The Alpha: Claiming His Enemy's Daughter -
Chapter 732: NOT ENOUGH TIME TO GRIEVE
Chapter 732: NOT ENOUGH TIME TO GRIEVE
People in the Howling Wolf pack greeted her and was actually happy to see her, but somehow, Iris didn’t feel anything, she felt numb.
She asked herself; wasn’t this what she wanted a year ago? To be recognized and to be welcomed? To have people, who would be happy to see her? Now, she got what she wanted she didn’t feel happy at all.
Those smiling faces didn’t give her comfort. Those words of welcome sounded like a buzzing sound in her ears. She couldn’t bring herself to smile at them or see them right in the eyes. She only wanted to go to her bedroom and curled herself with the baby, while Cane prepared for the funeral. She needed every ounce of strength to go through her own daughter’s funeral.
Iris didn’t want to see them happy, why they were happy when her heart was being shredded into pieces? Why they only welcomed her now when she returned with babies? Would they abandon her again when they learned one of the babies was dead? Would they be disappointed because she gave birth to a girl and her little one was not a shifter? Grace had confirmed this...
Would these people, who cheered for her would treat her and her baby coldly when they learned about all of those?
Iris didn’t know what to think and why she poisoned herself with a lot of negative thoughts and worries, but her mind only kept replying the worst case scenario in her mind. Going back to this pack only heightened her anxiety, where she was not in a stable mental to begin with.
Everything exhausted her and she only wanted to have some peace with her baby and mate.
Yet, the commotion around her upset baby Rora, as she was startled, woken up by the loud noise around her, she pursed her lips and started crying, her small face turned very red when she snuggled closer against Iris’s chest, looking for comfort from her mother.
Hearing the baby cried, finally they calmed down, talking in low voice in excitement, as they craned their neck to be able to get a glimpse of the baby in their luna and alpha’s arms.
"Luna Iris!" Kaz greeted Iris when he saw her entered the pack house, he rushed toward her with Maria beside him. "I am so pleased to see you!" Kaz was excited to see the baby in Iris’s arms.
However, Aliana blocked him and Maria from coming closer to Iris. "Luna needs to take some rest. Don’t bother her."
Kaz looked at Iris and then the baby in her arms, who was crying because of the commotion, he looked apologetic and then stepped back. "I am sorry, luna. I am just very excited to see you again and..."
"Kaz, come with me," Cane said, cutting off whatever thing he was going to say.
Kaz was immediately stiffened when he heard that, he had not yet showed the luna the nursery room and talked to her about forgiving him for his mistake in the past and how they needed to open a new Chapter and get rid of all the negative feelings between them. Let go of the grudge.
Meanwhile, Maria recoiled when she heard her name was being called too, while the alpha handed baby Crystal to Grace and approach Iris when they were already in front of their bedroom.
"I will come to see you soon," he said, kissing her forehead gently.
"Okay." Iris didn’t seem to hear what he said, as she went into their bedroom, trying to get away from this noisiness that made her baby cried.
Aliana came into the room with Iris and baby Rora, while Grace took baby Crystal somewhere. Iris stared at Grace’s back.
"Where Grace will take my baby, Aliana?" Iris asked, she had not yet entered the bedroom, while Cane had taken Kaz and Maria to his study room to discuss about something. "What if my baby needed me?"
Aliana pressed her lips when she heard that. "Grace will take care of her, luna. You don’t need to worry." She then nudged Rora’s cheek. "I think she is hungry, luna."
Iris’s attention finally shifted toward baby Rora and she hugged her tighter when she entered the bedroom. "I am sorry, sweety..." She apologized because she was spacing out earlier.
Aliana arranged the pillows for Iris, so she would be more comfortable when she breastfed the baby.
"Aliana..."
"Yes, luna?"
"I forgot. Have I breastfed the other baby before Grace took her?"
Aliana felt there was lump in her throat and she couldn’t find the answer for that. With a lot of things that was going on and their current situation, there were a lot of emotions that needed to be suppressed and the pressure for being back in this pack, messing with Iris’s mind somehow.
More importantly, Aliana didn’t think neither Cane and Iris had been given enough time to grieve for their baby... they needed some peaceful moment and got some rest. However, the movement from their enemy did not allow them to do so.
"I want you to arrange for funeral."
That was the first thing that Cane said to Kaz and Maria the moment they entered the study room. The two of them had been wondering what the alpha was about to talk to them.
Kaz thought, Cane would question why he was still in the pack house when he had been instructed to leave the place after six months.
However, Cane gave them another task, in which they accepted gladly, thinking the alpha would give them a second chance to stay in the pack house.
Yet, what Cane said next shattered their dream.
"After the funeral, you can leave the pack house, Kaz and Maria, I want you to stay in the orphanage and helped Hanna."
Cane had his own reason why they gave this task to them, because they were familiar of what to do, it would be more efficient this way, since Carla must have not yet learned about how to prepare a funeral and neither Jace and Ethan would have free time to make preparation. Cane had different task for them.
"Alpha, please! Please give us a second chance!" Kaz immediately knelt down, so did Maria.
"Alpha, I have been taking care of the pack house for as long as I can remember, please, alpha...!" Maria shook her head. She liked Hanna enough to work with her in harmony, but it didn’t mean she was willing to leave the pack house. This was her home.
However, Cane didn’t budge. He waved his hand to dismiss them.
"Call Ethan and Jace on your way out." Cane then remembered something. "Tell them to call the merchant also."
Kaz and Maria wanted to retort, but one glance from Cane was enough to shut them up. They rose to their feet and defeatedly walked toward the door.
But then, Cane called them again. "Two funerals. One is family funeral."
"Family funeral?" Kaz repeated the word.
There were two types of funerals in their pack, one was honorable funeral for the fallen warriors and the other was family funeral, usually this funeral happened when there was a member of the alpha’s family that passed away.
"But... who? For whom the family funeral for?" Maria stuttered when she asked. Both the alpha and the luna were fine, their baby looked fine too.
"One of the babies didn’t make it."
That was all the explanation that Cane gave to them, before he told them to close the door and leave. Kaz and Maria were shocked, they were still trying to discern what Cane said when he told the beta and gamma that the alpha wanted to see them, also the merchant too.
It didn’t take long before Jace and Ethan came into the room and were ready to accept their assignment.
"Where is Lou?" Cane asked when Lou was still missing.
However, currently the merchant didn’t have any desire to meet with Cane at all. He was currently on the bed, letting himself to be pampered by Nala.
It had been a while, since the two of them met with each other, but unfortunately, or rather fortunately, Lou was too exhausted to have any form of intimacy with her.
"I am not your personal masseuse!" Nala complained, but she kept massaging Lou’s stiff back.
"Oh, shut up, woman. I am so tired," Lou groaned. He was half naked right now.
"I thought you should be with alpha Cane right now, the guard came to tell you about that earlier, what are you doing here?" Nala frowned.
"If it’s really important, let him come here, instead."
Nala thought about it for a while and decided she didn’t dislike the idea for Cane to be the one, who came here.
"What news?" Lou asked.
"Kian is not here for weeks, you know that, what news I can get?" But, even when Kian was here, Nala didn’t think she would get something out of his mouth. It was so hard to make him speak.
"No. I don’t know. I don’t care where he is. I only wanted to know what news you can get from him after you slept with him a few times."
Nala clenched her jaw when she was being reminded of this.
"All this time, you only brought me unnecessary news that is not important at all."
"I have been trying, okay? But, he is very tight lips."
Lou rolled his eyes. "You should get close with Aliana then, maybe you can get something important."
"You must be delusional to think I can get close to her!"
