The Alpha Prince's Purchased Maid
Chapter 104: Inconvenient Reward

Chapter 104: Inconvenient Reward

“Please lift your face so that I can see if clearly,” the king instructed in a tone that sounded so soothing that it surprised me.

“Yes, Your Majesty,” I replied politely.

I bit down on the inside of my lower lip to steel my nerves before I lifted my face. Immediately, I could feel the king’s blue eyes on my face as he stared at me intently. His blue eyes stared closely at my face as if he was appraising its worth and I began sweating more profusely than before as my anxiousness turned slightly into fear. I had no idea why the king had summoned me here or why he wanted to meet with me.

“Do you know why you were summoned here today?” the king asked before he smiled at me.

Of course, I had absolutely no idea and I didn’t even dare take a guess. My eyes glanced over at Prince Darius although I knew that he wasn’t really in a position to help answer the king’s question for me.

“No, Your Majesty,” I replied honestly while trying my best to sound polite.

I prayed desperately inside my head that the king did not call me here to punish me and that I haven’t done anything wrong. I didn’t think that I have broken any laws or any rules, but I couldn’t say that I was completely certain and that was because I wasn’t all that knowledgeable about this kingdom’s laws or the palace’s rules.

“I called you here to thank you for helping my son on the night of the full moon. I heard that Leonard was sick and that you were the one who nursed him until he felt better. For that, I truly owe you my thanks,” the king said before smiling at me.

“Oh, no. There’s...there’s no need for you to thank me...I didn’t do anything...” I quickly said while I hated how flustered I sounded.

My hands waved in front of my face as I tried to deny the king’s thanks. After all, I didn’t exactly cure the prince of his illness. Perhaps I did succeed in making his symptoms subside for a while for him to get some sleep for the night, but I surely didn’t cure him of his condition at all. The king must have misunderstood, and I didn’t deserve his thanks at all.

“I understand that you’re trying to be humble, but it isn’t so wise to sell yourself short. When you accomplish something, you need to be sure to take adequate credit for it,” the king advised.

“But I...” I mumbled before I decided to shut my mouth before I ended up offending the king.

I glanced over at Prince Darius again but the blank and emotionless expression that he had on his face made me wonder if he was even paying attention to what was going on. Regardless of whether he was paying attention or not, it was evident that he had completely no intentions of stepping in to help me out.

“As the king, I would like to ensure that your achievement does not go unrewarded. I heard that you name is Mila, is that correct?” the king asked.

“Yes, Your Majesty,” I replied with a slight nod of my head.

I felt his eyes on my face for a moment before his gaze traveled down my body, making my entire body stiffen beneath his appraising gaze. The king stroked the grey beard on his chin as his face turned thoughtful as if he was pondering an important matter. His eyes returned to my face, and he smiled brightly at me. His smile made a sinking feeling form in the pit of my stomach when I realized that he must have reached a conclusion about something.

“Mila, as a way to thank you for your outstanding service in helping my son, I will allow you to request for a reward. Tell me, what is it that you want,” the king asked as leaned a little forward in his seat.

What do I want?

“I...the thing is...there is nothing that I want...” I replied honestly in a soft voice.

“Really? There is nothing that you want?” the king asked with his brows raised.

Well, there were some things that I wanted but it wasn’t like I could simply ask for them from the king. Plus, it was just as I had told him, I didn’t do anything to save or help Prince Leonard and that meant that I didn’t want or deserve any reward from the king.

“I...I don’t think...” I murmured as I struggled to find the words to turn down the king’s offer.

Of all the reasons why I thought the king may have summoned for me, it never crossed my mind that he wanted to reward me for that night that I spent with Prince Leonard in his bedroom.

“If you don’t know what you want as your reward then I guess it is my job to think of a reward for you...” the king said before his lips curved up into a smile that looked so calculating.

If he put it that way, then I wouldn’t know how to turn down his offer. A knot formed in my stomach and something in my gut told me that whatever he was about to offer me would be something quite bothersome.

...

**Around the same time**

“I am so happy that you could make it to dinner today, Prince Leonard,” Regina said before she flashed a sweet smiled at the prince.

The prince took off his coat and handed it to the maid carelessly as his eyes roved around the living room of Regina’s palace without looking at her face. He wouldn’t be here had it not been for the invitation from the prime minister. The prince’s cold blue eyes scanned the premises as he wondered where the prime minister was.

“Is the prime minister late?” he asked bluntly with clear dissatisfaction in his tone.

“Oh, no. He has already arrived. Please follow me this way, dinner should be ready as well...” Reginal quickly replied as she led the way toward the dining room.
