Chapter 281: Dreadful Memories
Chapter 281: Dreadful Memories
“Where are we going?” Florian asked as he turned to face his brother.
Darius kept his eyes on the road as he wondered why Florian had decided to tag along. His eyes narrowed slightly in annoyance, but he did not express his emotions in words.
“The lab...” Darius replied curtly.
“The lab? Is Leo there?” Florian asked as his green eyes widened in surprise.
“He’s not picking up his phone...” Darius said as he continued driving.
“Does that mean that he’s at the lab?” Florian asked curiously.
“No, but my gut tells me that he’s at the lab,” Darius replied without explaining any further.
“I hate that place; it makes my skin crawl just thinking about it. Does Leo still like to go there?” Florian asked with a look of disgust on his face.
“I don’t know whether he likes to go there or not but I know that he secretly goes there from time to time...” Darius replied before letting out a soft sigh.
“I thought you go there most often out of the three of us,” Florian said as he rubbed his chin in thought.
“Only because I have to. If you do your part, then maybe I won’t have to go there so often,” Darius replied before turning to glare slightly at his younger brother.
“No, thank you. I’d rather be known as the irresponsible one rather than having to go frequent that place,” Florian replied immediately before faking an exaggerated shiver.
Darius did not say anything in response to that as he slowly shook his head from side to side to show his disapproval. They arrived at the gate of the palace and the security guards stationed at the check point immediately bowed when they recognized the prince’s car.
“I guess they don’t bother to ask you where you’re going...” Florian mumbled.
“I won’t bother replying even if they did ask,” Darius replied coldly.
The gates promptly opened, and the two princes were soon speeding away from the palace. Florian yawned and stretched lazily in the passenger seat of Darius’s car.
“It’s been a while since we’ve been out together,” Florian pointed out.
“I guess we don’t have many reasons to...” Darius replied without any emotion.
“Maybe I should start inviting both you and Leo out to parties in the city more often,” Florian suggested brightly.
“We’ll just politely decline the offer,” Darius replied without even giving it a thought.
“Why do you have to be like that?” Florian asked teasingly before he chuckled.
Darius did not bother to answer his brother as he focused his effort on driving the car. Fortunately, there weren’t many cars on the road. After taking a sharp turn, Darius found himself on a road that led uphill.
“This path doesn’t bring back any good memories...” Florian muttered softly to himself as he stared out of the car’s window at the trees passing by.
“I didn’t ask you to accompany me here,” Darius reminded his younger brother.
“I figured you might want some company. You should thank me. You know how much I hate coming to this place,” Florian said before flashing his brother a smile.
“You should have gone back to your place...” Darius said without any sympathy in his voice.
Although he did not tell his brother directly, Darius also dreaded coming to the laboratory. However, unlike his brothers, he still made the time to contribute where necessary and required of him. Naturally, no other cars joined him on the journey to the top of the hill where there wasn’t any awaiting destination apart from the large building of the laboratory.
“This place is too pretty for what goes on inside...” Florian said as felt a slight tremor run up his spine.
The drive up the hill did not take long and a part of that was due to Darius’s impatience to get to the top. After parking his car right in front of the large and tall modern building, the two brothers stepped out of the car. Darius watched as his younger brother lifted a hand to cover his eyes before staring up at the building in front of them. Known to the public as one of the laboratories that support research for the country’s arms trade and weapons production, the laboratory does not attract much attention and has always been off-limits to the public.
“Hey...wait for me!” Florian called after his brother.
Without paying Florian any more of his attention, Darius strode toward the entrance of the building. No one was expecting him, but he never had to get anyone’s permission to be allowed inside. The automatic glass doors parted to the side for Darius to enter. Florian quickly hurried after his brother into the large reception area of the building.
“They sure make this place so attractive although it never hosts any real visitors...” Florian couldn’t help but comment as he looked around the reception area.
Pristine white walls with modern decoration and furnishing only added to the state-of-the-art vibe of the place. The laboratory wasn’t opened to the public with the excuse that it houses many trade secrets and isn’t safe. Although that was entirely true, the government and the royal family had other reasons.
“We’re the only visitors that this place receives,” Darius muttered.
“Maybe that’s enough reason for this place to look so fancy,” Florian replied with a grin.
“Enough talking. This way...” Darius said before walking further into the building.
Florian followed after his brother without asking any questions. The truth was that he hadn’t been to the laboratory for so long that he didn’t even remember the way around anymore. The building was large, and the floorplan was unusually complicated with many elevators leading to different sets of floors both above ground and underground.
“Is Leo really here?” Florian asked as he continued following Darius down a hallway.
The completely white and shiny walls on both sides of him started to make him slightly nervous. Darius did not reply and that only made Florian’s curiosity grow.
“Leo better be here after we’ve come all this way...” Florian said as his eyes darted nervously along the white walls as if he feared that they may start closing in on them.
