to Roxanna and the condition that she was in.

“To put it simply, Roxanna’s current condition is the result of a series of failed experiments,” Prince Leonard said in a very detached way.

My entire face suddenly went numb as my hands flew to cover my mouth. I was so shocked that I didn’t know what to do or say. I wanted everything the prince had just told me to be just a joke but the sad look in his sincere blue eyes told me that he was telling me the truth.

“That’s...Why? Who did it? How is this possible? Experimenting on her...a person...that’s just...” I said before I had to pause as my voice cracked with intense emotions.

My words felt like senseless rambling because it was just so difficult for me to piece all my thoughts together. The air in the room suddenly felt so much colder than before.

“I guess it won’t be too inaccurate to say that what happened to her is my fault,” Prince Leonard said before letting out a long sigh and closing his eyes.

The look of remorse and regret that crossed his face tore at my heart. Without knowing exactly what happened, I figured that the prince didn’t have a direct hand in this because I found it hard to believe that he would be involved in something so unethical and so cruel. However, whoever did this must have done it because of the prince.

“Please tell me what happened. I’m sure that it’s not your fault,” I said firmly.

“I want to tell you everything, trust me, but it’s just so complicated that I’m not so sure where to start,” he replied.

“Take your time. We have time so please don’t rush yourself. You can start right from the beginning,” I said as I tried to sound as comforting and understanding as I could.

“Let’s sit down,” the prince suggested.

After taking a seat next to him on the sofa that was tugged away to one side of the room, I realized that it was going to be quite a long story. Whatever it was that he wanted or needed to tell me, I told myself that I would be open-minded and that I would brace myself to take the worst.

“You know, if it’s hard for you to talk about this...” I began saying but the prince held up a hand to stop me from saying anymore.

It was true that I wanted to know the truth about what happened but the forlorn look on the prince’s face made my chest hurt. If it was going to be so difficult on him, then I didn’t mind waiting until he was ready to tell me all about it.

“It’s fine. You should know about this, Mila. I’m not having second thoughts about telling you but it’s just a very long and complicated story so I’m not quite sure where to start,” he said before showing me a reassuring smile.

“I see. There’s no need to rush this,” I told him honestly.

“Let’s start from the start. Roxanna was a little bit of a special case when she arrived at the palace. At that time the situation wasn’t that much different from now. The king and committee members were just as desperate for one of us princes to produce an ultimate alpha as the next heir. On top of the usual daughters from noble families, the committee began experimenting with importing in woman from outside the palace from various locations and...professions...” Prince Leonard explained before coming to a pause.

“I see...” I murmured because that was all that I could say.

I wasn’t really sure what kind of profession the prince was referring to, but I didn’t dare to ask. Prince Leonard looked at me before letting out a sigh and then chuckling softly.

“She’s a prostitute. A lady of the night. An escort...whatever you want to call it,” he said before smiling at me.

“Oh...” I mumbled as I suddenly felt a little awkward.

“At first nothing happened, and Roxanna lived with the other honorable maidens in the Sacred Chambers. Back then, I didn’t even know of her existence,” he said as he seemed to relax a little.

I could tell that it was getting easier for the prince to tell his story now that he had started it. The more he told me about Roxanna, the more curious I became about their relationship.

“How did you meet her?” I asked in a small voice.

“She was smoking in the garden close to my study,” the prince replied with a small laugh.

“She was smoking?” I asked with widened eyes at his unexpected answer.

“Yes. She’s a wild one, trust me. If someone else had caught her in the act, she would have been severely punished for smoking in the garden and during working hours on top of that,” he said with a smile.

“I guess you didn’t punish her...” I murmured.
