The Alpha Prince's Purchased Maid -
Chapter 287: Fierce Competition
Chapter 287: Fierce Competition
“Why do you want the prince to come and see you?” she asked as her face suddenly turned serious.
Why did I want the prince to come see me?
I blinked rapidly in surprise at her question. Although I wasn’t sure what I had expected for her to ask me, I was certain that I didn’t expect her to ask me something like this.
“Umm...because I want to see him?” I replied questioningly.
Why else would I want the prince to come and see me?
“Hmm...that’s not quite what I was asking. So let me try again...” she said after giggling softly.
“I am sorry. I don’t think I quite understand your question,” I replied softly.
“Not at all. Let me try asking you again. Why do you want the prince to come to see you?” she asked with a smile.
It might have been the first time that I found her smile so unnerving, and I wondered what she saw with those twinkling eyes of hers as she stared at me.
“I just...want to see him...” I replied in a small voice.
“Why is that? What makes you want to see him?” she asked further.
“I...I’m sorry but I’m not sure...” I mumbled softly because I wasn’t sure what exactly she was trying to get at.
“Why do you really want to see the prince? What’s the reason? Oh, let me help guide you. For instance, are you scared that you may have fallen out of favor? Do you want to see him because you want to mate with him? After all, that would surely increase your chances of becoming pregnant and becoming the next queen. Perhaps, you’re afraid that he may be mating with other women who are ultimately just your competitors?” she asked while stating various of her guesses and theories.
Her words confused me even more than ever before. My mouth dropped open as I stared at her wordlessly while my mind tried to understand the implications of her words. Although her words were direct, the meaning that they implied made me confused.
“Is that...what I should be thinking about?” I asked after a moment of stunned silence.
“Isn’t that what you’ve been thinking about?” she asked in return with round eyes.
“Well...I don’t think so...not quite...” I replied blankly.
Now it was the duchess’s turn to be stunned by my response. She stared at me with widened eyes for a few seconds before she started laughing quite loudly. It seemed like my time living in the palace had not taught me to understand the sense of humors of the royals and I couldn’t quite understand what she found so funny. Whatever I had just said must have been very amusing to her ears because she ended up laughing quite loudly for a while until there were drops of tears in the corner of her eyes.
“Wow! You’re...simply...fresh and amazing...” she managed to say while still giggling.
“Aha...” I murmured while I waited for her to calm down.
“No, I don’t think that you should be thinking about those things, but you should know that that is what most if not almost every honorable maiden is thinking about. Everyone is fighting for the princes’ favor so that they’ll have the most chance to mate with the princes and that means the higher chance of conceiving one of the princes’ children. Well, it’s not like its that simple...” she said before trailing off with a small shrug of her shoulders.
I wasn’t stupid enough to know that that was how things were supposed to work out. The race for the position of the next queen was very real and I have somehow been thrown into the middle of that competitive race regardless of what I wanted.
“But that isn’t the reason why I want to see the prince...” I murmured in my own defense.
“Don’t you want to be the next queen?” she asked as she cocked her head curiously to the side.
“No, I don’t wish for something like that,” I replied without hesitation.
“Hmm...then let me ask you this. What if, Prince Leonard wants to be the next king, will you help him?” she asked before she smiled at me.
“Yes, of course. I will help him,” I replied immediately.
The answer just came so naturally for me that I didn’t even need to think before giving the duchess my answer. If there was something that Prince Leonard wanted and I could do something to help him, then of course, I would do it.
“Even if that means having a baby for him?” she asked.
Having a...baby for him?
I gasped when I realized the implication of what I had just said. If I wanted to help Prince Leonard become the next king, then I need to have his baby and that baby would have to be male and an ultimate alpha.
“I hope you haven’t forgotten the requirements of putting Prince Leonard or any of the princes on the throne as the next king. So, will you help him by bearing his child?” she asked again.
Her lips curved into a smile that told me that she knew much more than she was revealing and that she was leading me on. Our eyes met before she lowered her eyes to stare at my midsection. Before I could stop myself, my hands moved to cover my still flat belly. I knew well enough that I wasn’t pregnant.
“I...that’s...” I mumbled as I hesitated.
It felt like a large lump of ice had formed in the pit of my stomach and I suddenly felt cold from anxiousness and nervousness as the duchess kept on staring at me. I wanted to see Prince Leonard and spend time with him like we usually do. He had become a part of my life at the palace, and I found myself thinking of him and missing him very badly for the past week that we have been apart. However, I guessed I haven’t thought that far ahead about us having a child together.
