Chapter 228: Formal Mate

I sensed so many different emotions just from observing the women around me. Hope, excitement, fear, dread, and many other emotions that I couldn’t quite identify painted the expression on the faces of so many beautiful women that were gathered around me.

“For tonight, Carmen Lorenz, congratulations you have been chosen to serve Prince Florian. Please do your very best,” Madame Sand announced.

“Aww...thank you. Thank you everyone...” a gorgeous woman with dark brown hair and very wide eyes said before smiling and blowing kisses to everyone around her.

She raised her arms above her head as if striking a victory pose before lowering it down to wave to everyone. From her reaction, I could guess that she was more than thrilled to have been chosen. Also, it didn’t seem like this was the first time that she had been chosen to spend the night with Prince Florian.

“She won’t be the only one and we all know it...” someone muttered close to me.

I turned around to see who had spoken those words but all I saw were women happily smiling and some of them clapping their hands joyously. No matter how much I looked around, I couldn’t seem to find the women who had spoken those words filled with contempt. The sound of Madame Sand clearing her throat brought my attention back to her.

“Asana, congratulations to you. You have been chosen to serve Prince Darius tonight,” Madame Sand announced.

Unlike Carmen, Asana’s reaction was a lot more modest and even almost non-existent to the point where I could hardly identify who she was at first in the crowd. Asana turned out to be a small and thin woman who looked quite young. The blank expression on her face made me believe that she probably wished that she was somewhere else and couldn’t care less.

“Congratulations, Asana!” a woman standing next to hear grabbed her hands before beaming a smile at her.

“Oh...thanks...” she said before slowly pulling her hands away.

Her reaction, or the lack of it, caught my attention and my mind began wondering what everyone women here in the Secret Chambers felt about serving the three brothers. The initial thought and illusion that I had of everyone women being willing to serve the princes and eager to capture their loving attention was quickly shattered.

“That’s quite unexpected...” a woman spoke up close to me.

I turned to find a blonde and angelic-looking woman smiling sweetly at me. For a moment, I was so captured by her beauty that I couldn’t stop staring. She smiled at me before letting out a soft giggle that snapped me out of my daze. After rapidly blinking my eyes to clear my head, I managed to return her smile.

“Umm...what do you mean by that?” I asked in a low whisper.

“Asana is well known to be very experienced. She’s far from being a virgin so I didn’t think that she could get selected for Prince Darius,” she explained before she started clapping her hand.

I didn’t have to ask what kind of experience she was referring to. My eyes travelled to Asana’s small frame as she folded her arms under her chests. She seemed as disengaged from the reality around her as before. If I had to draw a line to split the crowd into two, she would definitely be on the side that wasn’t eager to serve the princes.

“He didn’t choose her?” I asked the question that quickly came to mind.

“Of course not. Prince Darius never chooses his own mate,” she explained with a small laugh.

“Oh...” I mumbled.

I had no idea what to think about that. Prince Darius’s charming smile crept into my mind for a brief moment before it transformed into a very calculating one.

“Lastly, I will announce the one chosen to serve Prince Leonard for this night of the full moon. You may not know her yet because she is new here. So please give her your warmest welcome. Mila, congratulations, you will be serving Prince Leonard tonight,” Madame Sand announced before pointing her finger my way.

I was too absorbed by the reactions of the other women that it didn’t dawn on me that my name would eventually be called as one of the three women selected. Just like I had been so busy observing the reactions of the other women selected and even the other women standing around me, I wondered if everyone was carefully observing my reactions. That was the thought that ran through my head before I realized that I was just standing there with my mouth hanging open like a lost fool.

“Oh, wow. So, you’re Mila. I’ve only heard of you...” the blond woman next to me said as her eyes focused more on my face.

Along with her eyes, I could feel all eyes in the hall on me and I started wishing that I could appear as unshaken and unaffected as Asana had been. My lower lip trembled along with my hands as I tried to keep myself calm. I laced my fingers together to keep my hand from visibly shaking as I tried my best to smile a little. Not wanting to meet their curious stares or pay any attention to their gossiping words, I ducked my head down a little and stared at the tip of my shoes.

“That is all for the announcement today. Please wish the best of luck to our official representatives for this month,” Madame Sand concluded.

I closed my eyes and let out a sigh while I thought about how I could get away from this crowd as soon as possible. The murmurs around me only got louder and although I didn’t want to hear what they had to say about me, I couldn’t help but pick up words here and there.

None of their words were kind or encouraging...

“Are you nervous?” Jessie asked as she gently combed my hair.

“Umm...maybe...” I replied softly.

“Salena looks more nervous than you are,” Jessie pointed out quite correctly.

“Stop teasing her,” I warned while trying my best not to laugh.
