Chapter 708: THE BLACK RAIN AND DARK SKY (50)
"Alpha Cane, congratulation about the baby!" alpha Colter congratulated Cane, he patted his shoulder and gave a fatherly speech to him about fatherhood. Koda also did the same thing.
There was this subtle tension Cane could feel from Koda to alpha Colter. He was not sure how Koda would scheme against alpha Colter for his desired to intervene with his plan as the regent, but it didn’t take genius to say Koda wouldn’t let it slide, the information he got from Cane about what alpha Colter and Laluna were trying to do behind his back.
"Congratulation, alpha Cane! I hope this baby will have the royal golden eyes!" Koda congratulated Cane. The enthusiasm that he showed in his voice, didn’t reach his eyes at all. One more royal family, it meant, one more people to be a threat for the throne.
"Ah!" alpha Colter shook his head. "That’s right. What happened with the false claim must be very upsetting. But, I wonder why didn’t you kill that woman and the baby?"
"That’s not necessary," Cane replied coldly. They were trying to say there was a possibility of Iris was having another man’s baby and reminding him about Sofia in the same breath.
"Don’t be too soft. Such crime deserved death punishment." Koda tried to pat his shoulder like what alpha Colter did, but Cane moved away subtly, as if he didn’t see it coming and went away to approach the holy knights instead.
"I am going to talk about logistic with the other knights, I will leave the rest to both of you."
With that, Cane extricated himself from a wasteful conversation. He had received a letter from Iris that informed him about how Laluna had learned about her pregnancy, therefore, he was not surprised when alpha Colter and Koda knew immediately.
He had sent an group of people to be with Iris, now the Aggeverya road had been secured, they could commute safely.
"Cedric!" Cane called the head of the holy knights.
"Alpha Cane." Cedric nodded politely to the alpha. "There is no problem here, our watcher said the enemy is taking the Winter Moon pack’s gates as their stronghold. There are no activities from there."
Cedric told him about a few more things and how they needed to be wise with their food supply. The four ships from Karam had been docked in the Chrystal Moon pack, because they couldn’t go back to their continent, since the sea had frozen faster than they expected.
This fact that Aliana used to make them quiet, as they had to spend four more months in this continent, so they really needed to drop the issue about the death of their merchants and accepted it as an incident during the battle. Aliana also put all the blame on alpha Gallot with the example of how he destroyed the black market.
Alpha Gallot would have coughed blood if he learned about this absurd accusation, since they didn’t even do anything to the merchants, he didn’t even know their existences.
"I don’t think they will try to do anything right now, they must be having difficulty with food supply. Keep watching."
At the beginning, Cedric was not comfortable to work with the shifter, especially when they had to work together in a battle. The strategy that they used were completely different.
More so, there was this stigma in his continent, where they saw the shifters less than human, since they had their beast side. They used to see them like an animal, instead of human.
But to Cedric surprised, Cane let him tried to use his method and as a result... two thousand holy knights were wiped off without mercy. His plan was completely failed.
’We are fighting against my kind, if you don’t try to understand the way my kind’s thinking, you will not be able to survive another battle against them.’
That was what Cane said to him. The alpha saw through him how his people looked down on his kind and underestimated their strength and intelligence, and the price Cedric had to pay was losing two thousand of his people under his command in a single battle less than two hours.
"What about the Serafim? How many people did she manage to heal?"
When the black rain stopped pouring down, there were many people became sick, started with the children and the elderly and now the knights and warriors contracted the same disease.
Even though the number of people, who became sick was not as significant as before when the black rain still poured down, the Serafim was still having a hard time to catch up. Many people died because the Serafim fell sick because she was too exhausted and slowly, the good image the pack member had for the Serafim, crumbled.
Gradually, it became an internal problem within Cane’s alliance.
"She has been resting for the last two days, because she overworked herself." Cedric felt uncomfortable to talk about this and Cane knew this, that’s why he continued the conversation.
One could say he was holding a grudge and he remembered very well, how these knights looked down on his kind.
Cane’s method of showing them how they were not superior was very subtle, Cedric wouldn’t realize it.
"I hope she can get well soon. People has been worried with her absence." Cane had a hunch that Iris could cure the sick people, but seeing how everything took toll on the Serafim, he didn’t even want to give the suggestion.
"I heard your luna has a great healing ability and the baby’s curse managed to be lifted thanked to her. Why don’t we tried to see whether she could help in this matter or not?"
"She is pregnant." Cane revealed this information. Sooner or later, he must learn about this too. "She has been very tired already without giving her another thing to do. There is a new life within her."
Cedric was surprised, but he congratulated Cane and knew the alpha wouldn’t agree with the suggestion, so he dropped the topic.
Two days later, there was a messenger from their enemy, but it set all the warrior from the Howling Wolf pack in an uproar, because this was the first time for them to see Aria. They believed Aria had died, all of them watched her last moment when she was hanged on the gallows.
Yet, she walked across the distance between the two parties by herself, very much alive.
"Alpha! You need to see this!" Pax rushed toward Cane’s tent to inform it right away, where Cane and the other had been discussing their next strategy to attack the last packs in the east and then marched toward the capital city to take the throne.
"How impudent! You need to announce yourself first before you barged in!" Koda snarled at Pax for his interruption.
"What is it?" Cane immediately stood up and approached Pax. If his warrior dropped all the courtesy and looked panic like this, there must be something really important that happened.
"Aria! Aria is here! She is alive!" Pax said, his voice was shaking, his eyes widened in disbelieve upon seeing what he had seen.
"Who is Aria?" alpha Colter watched Cane rushed out of the tent.
"I think that alpha Cane’s mistress, but I thought she had died," Koda replied.
"Died?" Cedric frowned.
The three of them immediately followed Cane out to see what was going on, but the alpha had shifted into his beast and went ahead to the outer perimeter, where he found Aria was standing still in this vast snow with thin dress hugged her body. She was carrying something on both of her hands. Two bundles.
"Cane..." Aria sighed deeply when she finally managed to see Cane. "We finally met again."
The last time they met was when Aria stabbed Cane with dagger. He didn’t expect that and was actually taken aback to see Aria for the first time when he thought she already died.
"I missed you, Cane."
"How can you be still alive?"
Behind Cane, there were Pax and a few other shifters and knights, they were standing far enough, so the conversation between Cane and Aria couldn’t be heard.
"That’s the first thing you wanted to say to me after all this time we have not met with each other?" Aria scrunched her brows, her red eyes stared at Cane with deep hatred and yearning. "Are you still mad because I stabbed you the last time we met?"
Cane said nothing, his eyes directed at the two bundles in Aria’s hands, while she kept talking to him.
"Did you hate me so bad? I admitted that I had done something wrong. I know I was at fault, but how could you kill me? You didn’t even come to see me on that day of the punishment. Cane, can’t you forgive me? You know the reason why I did what had done, my hatred blinded me, only if you threw away that woman and chose me this time, this whole battle didn’t need to happen. I will be by your side, like the old time."
"You didn’t answer my question, Aria. How can you be still alive?"
Aria gritted her teeth. "You didn’t even care about me." The yearning in her red eyes turned into rage, as she threw the two bundles that she had been holding all this time to Cane’s feet. "Last chance, Cane. Come with me."
The bundles rolled on the ground and stopped at Cane’s feet, from inside, two heads rolled over.
It was Arthur and Mal’s head. They were captured and beheaded.
