Chapter 203: Tempting Closeness

“Seriously, you don’t have to do this...” I said while praying that he would change his mind.

“You’re right. I don’t have to do this, but I do want to do this...” he said stubbornly without backing down.

“Well, fine. Can you just...stand over there for now?” I asked while indicating with my finger a spot close to the counter.

Prince Leonard grinned at me before obediently taking a few steps to stand at the spot that I had indicated. Now that I’ve somewhat succeeded in creating some space between us, I felt like I could focus more on the task at hand. I reached for a white apron that had been prepared and slipped it on over my dress. After that, I took out the ingredients that Salena had brought over and began preparing the pot. All the while, I was conscious of the prince’s eyes on me as he followed my every movement.

I thought that I could get used to him watching me but that didn’t turn out to be the case. It took a lot of effort for me to focus on preparing the ingredients while not turning to look in the prince’s direction. Thankfully, Prince Leonard didn’t say anything or do anything else to directly distract me.

“Mila...”

I heard the prince calling my name softly from behind me after a short while.

Too close behind me...

I gasped as I turned around to come face to face with him. My eyes widened in shock and I immediately took a step back to get away from him. The hardness of the counter against my back told me that I didn’t have much room to move backwards.

How did he get so close to me without me realizing it?

“Why do you look so shocked? You’re so jumpy...” he said while laughing lightly.

I looked shocked because I was shocked. My eyes widened as I stared up into his cheerful face. His blue eyes felt clearer than usual, and he seemed to be in a very merry mood. When our eyes met, I was automatically tongue-tied.

“What are you doing right now? I couldn’t really see while standing all the way over there...” he asked as he took a small step forward and peered over my shoulder.

My entire body seemed to freeze in place as my heart began racing so fast in my chest that it felt painful and scary at the same time. The hardness of the marble countertop bit into my backside as the prince cornered me back against it. He was so close that I could feel his thighs against mine and if he were to lean slightly forward...

“Prince...” I managed to murmur as my hand flew reflexively to his chest.

Touching his chest sent electrical currents through my fingertips and then the palm of my hand as I tried to push against him to keep him at a distance. The shock that accompanied us touching made me want to pull my hand away; however, it was all too late when I felt the warmth of his palm covering mine. I gasped as I stared up into his piercing blue eyes. Prince Leonard’s attention was no longer on the food on the counter but on my face as his hand pressed mine firmly against the hard muscle of his chest.

I can feel his heartbeat...and it’s driving mine crazy...

“What’s wrong? You should let me help you out with something or I’m going to get bored...” he complained playfully.

“Y-Yeah. Can you...wash these vegetables...and then put them over there?” I requested as I tried awkwardly to pull my hand away from his grasp.

“Sure, I can do that,” Prince Leonard replied enthusiastically.

I let out a soft sigh when he finally let go of my hand and backed away from me. It felt like I could breathe easy again now that he was no longer so close. I watched as he took the basket of vegetable and began washing it at the sink close by. I quickly turned to focus on cooking because it became very clear to me that the sooner I finished everything, the better it would be. The peace that I got to enjoy while the prince was washing the vegetable as I had instructed did not last long at all.

“Mila...” he called my name again.

I could feel his presence close behind me and then I could feel him peering over my shoulders again to see what I was doing. While trying to ignore how close he was standing behind me, I willed my hands to continue moving.

“What are you doing?” he asked with interest.

“Cooking...” I replied without providing any more details.

I wished that he would back away and give me some space. Does he even know how much his presence is distracting me?

“Is there something else that I can help you with? I’m so free right now...” he said before he chuckled right next to my ear.

I didn’t dare move an inch in fear that my face wound rub against his face as he began whispering into my ear. A shiver ran through my body and the ache and fluttering feeling in my lower abdomen became increasingly hard for me to ignore. I could smell his scent and feel his body heat against my back and we might as well be skin on skin at that moment. My body was reacting so strongly to his presence again and it seemed like that distance that we had tried to maintain between us had all been for naught.

“No...I’m almost done...so please...” I said as I turned around to face him.

It seemed like the only way that I could get him to put some distance between us. My heart clenched painfully in my chest, and it started to feel harder for me to breath. I tried desperately to seek for an excuse to get him away from me.

Why can’t he just sit and wait patiently at the dining table?

“Mila, what’s wrong?” Prince Leonard asked as he bent down to stare right at my face.
